View Full Version : Stupid: Singing the Name of the Performers in the Song
Jumbo
January-6th-2009, 05:41 PM
There's this stupid **** that's become a popular new convention in pop music. I play a song that may be fine otherwise and the artist or someone doing back-up vocals sings their name and/or the name of a co-performers in the song, pretty much screwing up any positives I felt about the song. Even if it's meant to just be a dance tune and the lyrics are whisper-thin anyway, it's still a retarded ego-silly practice. :)
"shakira, shakira"
"jay-z, jay-z"
"rhianna, T-pain, rhianna, T-pain"
"kanye, ludacris, dolly, englebert, kanye, ludacris, dolly, englebert"
People are morons, they really are. I thought you'd want to know. :)

I've always been highly annoyed by the obligatory Christmas album that every pop star feels they need to release at some point in their careers, mostly because they're running low on money.
STFU please. Thanks.

I was thinking the same thing myself. I've heard this in rap as long as I've been listening.
I remember BIG mentioning his name in plenty of songs. Dr. Dre did it I'm sure. I don't ever remember Tupac doing it. One of the things that let me know who was rapping in a song when I first started listening to rap was what they said their name was during the song. This goes back to the early 90's.

Are we differentiating between the name being pointlessly being sung in the background and the later mentioned version of, say, Biggie? For example, this Biggie verse doesn't bother me the way what Jumbo's talking about does.
Doesn't it seem odd to you
Big come through with mobs and crews

I understand what you are saying, but I think that all of the mindless name spouting originally spun off of rap. I can't point out what songs I would say started this, but it was many years ago and it didn't happen every single song.
Today, they've found something that is good for the radio or the clubs and they run with it.
In the same light, I wouldn't mind it if they used the auto-tune (or whatever that synth is called) only every once in a while. The problem is, I can name more than 10 songs right now that use it extensively. It caught on and now everyone wants it.
Auto Tune:
Arab Money (Busta Rhymes)
Pop Champagne (Ron Browz)
Swagga Like Us (Lil Wayne)
ALL of the Kanye West CD

It's the same ones who scream their own name during sex.
I used to be really annoyed that every single rapper had some song where they talked about how big and tough and cool they were (think Ice Ice Baby) These stupid things usually did good on the radio and were often one hit wonders. What kind of ****ing sense does that make? We don't want to hear rap with substance, but we just can't get enough of some guy spouting clever words about how much better he is than the other MC's?

Auto tune & melodyne are removing talent from music. On the majority of pop albums now, singers voices are auto tuned to death. It is freaking ridiculous. The singers don't even try to sing in pitch because they know there is a software plugin that can go back and fix their ****ty note. I hate that artists are using it as an instrument of effect. It is completely stupid. And hearing Kanye use it on SNL a few weeks back was a disgrace. Why are people like this selling millions of albums? There are far far far better artists to support than this garbage. There is no real art in pop music anymore. It is all copy-pasted, pro tools garbage.
Another thing that I hate now is the loudness war. Why does every freaking album have to be louder than the previous? Perfect example...Death Magnetic. Put that sucker in your car and then pop in something like Kill Em All and I'm willing to bet that you will have to turn the stereo up to be able to rock out to Kill Em All. Plus, while Death Magnetic is a good album, sonically, it sounds like utter garbage. Digital clipping and just pure loud. Gross. Nothing artistic about that at all. /endaudioengineerrant
It sickens me that a band like Porcupine Tree is not selling as many albums as ****ty hip hop, pop and rock artists. They are a top notch band. Their albums are incredibly musical and diverse. Their singer/mastermind is a musical f'n genius. I would even compare them to the Beatles. Real talent is not recognized in popular music today and it is a damn shame that record companies shove **** into peoples ears and try to pass it off as the next best thing. Real music, real talent is unheard of by the majority of folks and unfortunately, the real artists are making it nowhere.
Ugh, I'm bitter ols

I call this the "musicphile" syndrom.
Over the years of my life there are the "musicphiles" who think what they listen to is above the general population.
Then there is the general population.
Some people just want to hear a catchy/pop tune. Some people look at music as an art form and think what they like is misunderstood for a lack of better terms.
Sort of elitist in my opinion.
Everyone likes different music for different reasons. No need to over complicate the why's of that.
Porcupine Tree....meh. There are bands like that that I hear over the decades. They appeal to a small subset...not to the masses. Doesn't make them better or worse than anyone else. It's just music. Enjoy what you like and get over what other peoples fancies are.

I realize everyone enjoys different things and that is completely fine. That is one of the things that makes music so great is that there is so much to choose from and people can pick and choose what they listen to. I guess I don't understand how people can really enjoy something like a Gwen Stefani record more than a Billy Joel album or something.
And if you want to call me an elitist or "musicphile", that is fine. I am a musician, I am pretty well-educated in the subject, of course I am going to be somewhat of an elitist about it. I am glad that I can appreciate music with real depth and meaning. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with a good pop tune that is simple and catchy. Not all music has to be written by a genius for it to be good. Like I said, I just fail to see how some artists are struggling to sell albums when other artists are raking in the cash and managing to have little talent to go with it.

DRM Free. And Apple has to raise the prices because the companies basically forced them to raise prices to offer DRM free music. Don't people want music that is DRM free so they can use it on other devices other than their iPods? Not like there is a pop album with 12 good songs on it anyway...so you are still saving money by purchasing the good ones and leaving off the crappy ones.

I agree that its different strokes for different folks. And I completely respect that not everyone wants to sit and listen to a real song and they would rather listen to a beat they can dance to or listen to a guy recite some crazy rhymes.
