View Full Version : How fast is 3.0 mbps?

OrangeSkin

We have a new Internet service at school, and I have to decide between 3.0 mbps for free, 10.0 mbps for $79.00 per semester, or 20.0 mbps for $139 per semester.

Is the difference worth the money? I have no idea how fast 3.0 would be. Is that basically as fast as DSL? Or are we talking like 56K? How fast would 10 or 20 be?

Basically I just want to make sure I can download porn or watch youtube videos without a lag.

Thanks for any help.

3.0 is DSL speed. And it really sucks. Remember that the lower download speed also means *usually* lower upload speeds.

I'd go with the 10.0.

79.00 per semester is not bad.

But it's known that you don't usually get the top speeds either way so a 3.0 usually nets about half of that in speed.

You'll do fine with 3MBPS unless you are uploading/downloading large pics/videos/apps. Its about the speed of a cable modem. Also see if it's synchronous or asynchronous.

It depends on what you do on the internet. 3mbps would never be sufficient for some but for others it would be flying.

Honestly it was me I'd pay the 140$ for 20mpbs and you get it for a whole semester.

Yea but you are looking for operating systems to download. So I can see your need. Just surfin the net and doing some email and chat 3MBPS is fine.

Yeah, I guess I'd rather pay $80 for internet than an extra $400 in tuition like I'm seeing.

My opinion? you'll never see a lag on youtube at 3M.

Now, if you're downloading really big files, like high quality video (porn or otherwise), or if you're, say, downloading entire computer operating systems to be burned onto multiple CDs, then you'll notice the difference. You may be talking 15 minutes to download a CD as opposed to 45. (If you're downloading them from a server that's that fast.)

But, how often do you plan to do that?

Or are we talking like 56K?

3Mbps is double the speed of typical DSL and 60 times as fast as 56k.

Honestly? I'd pay for the 20mbps.

How many people are sharing the 3 and 10?

If you download music, stream movies, or do any kind of heavy downloading like torrents, go with the 10meg.. If your just surfing webpages or playing a MMORPG go with the 3 meg.. You won't get fast tham 1 or 2 no matter what site you connect to anyway.

I have DSL,since cable modem here sucks and it is only 1.5 mbps. That is more than enough. 3 should be fine.I'd save the coin personally.

How many people are sharing the 3 and 10?Although anyone who buys 20mbps is going to be raising a giant flag to the campus IT department that he will be downloading pirated movies.

Or 10. Yep, they will report you and then it becomes a legal nightmare. Save the money and go with 3. It will be more than enough.

Or, if you're a Business Major . . .

Buy the 20, put a router on it, and then rent the 20M connection to your roommates.

hmmm......I have AT&T DSL, and I just checked the speed on the tray icon and it says 54.0 Mbps. There must be something wrong here because it is not really blazing fast like I think it should be from reading the comments here about the 10 and 20 Mbps.

I'm sure all of you know about this, but here is a sit to test you download and upload speeds. You can select the nearest location to you or the farthest one to see how the distance affects your speeds.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Mine is 14M down and 2M up. This is with Cox 15M down/3M up service.

And I agree, if you're just surfing the web the 3M connection should be sufficient. If you like gaming or watching movies/porn (or lots of porn at the same time) than go with the 10K connection at least.

14.4kbs FTW!

Sure, it's slower, but it's more personal too. You really get to know each and every 1 and 0 that comes through it.

3.0 is DSL Speed? 10.0MB DSL here. Would take DSL hands down over cable anyday of the week. It's really great when the cable companies flood the coax in the neighboorhood cause they are to cheap to update equipment. 10mb Cable is more like 1.5MB DSL between 4-9pm.

:whoknows:

You're on a wireless network, and your wireless network is capable of 54M.

However, your 54M wireless network is connected to (whatever speed you've got) DSL.

(If you had an Ethernet connection to your DSL modem, it would say you had a 10 or 100Mbps network.)

"You get"? or "They claim"?

See, the asterisk with cable internet is that the speed they advertise is the speed of a link that's shared by everybody in your neighborhood. They say 10, or 20, or 30, or whatever. And you can actually get that speed, too. If not one other person within several blocks of you is using their cable internet right then.

I typically get between 12 and 15 mbps on average. Almost everyone else in my building has satellite TV and DSL internet.:)

I usually can reach 20 easily late at night.

Just tested my Comcast internet It gave me 10MBPS up and 3MBPS down, which is improved since the last time I tried it. Used to be 6 down and 768 up. Thats been over a year ago though. Must have upgraded or having a slow night.
