It's finally here! At 8 p.m. tonight on FOX, the NASCAR Nextel Cup offseason officially comes to an end; and Carl Edwards' first championship season officially begins!

I kid. Kind of. There's no question that the 48 is the team to beat again this year. Chad and Jimmie don't even need their damn radios. They're in each other's heads. But there's just no way...no stinking way...that they can win four in a row, is there? Surely they're the best team in the sport, but even the best need some luck, and there's has to be about exhausted.

So who do you guys like in 2009? The old guard? A changing of the guard? What do you think about the shootout? I know it's non-points, but who cares! It's NASCAR! And it's baaaaaaaaaaaaccccccckkkkkk!!!!!!!!

:point2sky

I suspect that it will be more of the old guard. HMS will dominate this season like they did in 07.

I suspect a big push for that 88 to do good this year.

I'm not saying I disagree, but based on what?

the fact that he has a full year under his belt with HMS. the fact that he has the stigma of not winning out of the way. he made the chase and he is on a GREAT team.

Now Im not saying he is going to win it all this year (which he is) but he will be making a lot more noise then he did last year.

and I also think that Kylie won't be nearly as strong as he was last year. Betty will be, but not Paris.

That makes perfect sense. And like we talked about before, I think having Mark in the building will do a lot of good for him too; on the track and off.

Johnson and Edwards hit hot spots too. Edwards' was timed OK, Johnson's was timed perfectly.

I don't know if Busch's drop off had to do with the pressure, the tracks in the chase, or something else, but I don't see him going away.

I'll be really interested to see what Labonte does with Roush/Yates engines. It seemed like the last two years he got bad break after bad break. I think if he's in good equipment that holds up, and has some luck, he can still be a factor.

I say Stewart is in. He is starting a new team. And there's sure to be struggles. But keep in mind, he's using Hendrick horsepower, and chassis, too, I think. Logano? Definitely out. It will take him at least a year to get fully acclimated with the COT. I think he finishes the year around 20th. Ragan? I think Ragan will get in. I also think he will win a couple of races this year. Labonte? I think his career is about to turn back around. He will have a Roush-Yates motors. I could see him finishing about 15th in points, just missing out on the Chase.

Stewart and Labonte are in. I think Labonte will rebound big time now since he has Roush-Yates power and Roush Chassis and technical support.

As for Jr., unfortunately he is going to continue to flounder until Eury is gone. For some reason they want to act like cousins instead of Crew Chief-Driver at the most important parts of the race or the season.

Additionally, if Robby Gordon should LOSE at any point this year (Psh. I know, right?) his co-pilot named "Clyde" will be entitled to one free "right turn" signal directed toward the driver of his choice, without penalty.

Teller
February-7th-2009, 05:03 PM
Finally, at all tracks, Robby Gordon will have inflatable bumpers on either side of his driving line. This will prevent unauthorized entry into, or exit from, Robby's designated line. At such point during the season as Robby becomes a better driver than my 2-year old is a duckpin bowler, the bumpers shall be removed.

(Them bumpers ain't comin' down. My girl rolled a daddy-aided 86 two weeks ago.) :)

ARCA race had a ton of wrecks - some of them were wicked.

Alli Owens looks to be the real deal. She ran in the top five for a good part of the race and in second for quite a while. Then some buffoon took her out. But she is going to be good.

Nice to see the old man still has a little left in the tank. :)

http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/02/07/belliott.daytona.practice.leader/index.html

In the mid-1980s Bill Elliott handled everyone on NASCAR's superspeedways while these days, beating the other go-or-go-home cars is the only concern for Elliott and his Wood Brothers Racing team.

But on Saturday as practice for the 51st Daytona 500 opened at Daytona International Speedway, Elliott recalled memories of days of yore when he posted the fastest practice speed of 57 entries, in fact, leading both sessions.

Man I'm trying to get into NASCAR again, but to me its just lost something. It can't seem to hold my interest anymore. I grew up a fan in the era of Pearson, Baker, Cale, Waltrip, Earnhardt, the Alabama gang. These guys were characters. Just fun to watch, you never knew what was gonna happen.

I know BB knows some of the guys racing now and my guess is those personalities are still there, NASCAR just quashes them. The corporate stuff is just killing it for me I think.

Anything can happen, all I know for sure is that it won't be James Hylton.

http://www.jayski.com/cupnews.htm#news60
No practice for Hylton means no Daytona 500 attempt: The hauler of #60-James Hylton was leaving Daytona International Speedway on Saturday as Hylton never got out on the track to practice. The Carter Simo Racing driver won’t attempt to qualify for the Daytona 500 on Sunday because he never was able to get a complete lap in practice, and NASCAR typically requires a driver to complete a lap at a reasonable speed to qualify the car. The team had been working on the car for the 74-year-old driver throughout the weekend but apparently never got it to race specifications. So there will be 56 drivers attempting to qualify for the Daytona 500.
AND: The final pre-qualifying practice for the Daytona 500 has ended. The #60 Dodge of James Hylton continued to be plagued with battery and carburetor issues. Per Nascar rules, car's must run a practice lap above an average of 175mph in order to attempt to qualify on Sunday. Despite a valiant effort from the crew, who pushed the car up and down pit lane several times attempting to get it to fire, the car would not start. "We just got snakebite today.", said James Hylton.

Truex and Martin on the pole. As for the COT for some reason it works really well on the plate tracks. The last few laps of last night's race you will probably see in the last laps of the 500. I was not a fan of the plate races but now with the COT they are probably the most exciting races of the season. I just wish they could translate it to the other tracks.

