looks like Laich was fine after all. Not sure what the goalie situation is, though. I thought Johnny was gonna have hip surgery or something. I also thought we were told Neuvirth was gonna get a chance to play a game.

So are you saying Johnson is still out but they sent Neuvirth down to bring up another goalie? I wouldn't have been surprised to see Varlamov up here but he hasn't played a game in about 4 weeks. though supposedly his injury wasn't too serious. maybe it has something to do with the rumor I heard about them having him run wind-sprints to work up his stamina for the NHL.
come to think of it, that could make a bit of sense. Neuvirth was playing down in the ECHL because there wasn't much room for him in the AHL to actually get games. So if they pulled Varlamov out of playing games to work solely on his stamina through wind-sprints and what-not, they open a spot for Neuvirth to play up in a league more on par with his abilities and further develop him.

Found a article on it, Johnson is out 6-8 weeks
The Washington Capitals' depth at goaltender is about to be put to the test. One day after losing Brent Johnson -- Jose Theodore's backup -- for six to eight weeks because of surgery to repair a labral tear in his hip, General Manager George McPhee said he has no immediate plans to pursue a veteran replacement.

I can't think of any other situation. They have to be calling up Varlamov with the intention of giving him playing time. Johnny's out, Neuvirth's reassigned, can't see them sending Neuvirth down to bring up Meschesney. Has to be Varlamov.
And under the assumption its Varlamov, why has he not played a game since January 14th? There is no way he's coming off an injury that put him out of commission for 4 weeks just to put him right into the NHL in favor of a healthy backup.

Neuvirth was only sent down because he hasn't played in over a week. He'll get a game or two in Hershey, and be back up by Wednesday. He's expected to start next weekend against Florida (I believe).
Varlamov is still not practicing, so it'll be at least a couple weeks before he's called up.

ah, well that seems like a viable explanation too. much simpler than my little conspiracy.

Why didn't we keep that kid, the 20 year old that played two games with us (goalie).
We should have gotten rid of Theodore or Johnson for him, I think his name was like Valdarmont or something.

Varlamov, he's the one I was talking about. he's been hurt and hasn't played a game since January 14th

Capitals Recall Michal Neuvirth from Hershey
Feb 9, 2009, 9:42 AM EST
Neuvirth
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled goaltender Michal Neuvirth (NOY-vihrt) from the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Hershey Bears, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Neuvirth, 20, is a first-year pro who stands 6’1”, 199 pounds and has backed up Washington goaltender Jose Theodore for the past three games. Neuvirth has split playing time between Hershey and the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL this year. He is 4-3-2 with the Bears this season and stopped 25 of 28 shots yesterday in a 3-2 loss to Portland.
He was 6-7-0-0 in 13 games in the ECHL and recorded a 2.28 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. He played in the ECHL All-Star Game on Jan. 21 and stopped 19 of 20 shots he faced in 20 minutes of action.
The Usi Labem, Czech Republic, native was the Capitals’ second-round choice, 34th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He played a combined 33 games for three teams in the Ontario Hockey League last year and was a combined 17-7-5-3. Neuvirth represented the Czech Republic in the 2008 World Junior Championship and posted a 2-2-0 record. His .910 save percentage ranked fourth in the tournament and he was fifth with a 2.50 goals-against average.
Looks like they did just want to get a game in before the next Caps game.

Oh wow, I didn't even know that, guess it's better he's gone then.

No man, wrong idea. He's supposed to be our future STUD goaltender. He's not gone, he's just injured and with our minor-league affiliate. Hopefully he breaks through the injury bug, and proves to be more durable. He's a quality goaltender, and has shown that he's probably already an NHL-caliber goalie with his limited action thus far this year.
