I started this thread earlier in the year just to post new gear or newly wanted gear. I'd like to see this become a place for Musicians to talk about all things music like
What new gear are you in to
What are some new things you have tried
Any Gig info
New band info
you know anything that pertains to the only passion that equals our love of the skins....Music...
Hope this turns into a great thread!
Behold my new Pearl SRX Custom Drums http://www.pearldrummersforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=268102&stc=1

This pic is the exact set of mine but are not mine the only difference is I have a Pearl plate on the kick drum instead of the hardware on the kick drum, my first tom in not hanging it is on a snare stand which i like better and my heads are white remo emperor heads. Also i have a different cymbal set up. Ill post pics of my set as soon as i can get some taken and uploaded, I put these pics on bc this kit is the same as mine exactly.
The specs are Kick drum 22'' Snare 14'' 1st tom 12'' 2nd tom 14'' All maple shells this thing sounds AMAZING best tone I have played and I have played a lot of different kits over the years. Very clean very nice.
In the spirit of new instruments anyone got anything new lately or even better have your eye on anything new?

I have one but more or less i tune it to ear then make the ensions as even as i can and still get the tone I like...In any case this kit is unbelievable...the clean deep tones are just so nice that it makes the kit that much more fun to play!

I just got these last month. Ibanez Gax70, and it is an awesome guitar. Great action on the neck, and no problems staying in tune. The amp is killer. Vox Valvetronic 2x12. This thing cranks and have had no problems playing at bars and clubs.

That looks like a for-real Fender in the picture (kinda fuzzy, though). Can't be sad about that. Especially when their newest product is the "Road Worn" series.
I got a new bass for my birthday back in October to replace my Squier Jazz Bass. It's an Ibanez Jet-King.

I also have an older Pearl Export that I'm in the process of stripping and sanding. I'm going to give shells separately to my artist friends to have paint as they will, then give them a nice gloss and maybe some new hardware. Should be pretty cool when I'm finished.

I just use it for practice at home, but more specifically, I'm not gigging at the moment. However, were I to gig, I would use my acoustic, unless I had a great reason to drag the Roland out somewhere.
Unfortunately, my acoustic sounds like crap anyway, it needs work, which is why I don't feel bad about the stripping and re-painting it. When I need a decent sounding kit, I'll pick one up.
Maybe one of these:

No real reason specifically, in my research of mid-range kits, Gretsch consistently got great reviews about it's tone and range, and I like the finishes.
I'll take anything though, and when the time comes that I actually DO purchase a new set, it could be something entirely different once I sit down and test-run the drums.
Edit: I would like a stain instead of a wrap though, that's for sure.

Oh yeah bro hands down...not even close haha. Something about wrapped drums just feels like a nock off to me...Its like bro you just spent 4k on that DW kit why did you get it wrapped?
My old kit is a Pearl ELX with the AMber mist finish...im actually trying to sell that on now to help pay for what i just got haha!

Exactly. Crap....Now I'm going to be stuck looking at drums online all day, and I'll probably find myself at Guitar Center or Best Buy (ours just got a Musical Instruments Department a few months ago) drooling on the merchandise.

a couple years ago i upgraded to the Gretsch Renown Maple. I was shopping at guitar center and the tone was just perfect on it. very warm, and it is very versatile in the way it can be tuned and played. rock, jazz and everything in between, the kit responds nicely. the only kit i liked better at the store was a $3000 DW. so i was happy to pay a third of that price for a kit that sounded so good.

This is my Tama Starclassic Performer I got 3 years ago.
Mostly Tama Hardware, Pearl Eliminator pedals (meh).
14" Sabian fusion hats, 16" Paste Sig crash, 20" Zildjian Heavy Dry Ride, 18" Zildjian A Custom Crash. I don't care for posing, whatever sounded the best, I bought. The set gives off a GREAT tone if you spend just a little effort tuning your drum heads. However, it certainly lacks projection, you can believe Birch kits have a major drop-off in volume compared to Maple.

Hm, PhotoBucket is not your friend. The kit sounds nice though, great cymbal choices. I'm that same way about cymbals, if it sounds great, buy it. My favorite cymbal is a Paiste Prototype Crash I picked up at Guitar Center a few years back, it's incredible. I love my K Customs, but I've cracked 2 already, and that makes me sad :(.