I think it will improve this year, or maybe I just hope it will. For a lot of the tracks, it'll be the teams' third time running them, which should make a big difference. And hell, the good ol' boys couldn't drive the twisted sister on a road course. :OLS:

Congrats to Truex on the big run. And I'll tell you what, if Mark can finally win this damn race...man....I don't know what I'll do.

Big time.

I really like 'Dinger. I expected him to make a big leap up this year. He's not fulltime though now is he?

I don't think so, no. But I think they are working on getting him full sponsorship for the year. I could be wrong on this, though. But I think he ends up running the full schedule. Guy has amazed me at how far he's came. And he's a likeable guy.

I agree with this. Another reason I like the car is because they are so tough. Biffle was in at least 3 accidents last night. With the old car I don't think he makes it as far he did last night. VERY tough cars, those COTs.

I was pissed about Martin announcing he was going to ret a few years ago, and everybody doing all of the stuff for him, and then he did not ret. I used to be glad that he did not win cause that kinda came off to me as a "look at me" type move.

But then i understood how much he likes to race and how hard it is to give that up when you are wtill running up front. This year i hope he can win it all.

Mark's caused me more grief than anyone in NASCAR history. I watched the guy finish second in points every other year for 20 years. I bought ALL of the Salute to You crap. I bought one of his tires from Charlotte in what was his "final" season.

I looked at this young kid, Carl Edwards, coming up and thought "OK, cool. So when Mark's gone next year, I can keep it in the house and root for this kid."

So Mark sticks around.

OMGZ! Dilemma!!!!! Drama in the house!!!!

Then Mark goes of and gets into -- for the love of God -- a bowtie.

Decision finalized! Drama over!

Carl's tearin' it up, life is good. Then suddenly, Mark has a shot at winning the 500.

Return of Drama!!!!!

I'm pacing, biting my nails, praying, damn near can't even watch the end of the race. Come on caution! Come on caution! **** no caution!!!!

And thus, Mark broke my heart one last time.

Or so I thought.

Then the little ****er turns around and signs with Hendrick. Thanks Mark, 20 years of fandom all for you to stick an ice pick in my eye! Awesome! Thanks!

Well now, as you guys know, I'm a baby-**** green bleedin' Carl Edwards fan. In fact, if you slice my right wrist, you get burgundy and gold blood. Cut the left one and it's baby-**** green and pastel blue. (When I get hurt, I always try to hurt my RIGHT arm, for obvious reasons.)

But I'll tell you what, if Mark wins the 500, like I've already said, 20+ years of emotion will be coming out of me. And if he wins it all....I'll be using some sick days; and lots of tissues.

Holy mother of God I'm tired. :yawnee::thud:

I'm a long time Bill Elliott fan. It's been exciting the last two days seeing him have a car that can be up front in speeds down there.

I'm also hoping Mark runs well. I hope he can get a championship before he really does retire.

I guess the next logical thing would be to announce my allegiance........

I actually pull for 2 drivers for two very different reasons and ironically both reasons are now no longer valid.

1. Dale Jr. - He was the driver I would root for when I knew absolutely nothing about Nascar solely for the reason that my brother is a Gordon fan (and a cowpukes fan).

2. Tony Stewart - I root(ed) for Tony because he drove for JGR.

Now that the shock of Jr. driving for the enemy is wearing off I'm finding myself wanting him to win again, though I used to love Tony's attitude and hope he gets some of it back.....

It's cool to like both of them, I'm the same way, have two buddies that are the same and have met other people that like those two.

I liked Tony as soon as he got to cup. He could drive anything on four wheels and had an attitude to go with it. Jr was still in Busch and I was following him and got to see his first win at TMS. When he made the move up to Cup, I kept rooting for him.

For years they've worked well together on the track as "unofficial" teammates. When Jr said he was looking for a new team a couple years ago, I was hoping he would've gone to JGR, but Gibbs was going to Toyota so he wouldn't go there. This year, with Tony being an owner/driver running Hendrick power, this is about as close as those two can be to being official teammates.

So, it's cool to like both drivers. I don't even consider one to be my #1 driver and the other my #2 driver. I consider them to be my #1 and #1A drivers.

My boy's on the pole! Truex needs to respond to a down year in 2008. Not 100% happy about the merger with Ginassi. EGR powered by ECR. What's next, chassis' by Hendrick? EGR powered by ECR on EHR frames.....

I've been a fan since Geoff Bodine won the Daytona 500 in 1986, but NASCAR is on the verge of alienating me as a fan, something I've voiced for over a year now. I've decided that I'll come back to see how Smoke does with his new team, because I REALLY like him as a driver and I want to see him do very well.

With that said, I still have a laundry list of things that I wish NASCAR would change...the first of which is the IROC style of racing that we have right now. Yes, I know it makes it easier for smaller teams to compete, but the manufacturers have been completely eliminated from racing, and when I say manufacturers I mean the companies who's nameplates are on the stickers. Instead now Ford, Chevy, Dodge and Toyota have been replaced with Hendrick, Yates, and Gibbs as such the final detachment with the tradition of "race it on Sunday drive it on Monday" has been broken, granted it has been whittled away at for years but its completely gone now. As such I find it kind of funny when someone says "I can't stand that so-and-so is now driving a ____________ (chevy, ford, dodge, toyota)" when they aren't at all, but instead they are driving a Hendrick, Yates or a Gibbs.

HAHA Wreck em robby is getting a bumper car this year??

(Them bumpers ain't comin' down. My girl rolled a daddy-aided 86 two weeks ago.) :)

I'm happy that Mark Martin made the front row. And if he wins it I'm going to be jumping up and down and might even cry a bit. It's just too bad that he's racing for the evil empire now. I wonder if he gave up his Ford dealership.
