Actually, you're not supposed to quote large blocks of text, and that list might end up being a large one...

define disco.

He is right Dean, those were more like Radio songs back in the day. Not the ones pumping in the discos. I spent enough time and money in those places to know. I have to admit, I miss those days leisure suits and all. Back when the Redskins and Eagles had something in common, no Super Bowl wins.

I hear you. Back then most bands sold out to disco some how or another. Also are songs, that were regularly played at a disco, considered disco, like the funk music people are listing. If you take away funk they'd have run out of music pretty quick.

Valid... but even Rock the Casbah lacks the R&B-ish element in most disco.

alright, maybe i placed the value of punk rock right in there with disco (and therefore associated the two), but come to think of it PR came right after disco, so it was kinda like a 1,2 punch to the stomach of quality music lovers everywhere

True most of the Disco songs really sucked, but the funk filled in the gaps like Mafadden and White , GQ, and Instant Funk.

Disco usually either had a repetitive beat and melody, or were pretty much designed solely for club dancing. I don't really see Rock The Casbah falling into either category lol :)

Funk RULES OVER disco like the '91 Skins over the rest of the league! :2cents:

EDIT: In order to contribute to this thread and not just denigrate disco (which by and large deserves it) I'll nominate Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas.

Good one. Watching the linked vid I was struck by the thought that she wouldn't make it nowadays. Regardless of talent or personality, her chunkiness would put her on the outside looking in.

To be fair--and throw another wrench into the mix--I'd point out that the genre of "disco" didn't necessarily end when the 1970s did. As another poster already pointed out, disco is about a repetitive beat/melody to dance to in a club. This isn't to say that Lil' John and crap nowadays is technically "disco"--there are other genre-qualifying markers to consider, such as open high hat hits on the off beats, percussive, often wah-wahed guitar, or syncopated, octave-driven bass lines--but disco as a genre is still alive and well today. Pitchforkmedia.com's #1 single of 2008 ("Blind" by Hercules & Love Affair...youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb8S51M2GAc) definitely qualifies as "disco".

So if we're talking all disco I'd say that song.

But if we're talking only 70's disco, I'd mention "Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward.

Born to be Alive by Patrick Hernandez....nuff said.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3HciSe19gU

Being that I've DJ'ing in some sort of capacity for the last 15 years, I feel that Disco music was a very important phase in the history of music. Not only did it spawn house and freestyle (expose, Stevie B, Will to Power) music but also hip hop since most early hip hop tracks sampled disco songs. One of the earliest and most sampled disco records was "Good Times" by Chic.

I was going to add "Love Train" by the O'Jays but I'm thinking that song is more R/B Funk category. Wherever you place it, it's still a great positive jam.
