View Full Version : What's the best way to make extra money???
brandymac27

So how do you go about making extra money when you need it?
I want to hear all of your ideas on what you do when you just need a little bit of spending cash, all the way to what you would do if you needed A LOT (at least a couple thousand dollars). I'm not really looking for stuff like babysitting, a second job, etc.
I'm looking for really creative ideas that you may have used in the past that you benefited from financially.
Let's hear it!

Absolutely, but I can't sit, much less stand essentially still for that long. I will never forget when I lived in Gaithersburg, there were always guys standing on the side of 355 in Rockville with signs for Dan's Fan City.
I always wondered how much that really helped sales. I just can't imagine that many people driving down the road and saying "honey, pull over...we need a ceiling fan!"
But apparently it worked, because if it didn't, I don't think they would have been doing it for that long.

Selling plasma at 50bucks a pop.
Getting a part time job as a security guard at the mall (most military folk do that one)
Turn off your cable, shut down the home phone, don't eat out, shop at BJ's
Sell the T.V. and the car and take the bus while working at the 7/11.
Do your taxes: Put 7% church 2% charity, the failed business you had the previous year: Get your license in the courthouse for 10$, then claim the one room and the car and the 144 miles. The depreciation on the 43 wigits of course.
Then pay that one tax group 50$ to protect you if audited = 4200 net.

About fifteen years ago, I knew this homeless guy who actually had a job, but he would blow through his weekly check in just a few days. So when he was broke he'd sit down on the corner of M St and Wis Ave and put his hat in his lap and a sign over his neck that said "I'm hungry. Can you help me?"
He says he made $15 an hour on average.

The Facts of Mystery Shopping
Becoming a legitimate mystery shopper for a legitimate company doesn’t cost anything. Here’s how to do it:
Search the Internet for mystery shopping companies that are accepting applications. Legitimate companies don’t charge an application fee. Many accept applications online.
Do some homework about mystery shopping. Check libraries or bookstores for tips on how to find companies hiring mystery shoppers, as well as how to do the job effectively.
Visit the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA) website at www.mysteryshop.org (http://www.mysteryshop.org/) for information on how to register to be a mystery shopper with a MSPA-member company, a database of available jobs, and additional information on the industry in general.
In the meantime, the FTC says consumers should be skeptical of mystery shopping promoters who:
Advertise for mystery shoppers in a newspaper’s ‘help wanted’ section or by email. While it may appear as if these companies are hiring mystery shoppers, it’s much more likely that they’re pitching unnecessary — and possibly bogus — mystery shopping “services.”
Sell “certification.” Companies that use mystery shoppers generally do not require certification.
Guarantee a job as a mystery shopper.
Charge a fee for access to mystery shopping opportunities.
Sell directories of companies that provide mystery shoppers.

My ex-g/f was a mystery shopper. It was a lot of fun. She'd text me sometime during the day. Tell me to meet her at such and such bar (free drinks) or restaurant, etc. We made a game of it, pretended to be strangers and hook up after our free drinks and leave. Endless entertainment for the patrons.

for some money here and there, buy electronics to resell on craigslist....
what ive done:
last year-went to places like target, walmart, game stop....gotta get there early as soon as the shipments come in(ex: waiting in line at 4am at a circuit city for a Wii then selling off my spot in line for $60 or resell the Wii on craigslist for $60 more than what i bought it for...did that several times)
This year-same thing
last week-went to walmart at 9:30pm, bought a Wii at 12:00am, sold it 2 days later for $30 more
3days ago-went and picked up a wii fit at like 10am at gamestop
resold it the next day and made $25
I mean, it's easy money. basically waiting in line and getting paid for it....

