Good move hiring from within. This guy understands why Coughlin did it. I'm curious to see what he wants to tweak but he is keeping the current defense in place.

Tom, Sheridan said he wouldn't be bringing Osi back because they were able to win without him. :silly:

Very funny. When you have 1st and 5, the best rushing attack in the league and you can't get a first down because you throw the ball three times in a row, BYE BYE!!!!!!

I argued this with many of your fellow fans, especially prior to the beginning of the season. Perhaps it took your last game for them to finally see it. I however don't think many of them will ever be capable of seeing through the blue fog they live in.

GIANTS’ HESITATION CAUSED THEM TO LOSE CAPERS (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/19/giants-hesitation-caused-them-to-lose-capers/)

As Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported on Sunday night, former Pats assistant coach and two-time expansion team head coach Dom Capers has decided to join the Packers (http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/#) as their new defensive coordinator.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Giants, and possibly several other teams, were chasing Capers. Because the Giants hesitated to meet Capers’ salary demands (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3843754), he opted to jump to the Packers instead.
Per Mort, Capers is still owed $2.6 million from the Fins for 2009. He’ll receive a “discounted” salary in his first season with the Packers, since any money he receives there will only reduce the $2.6 million owed to him by Miami.

Next year, Capers will make more than $2 million.
Mortensen reports that the Giants will now consider internal candidates to replace former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the new head coach of the Rams. But it’s still possible that outside candidates will be replaced.

Capers also might have drawn interest from the Ravens, Cowboys, Jets, and possibly the Chiefs.

I am okay with the Giants missing out on Capers. They don't have the personnel to run a 3-4 defense or any form of it.

As far as Gilbride goes, go to www.bigblueinteractive.com and ask the Giants fans there if they are happy with Gilbride. The intelligent Giant fan has never been happy with Gilbride as the OC. The only thing he brings now is stability. But most would not mind a new one at all.

I'm glad the Giants cheaped out on Capers' contract demands. I'd been hoping all along that Sheridan would be named DC if Spags left. According to Giants LB Danny Clark, Spags would occasionally go to Sheridan for advice on which blitzes to run during games.

I think getting rid of Gilbride would bring more stability to the offense than keeping him.

I read that too. It sounds like the guy understands blitzing, which is a big part of this defense. We all knew deep down Sheridan would be the guy. He brings continuity and was supposedly the choice if Spags left last year. Having Tuck, Osi, Robbins, Kiwanuka, Cofield, Pierce, Webster, Phillips, Ross, and Thomas I can see the defense playing just as well next year. Guys like Ross, Thomas, Phillips, Kehl, and Alford should continue to improve and there will be stiff competition for any of the draft picks. I was hoping the chargers would fire Ron Rivera but that probably won't happen. He is the only guy who would of had the necessary 4-3 background and belief in blitzing and being aggressive that this team needs.

Now, if we could only find a way to add Peppers to that list. :D

Well, he'll have much to work with and will likely be successful because of it, and if he's bad, in spite of himself.

The personnel the Giants field, with the return of a healthy Osi should make them the best in the league. Their front seven is scary and with Osi coming back, they can move Kiwi back to LB (if they're so inclined). Also their secondary is almost just as good with the likes of Webster, Ross, an emerging Phillips and Thomas.

I really liked him by midseason but he seemed to wear down late. But the giants entire dline rotation at the end of the season seemed to be lacking. Tollefson is a good 3rd DE though. He looks kind of undersized but most of his moves are straight power, he did a good job on third and longs this year. I expect the giants to draft another DE in the first 4 rounds this year to compete with tollefson, gillberry (IR), and others for the final DE spots (mcdougle and wynn i doubt are comin back). If kiwi stays at DE, Tollefson gets the 4th DE spot and plays specials which is perfect IMO. I really wish the giants could get impact linebackers. Wilkinson and Kehl were both benched this year in favour of much-less athletic and older players and Deossie; who has all the measureables is strictly a very good special teamer. I guess having stud linebackers is kind of greedy, maybe a mammoth DT would be a better wish. If the giants ever drafted a NT like Ngata, Wilfork, Rogers, Jenkins,Ratliff, etc... the flexibility it would add to the defense would be insane. A solid rotation at DT and DE as well as the ability to occasionally use hybrid looks would be a dream come true for me.

Wilkinson was benched? I thought he was battling injury?

You know, the ironic thing in this is if you guys went hard after Capers and started running a 3-4, you could have had a solid shot at Peppers since he's gone on record that he wants to play on a team that runs a 3-4. ;)

Yeah, i guess most teams would want that. This is gonna sound stupid but I really believe if some team had traded for both jenkins and rogers in the offseason (both were traded), whatever team they went to would dominate the LOS and have insane flexibility as far as the scheme. Those guys just needed a change of scenery. Both can play 3-4 NT or 4-3 DT/NT and can't be blocked one on one even in most passing downs. Jenkins makes the Jets defense and Rogers was unstoppable when the giants played the browns, the guy just owned ohara, snee, and seubert. It might be a waste of draft picks but those two guys are relatively young for the position and bully pretty much any interior lineman.

As for Wilkinson.
There was a while where he wasn't listed on the injury report and practiced but didn't start or see the field on defense (if at all). The guy is fast as hell, but oft-injured. There is some other issue that has slowed his development imo. He either is dumb, a misfit for the scheme, or lazy. I can't figure it out. Him and Kehl were splitting time, then it seemed like Kehl took over. Then Kehl got benched for blackburn. I love blackburn, but the guy is like Pierce: he is an average athlete that plays smart and doesn't make wrong steps. The giants need some more speed at linebacker. Letting Kawika mitchell go (especially for such a cheap deal) was a poor decision, imo. Him, Clark, and Pierce starting backed up by kehl, wilkinson, and blackburn would of been a much better core.

Jenkins and Rogers proved very disruptive again this year. Jenkins was a monster.

Per the bio's on Wilkinson he is actually very smart but may lack instinct. This is similar to Bobby Carpenter who was drafted two rounds ahead of him. On a good note for the Giants, although Wilkinson has caught the injury bug including missing an extensive portion of this season, he still has more career tackles than the first round healthy stud Carpenter.
