ES Coverage: 2009 FA - Haynesworth Presser

:helmet:

Good morning everybody! JimmiJo here, back where I belong, at Redskins Park in the press room. I've missed the place.

So we all woke up to some pretty exciting news. First the team agreed to a deal with DeAngelo Hall last night just before midnight that is reportedly for six-years and worth $54-million with $22.5 million guaranteed.

Then early this morning was the even bigger news that the team has agreed to terms with Albert Haynesworth. Haynesworth was the biggest name on the free agent market this year. The deal is said to be worth $100 million and includes $41 million in guarantees. According to reports, during the first 13 months of the contract, Haynesworth will earn approximately $32 million.

As you know the Haynesworth press conference is scheduled for 5PM today. I am here early to see if anything else develops in the meantime.

So what is the consensus with my fellow fans?

I will say that I love getting a guy this good in Haynesworth at the defensive tackle position. The money that is being reported however is staggering. I'm not a capologist so don't really know where the Redskins were before this deal or where they are now, but the consensus here in the press room is that with the Hall and Haynesworth signings, there is probably little left in the tank for other players in free agency and there are probably some guys going away from here this weekend.

My guess would be Shawn Springs and Jason Taylor. I don't know this definitively, but that is my sense.

So feel free to share your questions and thoughts. I will be around today and give you any tidbits I get.

Stand by...

12PM

We've been checking and right now the Haynesworth deal appears to be the biggest NFL contract ever in terms of guaranteed money.

12:15PM

Still nothing official on Springs from the team, but another writer just got off the phone with him and he confirmed he's been released.

12:30PM

Albert Haynesworth just arrived accompanied by his mother and a few others to surely include his agent. He came in wearing designer jeans and a blue sweater with a dress shirt underneath and his shirt tail hanging out slightly.

His group was greeted in the lobby by Vinny Cerrato.

I would guess he is on his way to sign his new contract.

1:05PM

And just like that, Albert Haynesworth is gone. Like I said before, he probably came to sign his deal. He will be back at 5PM.

2:13PM

I hear that Haynesworth is off getting his physical and that he will probably will not actually sign his deal until after that is completed.

Other than that it is pretty quiet here. The press room is slowly filling up but that's about it.

No word on Dockery or anyone else the team may be talking to.

Carter/Rogers' Quotes

I spoke to Andre Carter and Carlos Rogers a short while ago and got a few quotes on the addition of Albert Haynesworth and the release of Shawn Springs:

Andre Carter

On Haynesworth’s contract:

“On a personal level, more power to him.”

On what Haynesworth will bring to the team:

“He will definitely contribute to the defensive line. He’s a big guy, very physical, and with him in there it will create more and more 1-on-1 opportunities for [Cornelius] Griffin and for the defensive ends, Jason Taylor and myself.”

On Shawn Springs being released:

“It’s unfortunate for him. He’s been a real professional in this league for over 10 years. I didn’t really get to know him on a personal level, but I wish him the best.”

6:30PM

Just back in the press room. I've got some audio to upload beyond just the presser. Stand by...

Carlos Rogers

On if he is happy to have Haynesworth on the Redskins:

"Hell yea I'm happy about that. Alone with a healthy season from Jason Taylor, we can be the #1 defense in the league."

4:30PM

The press room has filled up. Other than that there is not much to report. We will probably start filing in the auditorium in short order and if they allow us to place our recordings on the podium, I will have audio following the event.

Writeup

Albert Haynesworth got the call at 3:45 AM and had to confirm the number he thought he heard the voice on the phone say. Haynesworth opened one eye and asked, “They said what?” After his agent repeated the figure, Haynesworth agreed to it and became the highest paid defensive player in the league and the highest in guaranteed money ever.

Despite this, Haynesworth appears to be a very down-to-earth guy. In his introductory press conference at Redskins Park, he was open and frank with his answers, and didn’t shy away from any questions or topics.

