Sorry If this is the wrong forum, but judging by the lack of Coding in this forum, I figured it's OK :)
As someone who has played hockey since the age of 7, and now coaches a team of 7-8 year olds, has anyone here ever played organized hockey, or ever go out to a rink for a game of shinny?
Just curious because the level of interest I see here from many of you makes me curious is all.
Not a bash in any way, just want to know how many of my fellow comrades actually enjoy playing the sport!
(As a canadian, obviously it is a sport I hold very close to my heart)
BTW, if any of you ever come up to montreal, PLEASE be sure to send me a PM. I can hook you up with FANTASTIC seats for a habs game, the hottest ticket in town.

I was throwing some rocks on Mason Pond after the basketball game today and they all just slid across, not so much as a crack, so that ice might be able to support you now.
I personally wouldn't try it though lol.

no, not here. Already checked the pond at my house and it was only about 3 inches thick and cracked a bit when testing it out. I know someone up in the mountains that plans on hosting some pond hockey.

Haha gotcha. It seemed pretty solid, but then again the rocks weren't that big.

well it is pretty solid. It wasn't breaking up, but cracking a bit underneath. Probably would be able to skate on it, but its cutting it a bit close.

Nope, but wouldn't mind giving it a shot.
Just gotta learn how to ice skate first.

I have played my whole life. As an adult I have been to tournaments in Montreal and Toronto. First time in my life I have been to rinks with 4 sheets of ice. Now thats a hockey town!

played one year, but had to quit because of travel baseball. Wish I would've been able to keep up with it. I don't even have skates anymore. Still play ball hockey anytime I can though.

Not organized. I played roller hockey in college and got into the ice hockey later. Pickup games. Haven't played in a while though, would like to get back into it.

well get on it! Fairfax Ice Arena is probably where you should be playing. I have friends from Chantilly who play at Fairfax Ice with me.

Where was it exactly you were at an arena with 4 rinks? montreal or toronto? If it was montreal, that would be my local rink

Montreal, but I don't remember the name of the rink.

Played roller hockey, but never got a chance to place it on ice, I'd love to try sometime. For the record I loved roller hockey, the physicality of it was great, I tended to cross check quite a bit though lol

Nope...I love watching hockey, but I've tried to ice skate on a few occasions at Fairfax Ice Arena and damn near busted my ass. I shouldn't even call it ice skating, the only way I move is by grabbing the side boards and propelling myself down the ice.

I used to skate now and then. Used to play street hockey. Never played ice hockey though. Used to play football, but wish I had learned to play Hockey. But since I stopped growing at 5'9" that pretty much dashed any hopes of any sports career lol. Especially since I don't got Darrel Green type speed.

I played street hockey when I was younger and only ice skated a few times.

I started when I was 21, love it but I can't afford to play it anymore. Everything especially league fees are so dam expensive. I've been to Toronto for a tourney, it was a blast what I remember of it. haha. I still have all my stuff and play pick up once or twice a year.

I have never played in a league. But, over the last 20+ years, I have played plenty of pick-up street hockey and I have even played a couple of pick-up games of pond hockey. For the poster who mentioned Chantilly, my pond hockey was played on Walney pond and my street hockey was played mostly on the tennis courts in Greenbriar. Being over 40, I find that roller blading is about the only aerobic activity that I will consistently do. I have set up my basement for roller hockey - I even built 2 regulation size goals. It is a great exercise - especially in the winter months. Here is a video I posted of my son after he got some goalie gear for Christmas.

I'm going to try and get into hockey at Fairfax Ice Arena this coming season. I've never played hockey but I think I'm a halfway decent skater.
Money will truly tell if I actually play or not.

alright, I think I'll have funding to start back in next season. I'll be on the Redwings if I play novice, but I may be in a C or B league as the Purple Cobras or maybe Sharks depending on what my brothers/friends/dad are doing. last season we played C together (my brothers, my dad, and some friends) and won the championship.

I've never played hockey but skated when I was younger. I've been looking to start skating recreationally just to get into shape/lose weight, but have a couple questions about skates. Because I don't plan on playing hockey, can I get by with recreational skates? What's the difference between hockey and recreation skates? What is a solid skate that is also cheap? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My first skate in a long time did not go as badly as I expected. I was sucking wind, but didn't have the back problems I used to have it I hadn't skated in a while. The feet hurt, especially after I took off my skates, but nothing like the pain I used to experience.
I'm probalby moving to Houston soon anyways. Hope they have a rink there I can get some playing time in.

It is hard to play in the growing up in the DC area. Our weather doesn't all for much pond hockey if any. Rinks are few and far between. My mom couldn't afford the gear, league fees and crazy game times when I was a kid. I learned to skate and played roller hockey. I'm actually going to start playing again. There is a league in Germantown.

Just make sure you're getting "senior" sizes for an adult foot:
