WARNER WILL HIT THE MARKET
Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2009, 6:56 p.m.

Don’t let that Super Bowl appearance fool you. A single season of stumbling onto an acorn doesn’t suddenly make a bad organization into a good one.

Case in point? The Cardinals are letting quarterback Kurt Warner hit the open market.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Warner’s agent spent the day in Arizona in the hopes of working out a new contract.

And to no avail.

Thus, Warner will become a free agent at midnight. Per Schefter, Warner is “not opposed” to making free-agent visits.

Schefter points out that there’s a “perception” that Warner plans to stay in Arizona, and that this “perception” is apparently affecting the negotiations.

But that “perception” comes from Warner’s own mouth. Indeed, Warner told Sporting News Radio earlier this week that he’s focused on re-signing with the Cardinals or retiring.

So now the question becomes whether someone else is willing to pay Warner more than the Cardinals have offered, and whether Warner is willing to walk. Reportedly, the Cardinals’ most recent offer was in the range of $10 million to $12 million per season on a two-year deal.

The Vikings seemed to be an ideal potential destination, before they agreed to acquire Sage Rosenfels from the Texans. Other teams for whom Warner would provide a significant upgrade include, in our view, the Bills, the Browns, the Titans, the Jaguars, the Texans, the Chiefs, the Raiders, the Redskins, the Bears, the Lions, the Buccaneers, and the 49ers.

I'd take Warner over JC any day of the week. Twice on Sundays.

That said, he ends up back in Arizona and/or retires.