The presser started off with Coach Zorn speaking introducing Albert Haynesworth. Zorn spoke about how excited he was to have Haynesworth, and how excited he got as it became clear this morning that the Redskins were going to land him. For an offensive coach, Zorn struck me as more than pleased to be introducing Haynesworth. Zorn spoke for a few moments and then turned the podium over to the team’s newest star.

Haynesworth opened up with a few prepared words. He immediately referenced the incident involving Andre Gurode in 2006 when Haynesworth was suspended for five games for kicking off Gurode's helmet and stomping his head. Haynesworth was contrite in talking about it, saying that it is not representative of who he is.

“What happened that day was really a bad day for me, and really tested my character,” he said. He explained that he has apologized to Gurode and that they spent time hanging out during the week of the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

Haynesworth acknowledged that as the highest paid defensive player there is a lot of pressure on him. When one writer suggested that though expectations are high, it will take the contributions of the other players on defense, Haynesworth said, “With the contract, it’s going to be all on me.” He said this in a manner that suggested that with this huge contract, he understands that he will be subject to a lot of scrutiny.

When asked about interest from other teams and what made Washington attractive, Haynesworth said that Washington reminds him a lot of Tennessee when he was drafted. “It really reminded me of being drafted by Tennessee, coming into the league,” he said. “A team that was like 9-7, 8-8, right there on that verge, a team that needed only a couple little pieces to put you over that top.”

Haynesworth spoke about the history of the Redskins and said, “I really wanted to be a part of it.”

In response to a question by Doc Walker, Haynesworth paid homage to Reggie White. “I want to be Reggie,” he said. “Just to be in the same sentence; Albert Haynesworth and Reggie White in the same sentence is amazing. Like I told my agent, all I have to do is go out and play ball.”

Haynesworth was asked about his motivation having now signed such a large deal. “You’re not going to remember Albert Haynesworth as a bust or the guy who had the Dallas incident,” he said. “You’re going to remember him as a great player. That’s what I live for. The money’s awesome, it’s great, but when I line up and I put that helmet on, it’s to kick butt and to make sure that guy knows that I’m the best player out there.”

“If you look at my game, I’m a player that goes straight forward. I’m a disruptive player. I take on the double-team, I free up guys. And that’s what I want to play like. I want to be able to attack my gap and make plays, and have other players make plays off of me,” he said.

“This is going to be fun,” he said.

Haynesworth was asked if coming into free agency he thought he would be the most sought-after player and command such a large contract. “I wanted to be the best player out there so I guess, ‘yes’ to your question. My goal is to be the best player out there.”

There was some comic relief towards the end of the presser when he was asked if there was one player or member of the organization that he felt affinity for more than others. Without hesitating Haynesworth responded, “Definitely I would say Dan Snyder.”

Well gang, I’m going to wind this up and read up on what you thought of the presser. I had a great time covering today and depending on what the team does, you will either hear from this weekend or not. It does appear that there will be a press conference Monday for DeAngelo Hall.

Well news just broke that Springs has been cut which saves the team 6 mill. Hopefully this means that we look to get an OLineman, preferably Dock.

Personally, I like the move for Fat Albert, but as you stated the investment is rediculous. I'm just crossing my fingers that he doesn't get some freak (P. Daniels) injury in training camp or preseason that would keep him out any signifigant time. To be continued.....

Well I sure hope we keep Jason Taylor. We need that Pro Bowler to play LB/DE and can help keep pressure on QBS. Releasing him would null and void the whole Haynesworth situation

Great point. If we have Haynesworth, but no DEs, we will still blow.

I too worry about the money and what it does for us re-signing the likes of Carlos, Rocky McIntosh, LL and even the rookies and JC in the future. We've heard that previous monster contracts given out by the Skins would cripple the future and it seems as though they always find a way to keep who they really want. Let's hope that's the case in the future or that an uncapped NFL is really on the horizon because then any of this doesn't really matter.

Y'know. It's weird, but I'm not as excited as I should be. Not trying to be a gloomer, but all I keep thinkng is how much help the O side of the ball needs and how I've been here for the "big singing" or "signings" (though this is a bigger single one) and not seen it translate into a deep play off run or evena play off run at all. I think of all that money poured into the O. I'll feel better later, (AH is a serious force) particularly if we get that help on the o line.

So, Shawn Springs is likely being released :( Oh well, at least I hope that means Rogers stays put as the #2 CB behind Hall.

I like the addition of Haynesworth, but is he being overpaid?

The quote from 'los makes me feel a bit better about his attitude going into this season.I really like the guy and think he's a very talented CB but I was a little worried about his earlier incedent'quotes along with possible sour grapes about Hall's deal. Then again, I'll try not to read into any of this too much.

Thanks for the interviews and quotes.

Good to see Rogers liking the Haynesworth move by establishing pressure up front. That's been the one element missing from our defense for the last 4 years or so, beside some game stretches to close out 2005 and 2007. Pressure generates the turnovers we need. Rogers'll get more opportunities to catch the ball, so he better work on the jugs machine. :)

Isn't funny the JLC and Reid went on and on with those team reports and offseason reports about how we will not make noise in FA, maybe just resigning hall and thats it.

They never named their source, it was always "my sources tell me and Jason" Uggghh I just hated when either one of them kept saying that.

Anyway, I'm just happy that they were completely wrong.

Good work JJ

I had always doubted that Springs was really much of a "team" guy. Andre seems like a great guy and SS seems like a prima donna ass imho.

maybe i am off but I haven't felt good about SS in a long time as part of this team. Good riddance.

It was good to hear Carlos Rogers say something like that because he sounded as good as outta here at the end of the season after he thought he wasn't wanted here. I think its interesting that AC never knew Shawn Springs on a personal level so maybe he wasn't the leader they keep saying he was. He was a great guy and I definitely believe he was a leader to his fellow DBs but he wasn't a leader of the entire defense so we will be okay. DeAngelo, Carlos & Laron can be our young future leaders.

I was a bit surprised about Carter's comments on Springs as well. Maybe it has something to do with the D-line not mingling much with the D-backs?

I'm not as hyped as everyone about Haynesworth, I can definitely see him using some of that money to have a recliner installed on the 50-yard line, kicking back and relaxing on his huge amount of money. There's no in-between. He's either a beast for us, or doesn't stay motivated/want to play if he has the slightest injury.

I am very happy about Hall though, mainly because it means Springs is gone, which means Rogers is staying. I definitely wanted to see us clear some cap room on Springs and keep Rogers amidst the reports we're shopping him for a second-round pick.

Dockery would be a great addition having previous experience here, but I'd probably leave free agency alone after that. We need to have the best draft we can with our limited picks.

February-27th-2009, 03:53 PM
The #13 pick adds one impact player.

So, if the club is able to sign Dockery to play LG and uses the #13 pick on either a RT or a DE the team (ignoring the cap for a minute and future implications) looks to have addressed a number of the key areas for improvement in 2009 that had been identified.

A replacement for Marcus Washington will have to be found. The young wide receivers will need to step up. Jason Campbell will need to push along his development to the next step, not only making the routine plays but reading defenses and taking advantage of weaknesses/nuances when he sees the field on particular plays, etc.

I don't like the money for Hall as $23M seems a bit high, I was thinking perhas $16M or $17M, but that dope out in Oakland set the table by giving Asomugha so much the Redskins had to up their offer quite a bit to get the deal done.

Again, I wouldn't necessarily try to retool the club this way but we'll have to see if the risks and rewards balance themselves out over time.

At least in 2009 the Redskins acquired two HEALTHY free agents that are BOTH under 30 years of age and in their athletic primes.

THAT has not always been the case in the past.

Actually, I'd pick either a RT or a LB at 13. The only DE I'd consider there is Orapko and I expect he will be gone.

Yes, most of the remainder is going to be the players we currently have stepping up and becoming bigtime.