This is what I was going to suggest.
We have two market research companies in the area and my wife is called upon quite frequently to participate in surveys. The pay is pretty good considering the amount of time (not much at all) you invest.
Once a month she gets called in to sample some new Subway sandwich. They have her taste 3 sandwiches and answer questions about each one. For 30 minutes time she gets paid $45.
She did a take home deodarant study where she had to test 2 different brands and answer questions over a two week period. They paid her $160.
She also had a suntan lotion test which was more involved. She had to apply the lotion every morning, then visit the facility in the afternoon for observation. She had to go every weekday for 4 weeks and was paid $1400.

what kind of capital do you have to invest? There are a lot of estate sales here (lots of people passing away). Not sure how much of that goes on up where you're at. People bid on the whole estate of parts.
I get cars about twice a year, usually caddys. A lot of the stuff would sell on ebay for a good profit. You can also go bid on the contents of self storage units that haven't had their rent paid in months.

there similar companies. I can make $50 on average to go take a few photos and submit a form. My dad is a real estate broker a few hours away. He will have me take photos of houses for refinances and such...I make $30-$90 just for a few photos. And no money to get started. For Comply Traq, you do have to fax them some paperwork and attend an hour training session once, over conference call.

Well -If you REALLY wanted to make money -
Surrogate mother - That usually pays between 10k and 15k plus all medical bills. You just need to get pregnant with someone else child.
Donate Eggs - That pays a lot as well, as you don't even have to be pregnant.
Mystery shopping - Crap. Usually they pay for the meal and MAYBE a little extra - but the rules are VERY tight. You have to give detailed information ASAP and you don't get paid or reimbursed for a long time.
Escort - No, I'm not saying Sex or gold digging. There are LEGITMATE escort services out there.
Market research - I have done that. But it's few and far between (Watch pilot TV shows for $50, a hour of Commercials for $100, did a study of new software for $300 and dinner). But the second you say no twice in a row, they seem to stop calling.

From what I've read, an even more profitable enterprise is the dog **** removal business. You just drop by the yard 1 or 2 times a day to pickup/haul away the ****. It apparently pays very well and there is very little competition.

I have a full time job tight now and sometime work really crappy hours. I might not leave the lab until 3 or 4 am and get home and sleep for a couple hours etc. I'm gonna look into this though. Lj provided another link that had some websites also, and I'm gonna look into those as well.

Wear an Arabic shirt on an airplane. 250k
Tell people your with the abu graib literacy foundation..
Slip and fall in the food court of the nicest mall "just don't set it up first: they have camera's"
Now this is the route I was going to go. If you have no standards whatsover, sue over some asinine thing. The trend these days is with arabic/hamas/israeli/terrorist paraphernilia and getting kicked off planes or wherever out while wearing this stuff.
My other suggestion: WORKERS COMP I can't believe no one's mentioned that in this thread. Say you got hurt at work (back is usually the excuse most used) and you can recieve disibility and medical care. I've seen this BS play out far too many times to know that this crap works, it's absolutely absurd. But hey, you have no standards, slip on that nonexistant banana peel!

Why would someone buy them from you and pay 30-60 dollars more, when they can just go to the store like you do and buy them? Are you buying them at a discount or something? Or are you saying there is a limited quantity in the store and you happen to get there early enough to buy it so you can basically resell it for a higher price and people will buy it?

One of my best friends donated eggs. You make more and more each time you do it (I think you can only do it up to three times, though). You DO get a free STD/HIV test and basically a free physical, then they pay you each time they give you the hormone shots, then again when they get the eggs. My friend was able to pay off her car and had a bunch of other money. I wanted to do it, but my boyfriend at the time didn't like the idea of it. Plus, you have to be REALLY careful about getting pregnant, and who wants to go back to condoms after you're used to the real deal? ;)

Well, I get an annual physical and already been tested for HIV/STD's, so the only payoff for me would be the cash. The problem for me is the moral issue behind it. I don't know if I could deal with possibly having a kid somewhere out there that I know nothing about (is it being taken care of, etc). I don't think I could do it.
And the condom thing would suck. Been on birth control for years so, yeah, that would really suck.