I've played with several different setups over the years. I currently have two main basses that I play: a 5-string Warwick Thumb, and a 4-string Fender Jazz Deluxe. My amp is a Gallien-Krueger 2001RB rack mounted with a Furman power conditioner, DBX 166 compressor, & an Aphex aural exciter with big boom. My speaker cabinet is a SWR 8 x 10" Megoliath. I'd post pics from my most recent studio session but I'm not familiar with how to do so.

Otherwise, my ride is the K Custom Dry Heavy Ride. It's quiet, but versatile, for a ride that isn't supposed to be crashed on. I crash on it a little; too much and it sounds like a gong. Honestly, I wish I went with the A Custom Ping or Paiste 2002 ride. K is just TOO quiet. Paiste and Sabian cymbals have broken on me constantly. Zildjian seems to have the most durable cymbals out there.

for all you hardcore drummers, this is a question for you.
I am a new drummer, i dont care about gigging or playing in a band, I just love the sound of drums and the rhythms that go along with it, I constantly am tapping on the desk in class and have wanted to buy a new drumset for a long time.
My question is really pertaining to durability as much as great sound because Im not a serious drummer and really don't want to have to buy or replace heads and symbals frequently. I was wondering what are the most durable symbals and heads for drums. If they sound amazing thats a bonus, I just would really like durability. Obviously i dont want the sound to be **** but anything average sounding with good durability is what Im looking for. If you could recommend symbals and heads for me that would be cool. Also if you have favorites regarding toms, snares, or bass drums, that would be much appreciated too.

Well My first question is what type of a kit do you have? What are the tom sizes? And very importantly what type of music do you play?
I really like deeper warm tone to my kit I LOVE Remo Ambassador Coated and even the Remo Emporor Coated heads. For my kick I have ab Evans E-mad set up which I like very much. Cybals if you want them to last long Don't beat the breath out of them haha but it depends on budget and all sorts of things. I like Zildjian the best I have owned Zildjuan Sabian and Paiste and can say the Zildjians I have owned are by far my favorites they sound great and are durable. What sticks do you use? For me I find this is what I want the most durability from I live and Die by Vater recording drums sticks they are amazing and last forever before they start to lose any pop.
The best advice I can give whether you are playing out or want to or not is to play on stuff you are comfortable with. Who cares what I say you know you may love Paiste cymbals(which I personally cannot stand) and you may love Clear heads(where I prefere the warmness of a coated head) You have to find out what speaks to you and go with it.
The only right or wrong is if you like it or not...

The only right or wrong is if you like it or not...
This here.
Truth is, all heads wear out over time, and pretty much all cymbals can crack over time. As long as you don't wack the piss out of them constantly like they banged your mother, you should be fine.
Do keep in mind though, you get what you pay for. If you buy cymbals that cost as much as the average metal trash can lid - they'll likely sound similar.

BINGO!
The cool thing about drumming is no matter what level you are at you can make things the way you like them...Is spending 8 grand on a kit going to make you better? Not at all. If you are only going to play once a month in your room do you need a 380 dollar cymbal? No Way.... BUT if you are at a level where you are playing and you are trying to define your sound and your tone your going to have to pony up some cash to meet the expectations you are setting for yourself.

Cymbals, if played correctly should last a very long time. Most of the cymbals on my kit are over twenty years old now. Heads are pretty much the same. If you don't care too much about tone, and don't over play them, they can last a very long time.
On a side note, I just found out that I'll be playing percussion in the orchestra at the Little Theatre of Virginia Beach and their production of "Oklahoma". Should be fun! I'll be using my Roland TD-20s stage pro electronic drums, so I can cover all of the various percussion sounds that are called for.

Well you could have stopped at your first sentence. My old Sabians were B8 Pro and I had a Paiste Alpha crash. I also like to play pretty loud, it just wasn't a good mix. It's been about, hell 10 years now since I invested in good cymbals. Since then, I've lost one 16 inch A Custom crash from a crack in the bell. Think it had more to do with the way it was mounted than my style. The A Customs make the Paiste Signature I bought a few years back feel like I'm playing on a sheet of paper.

I just got a new bass the other week! It's awesome, I love it so much already. I think at some point I'll want a different gauge of strings since I don't especially like the tone I get with the lower 5th string (looking for more of a jazz sound than a harsh metal sound) at the moment.

Sorry, didn't make that very clear did I? Cymbals are around 20 years old, Heads around 3. Zildjian cymbals, Evans EC2 batter heads. Remo ambassadors resonant heads.
The electronic kit works great for the theatre. With over 500 sounds, I can cover a lot of parts. Also, plugging directly into the house PA allows the front of house guy to get a good mix.
I did a couple gigs with my band using the electronic kit, and it did fine there too. Just something about an acoustic kit in a live setting that I really missed.

Probably more of an actual string issue than gauge. If you want a warmer tone, try changing to flatwound strings. Roundwounds are generally brighter sounding.

Just something about an acoustic kit in a live setting that I really missed.
That is the line I was waiting for....I have never met a drummer who prefers electric kit live...Its always bc the soundguys need it or something never because its better. Ther thing for me is Even the nice Roland kits just dont feel like Im playing drums....its weird.
Also How lonog do you get out of your heads before you lose tone? I havn't change me reso heads is forever... I use Remo Emperor or Ambasador coated batter heads...

That really is a shame though man I love the warmth and the richness of the Ks what do think of the Z's
A lot brassier, cuts through nice and loud, very thick, heavy and resilient. Able to take a beating. Great for rock, not so much for jamming on.

I have a TD-6 that's all I have been able to play for the last like 2 years. Previously I had room mates and now I'm in an apartment so my acoustic set has been stacked up in storage, it breaks my heart. All I want to do is sit down for 20 minutes on an acoustic set with some music and jam out.

Right now I've got a Schecter Omen series guitar, an Ibanez RG7321FM Seven String (my baby :D), a sweet Ibanez bass I got for my birthday from my girlfriend (can't find the accurate model number to save my life) and I've got like 8 year old Jackson and BC Rich guitars laying around somewhere my house back home in Northern Virginia.
I'll post pictures after I'm done studying for this darn quiz tonight :(
Good to see a lot of drummers in here. It's hard as hell to find drummers and bassists these days.

Well, my current batter heads are around 3 years old. I don't play nearly as hard nor as often as I used to when I was younger. The reso's are original with the kit. (bought in '87) Probably time I changed those out. But right now, the acoustics are in their cases, and the e-drums are set up in my practice room, so no new heads anytime in the near future.

Just go with drum mutes. Definetly a great and cheap investment. Try different kinds out because some kill the sound more than others.

If you're in the market for a relatively inexpensive tube head, I'd recommend picking up the Peavey Windsor. Not typically a Peavy fan here, but its similarly designed like the JCM 800...very basic. No clean/dirty channels, just pre-amp & master volume. You can also dial between a Class A tone and Class B tone. I believe its specced for 4 EL34 as well.
I'm playing that off of a custom 2x12 cab (Budda speakers) in a 4 peice punk band, and this thing sounds damned good. Paid $225 on craigslist for it.

Where in richmond are you? I used to live on Floyd and also on grayland... I'm gonna be looking to play some shows up there in the future. I'm very familiar with the well-rounded music scene there... Pretty impressive things happening musically for such a small city. if you're in a punk band you've probably seen all my friend's bands at some point or another... permanent, flechette, memorial.. I used to be really big into the va beach/richmond punk and hardcore scenes in the late 90s and early 2000s

Heck I used to live on Floyd & Harrison for a couple of years. I'm still on floyd, but more towards Boulevard.
The scene is pretty cool up here -- not as cool as it was say 5 or 6 years ago, but it's getting rolling again. Surprisingly, we have the most fun playing house shows & parties. We played one yesterday with about 60 kids and it got wild! In fact, one 'noise' band broke out a chainsaw and started wreaking havoc on a steel chair. It was wild haha.
Look into the Camel, Strange Matter, Canal Club, Sprout, Bogarts, and Element Lounge for booking.
Also: rvashows.org is a cool community to connect/book with bands in the area. (sort of like a pheer.com replacement if you remember that)

Yeah man, I love the fact that there's actually a noise scene there. Thought it ain't my thing, i think it's awesome as **** that the music scene there is so all over the place it literally covers all walks of music. Obviously I'm on the electronic end of the spectrum... I don't know if you're into that scene or not but I've heard there have been raves up there on the regular. Are those the clubs that usually host that kind of music? I don't write trance or anything like that.. my music's more slowed down.. heavy reggae and dub and classic ambient influences... some percussive styles borrowed from the UK garage genre.

I have a Korg Trinity and a Korg M50. I love all things music.
Cool thread.
I played keyboards for 4 different gogo bands, played in a small jazz band, and took piano lessons for 13 years.
I continue to try and create a new genre of music that blends new age/celtic music, gogo, and and hip hop. "The Fountain" soundtrack and "Lady in the Water" soundtrack are my biggest influenecs right now. new age stuff with pretty piano melodies and dramatic strings give me goosebumps every time...
If i was still in the DC area, i'd love to get up with you guys and rock some random stuff :)

RD, gotta give you props on your taste in drums from the pic in the OP. I upgraded my pearl export kit a few years ago for a Sonor Force 3005 kit that looks almost the same as yours with the fade stain. I absolutely love them but have the same issue with not being able to play them currently.
I also use Zildjian cymbals (14" quickbeat hats, 17" K and 18" A crash, 18" china, 12" K splash, 21" K ride). Gonna get the Demondrive pedals at some point, but I'm not doing double kick that much anymore so it's not a priority. I actually sold my old Axis stuff when I swore off metal.
You can hear my old (defunct) band at here (http://www.purevolume.com/cryoseve) if you have any interest.

Used to play a gibson SG through a JCM2000 DSL, switched from electric to accoustic recently and now I'm playing a Breedlove C350cr. The breedlove has beautiful sound but im getting a lot of fret buzz. Its currently being set up as we speak so hopefully it will fix the issue.
Also, my band is putting out it first record on July 15th. I'm pretty stoked.

Yeah, most definitely. I'm not terribly into that scene, but it's getting pretty big here.
Every Tuesday, there's a rave called RVAlution at the Hat Factory (was called Toad's Place) in the Bottom. Probably about 1500-2000 people in there, and it's a wild good time! There has also been an influx of DJs and Dance Parties at certain bars & clubs, notably Sprout, Cellar Door, Bellytimber Tavern, etc. And my God, the women are hot! Get up here and do your thing man, you'll definitely find somethin!

Toad's place..... the only venue known to man to host a comedy show in which there were no seats. We saw Micheal showalter and micheal ian black there way back, damn funny fellows. I appreciate it man, I wonder how hard it is to get on that rave? I'd love to play in front of a crowd that large, that's quite the draw.

Yeah, I'm not too sure. I know they have groups from out of town sometimes do it - I would find em on facebook, or contact the Hat Factory directly...but it's a helluva time.
Yeah, Toad's Place was weird. I saw Gogol Bordello there, heckuva show. REALLY nice venue, but it never took off for some reason.

Ok so my cousin was telling me what happened to him today. Pretty much his whole rig got fried.
So he has his gear set up in his room, and all he has is one amp, a distortion pedal and guitar hooked up. He goes to turn it on and is getting nothing from the pedal, just a little buzzing. So he unplugs everything and plugs it back in. And when he turns it on sparks start flying from the pedal, and it traveled up his chord and into his guitar. he said sparks traveled up a couple of his strings and then back down inside the guitar. his reaction was to of course get the guitar the hell off of him and in doing so he burnt his leg when he dropped it. he said it was a definite burn cause he could smell the burnt hair from his leg.
When he told me this story i was like holy ****! I had never heard anything like that happen before.
Has anybody ever heard anything like that happen? The pedal was a Big Muff by Electro Harmonix. I actually have a version of the Big Muff so Im actually kind of scared haha. Not really, but it was quite a crazy story.

And since there are drummers here, I'll post a custom paint job I did on a friends bass drum.
My friend was a huge Incubus fan at the time I worked on it so there are 2 Brandon Boyd quotes from a book of art made by Boyd. I don't recall what the full quotes were but they were all related to music.
Enjoy!

I've fried a Big Muff pedal myself when I worked at Sam Ash Music. The culprit? My AC adapter wasn't the exact wattage that the pedal called for. I think I overloaded it.
