LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A man apparently despondent about losing his job killed his wife and five children before turning the gun on himself, officials said Tuesday.
The bodies of five children and two adults -- the children's mother and father -- were found Tuesday in a home in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Wilmington. Among the dead, authorities said, were an 8-year-old girl and two sets of twins -- 5-year-old girls and 2-year-old boys.
Ervin Lupoe apparently called 911 and contacted a television station by fax before committing suicide, authorities said.

I just cant imagine how someone kills a kid let alone 5 of them. I mean you have to stop at some point and know you are doing that.

In Lupoe's suicide note, he offered a detailed account of his and his wife's work circumstances, calling the family's situation a "tragic story." He ended it by saying, "So after a horrendous ordeal my wife felt it better to end our lives and why leave our children in someone's else's hands."

Yeah I saw this on the news. Man, no matter how bad my situation gets I could never take the lives of my children.
I know people can be driven to do things that are unspeakable..but wow. Very very sad.

To be fair, We shouldn't cast judgement on the wife considering those are his words and not hers. But yeah, he's a piece of s**t.

Why kill the kids? I just don't understand why he did this?

Instead of phrasing it as if losing his job caused this guy to kill himself, the news report should have looked in to the reality that this guy's ****ed-up mental state probably helped lead to him getting fired. NOBODY kills their entire family--and calls the news about it beforehand--simply because they were fired. That's the sign of a delusional and unhealthy mind.

When I heard about this on Morning Joe, I was like wtf he take the kids. It's one thing if you want to end it for yourself, but leave the kids out of this

Lupoe claimed the couple was being investigated for "misrepresentation of our employment to an outside agency for the benefit to ourselves's [sic], childcare." He said the initial interview was held on December 19, and when he reported for work on December 23, "I was told by my administrator ... that 'You should not even have bothered to come to work today. You should have blown your brains out.'"
Lupoe wrote in the fax, "after a horrendous ordeal my wife felt it better to end our lives and why leave our children in someone else's hands ... we have no job and 5 children under 8 years with no place to go. So here we are."

5 kids under 8 years of age...AND she worked? And supposedly they both felt that murdering their children would be better than leaving their children "in someone else's hands"?...Who's "hands" did she leave the kids in while she was working?

you gotta figure that someone who wants to kill himself isnt in the right mind state anyways. it is NO excuse but maybe a logical reason.
and there were 2 sets of twins.

Here's my take:
If death is nothingness and God doesn't exist, then why suffer needlessly? If you expect your life to start sucking, then suicide is the logical choice.
But if God does exists, which I believe he does, then the rich ought to help the poor. The strong ought to help the weak. This family should have been able to rely on society to help them through a tough time. Although this is a tragic story and I'm saddened by it, I think it will serve as lesson, perhaps not now but maybe down the road, as more people turn to this logic, that the rich and the strong ought to make sacrifices for the weak and the poor. Tax the millionaires 70%. If death is nothingness then it doesn't matter whether you're poor or rich because in the long run no one can escape death, meaning we'll all be in a state of nothingness without consciousness and so nothing in life even matters. Or the rich can earn their salvation and recompense in their future state through charity. Without charity, there is no salvation. It's in this sense that Joe Biden's words that paying taxes is patriotic very much mirrors the truth. Paying taxes and helping those lift those lower than you, making self-sacrifices and depriving yourself for the good of others is the only way to prevent this down the road. Otherwise, if we continue to become increasingly Godless, then suicide becomes increasingly rational to bypass needless suffering. Or if we wake up and see that suicide can't be the fate of mankind, then the rich will start to care about the punishment for selfishness that awaits them and begin to help those in an inferior social position to themselves. Greed and selfishness needs to go. End rant.

There already are mechanisms in place to help families in financial troubles. It's just up to the individuals to do the proper investigation and leg work to know what's available to them and how to access it. Hell, there are an infinite number of churches that would have GLADLY offered whatever help they could, both financially and in terms of bare necessities (food, clothing, childcare, etc.).

Wrong. If death is nothingness that would probably encourage us to utilize whatever means we have to enjoy our lives now to their fullest since there's nothing waiting for us after we die. And one of the ways in which we do that is by having as much money as we can. In other words, if "death is nothingness" shouldn't that mean I should take my money and travel the world so that I can enjoy this place to it's fullest while I'm part of it? Shouldn't I keep as much money for myself, and use it ON myself, if there's nothing to benefit me after I'm gone? Why worry about retirement funds or even paying bills on time? To paraphrase one comedian, nobody ever says on their death bed "Damn...I wish I had paid that cable bill."
It would seem that an eternity spent in benevolent peace provided by a "higher power" or "higher truth" would end up promoting looking past the "now" and the reality of how meaningless the material things in this life really are...and that reality would help me part with my money now.

Let's not over analyze this. This man had a latent mental illness. The chain of events in his life pushed his crazy button and the family suffered because of it. It's a sad story. It's not indicative of the economy or job loss. On a side note, it's a long shot but if anyone can prove the admin told him he should have blown his brains out then that person is in for a world of hurt and guilt.

What I'm saying is if death is nothingness- and you forsee suffering awaiting you, which you believe to be without purpose as you believe God doesn't exist, then what necessarily follows is that you ought to kill yourself.
If you do have funds to travel all over the world and pursue all your hedonistic pleasures, then again if death is nothingness, the logical choice is to maximize your pleasure that your resources permit you to experience, and once you expect a great deal of suffering to follow, suffering that you feel to be without purpose and something that you'd like to avoid, then you ought to kill yourself.
"eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die"
If there's no longer any eat or drink, then might as well go one with it and embrace your destiny of nothingness rather than prolong your fate by living a life of suffering, one which you'd much prefer to just go on and avoid outright.

All I'm saying is that IF this man and his wife were atheists (which they probably were), and they forsaw unavoidable suffering which they didn't desire to endure, then their actions were completely logical. Suicide is the path atheism necessarily brings people who are suffering-averse to follow.