People actually sell the gold they win on games on E-Bay? I can't believe that!
Now the Vodka thing might be hitting on something. I could definitely come up with some ideas for that one! Skittle or Nerd flavored might be good. Licorice for those that like it. But, I did always wonder about Prune Vodka, for those that need a little fiber. You think that would appeal to the over 70 crowd?

the stores have a limited amount...they dont even stock these items...
i have to call up the stores, find out when the shipment arrives, and be there in time before the line gets too long.....
everyone i talk to and resell it to, they ususallly buying from me and others on craigslist for 2 reasons:
1.they had called everywhere and nobody had it, so they check craigslist( i acctually sell ti for less than others on craigslist)
2.they are too lazy to go outa their house and wait in line or too lazy to travel to the different stores to look for them..(sometimes lines start at like 4am in freezing weather or 9pm inside the store[like walmart] or there is no line and you just have to get there within 1 or 2 hours of the shipments arrival....otherwise people come and get em right away)
and no, i dont get a discount...buy at retail, sell for more.

Brandy, one of our female members has a pet sitting business and does very well with it. I think it's more like drop by their house 1 or 2 times a day to feed/walk a pet. We have a couple people do that for our cats when we're out of town.
That's a good idea too. Especially since I love pets.
From what I've read, an even more profitable enterprise is the dog **** removal business. You just drop by the yard 1 or 2 times a day to pickup/haul away the ****. It apparently pays very well and there is very little competition.

Funny thing is that I'm a chemist in a Pharma lab. So I guess, to some degree, you could call me some sort of a drug dealer.
And you are wondering how to make extra money?
Psssst. Pill poppers are the MOST loyal buyers on the market and there are a TON of them! You can make $600 on 30 Percocet, $1200+ on 30 Oxycontin and the hits just keep on coming. A chemist is a Pharma lab developed LSD as well as meth, just sayin.
If you have no standards you can get BIG $$$ quick. Just quit selling the crap before you leave a long trail. Make what you need and get out.

While reading this thread, the mystery shopping intrigued me and I looked into it. I saw a posting on CL and decided to reply. They sent me this and before I reply with information, I want to run it by you all to see if it sounds legit or a scam. They aren't asking for any money so I suppose it is legit, but I really have no idea.
Here is the email
We are a company that conduct surveys and evaluate other companies. We hire people to go to other peoples companies and act like customers in order to know how the staffs are handling their services in relation to their customers.Once we have a contract to do,so you would be directed to the company or outlet, and you would be given the funds you need to do the job(either purchase things or require services),after that which you would write a comment on there staffs activities and give a detailed record of your experience.Examples of details you would forward to us are
1)How long it took you to get serve.
2)Smartness of the attendant
3)Customer service professionalism
4)Sometimes you might be required to upset the attendant,to see how they react to clients when they get tensed(under pressure). And we turn the information over to the company executives and they would carry out their own duties in improving there services. Most companies employ our assistance when people give complaints about their services,or when they feel there are needs for them to improve their customer service.Your Identity would be kept confidential as the job states (secret shopper). You would be paid $300 for every survey you carry out,and bonus on your transportation allowance, and funds would be given to you if you have to dine as part of the duty.Your job will be to evaluate and comment on customer service in a wide variety of shops, stores, restaurant and services in your area.No commitment is made on this job, and you would have flexible hours as it suits you.If you are interested,Do send in your:

WVU, looks similar to the Mystery shopper stuff I looked into.
I have been doing surveys and entered into drawings, but out of the 3 companies that have signed up w/, only one is sending me stuff...all online surveys.
The one I did today, I had to watch slides of 3 potential tampon commercials..then answer questions about each one. Then they said that I might be asked to participate in a 14 person panel...lol
I swear, all tampon commercials are friggin stupid.

I did for a little bit a few years back. Don't know how you'd be able to do it while working a full time gig, but all companies are different as far as sheduling is concerned, I would guess.
It's good money, but it is really really tough.