I did hear an Extremeskins plug though. I loved it! I thought Albert did a great job answering questions. I thought some of the reporters kept asking the same questions over and over again. I swear he was asked like 3 or 4 times what other teams were interested in him and people asked him 3 or 4 different ways about how he is going to prove he is worth the money and stay motivated. I heard Doc Walker drop a Reggie White comparison and Albert seemed to love it.

I am in disbelief. I do not see how they could get Hall and Albert and stay under the cap. I don't care about spending Dan's money and I don't care if anybody gets a great payday. I obviously don't understand the math. If I was a betting guy, somebody else would be driving my car over this deal.

Having fessed up that I obviously cannot do NFL math, I hope this expenditure on the D now means we draft some OL.

Right there with you, Jumbo. Well......pretty much. I confess, I'm pretty psyched about this signing, but not quite as jovial as I could be.

While I'm happy that we've just made an already good defense like, REALLY REALLY good..........was that our answer to the offensive woes? I'm not jumping to conclusions, I realize FA has just begun and the draft is fast approaching, but honestly........assuming our D could have duplicated last year's performance..........a serious facelift on "O" could have propelled the team to an entirely new level. Can this still be achieved? We'll see.

Now, I'm going to TRY to maintain as much optimism for what will be done to address the offense. I'm not going to regurgitate my feelings about the key issue on offense. Anyone who's seen any of my recent posts knows where I stand. But aside from that, I want to see the O-line addressed.........PROPERLY! Bringing in a young, fast, game-breaking RB and one true number 1 wide receiver wouldn't hurt, either.

I dunno. Trying to stay positive here, but I truly hope this wasn't our answer to an offense averaging under 20 PPG. That would be..........offensive.

I read an interview with him about a year or so after the "stomp". It was about how, when he was suspended he reevaluated his life and game, went to a personal coach, who taught him to use his anger on the field to help his team win.

I liked him from then on, and although I was not a huge fan of this move initially because of the money, he is one of my favorite players. He is a good genuine person.

He came to Washington, because he wants to win and we are close. He is an absolute beast and makes our D a whole lot better. He is also a team first guy and Gibbs would be proud.

Great Presser. Zorn on the other hand looked terrible.

Mark The Homer

There was a discussion several weeks ago regarding reinforcing the O vs the D. Seems most knowlegeable respected members made comments saying it is better to reinforce the D. On the surface, this seems odd to me.

OTOH, if we have a defense that allows so few points that a so-so offense can be enough to win the ball game, I guess it makes sense.

Still, you have to wonder. I've seen this sooo many times over the years - signing these big splash players.

Then I read some more and think it's a great move.

I go back and forth.

The Wash Post this morning:

Washington offensive coordinator Sherman Smith previously coached the Titans' running backs for 13 seasons. He was with the organization when Haynesworth was drafted and watched him develop into one the best, if not the best, player at his position.

"I like Albert, and Albert definitely is not" a bad person, Smith said. "Some things happened that were wrong, and Albert knows that, and he's learned and grown from it. When people make mistakes, that's all you can ask. But I know the type of person Albert is, he's got some pride, and he's going to want to come in here and play the way he's capable of playing. I was with Albert when he got drafted in Tennessee, and he was an impact player for us. He had an incident in 2006 where he kicked the center for the Cowboys, and he took that five-game suspension.

"He came back, and he just played ball. When he kicked [Gurode] in the head, you heard comments from players all around the league: 'I wouldn't want that guy on my team. He's this and he's that.' Well, in 2007, those same guys who were saying negative stuff about him voted him to the Pro Bowl. And then in 2008, those same guys voted him to the Pro Bowl again. They saw that he had changed. He came back, and he wasn't the same. He controlled his anger, and he just played good football. This is a great move. He's going to have an instant impact on our team. Dan Snyder wants to win, and he went after the best guy out there."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/27/AR2009022703312_2.html?sid=ST2009022800147

I couldn't help but be won over by the guy. He might be the most intelligent and well-spoken DT I've ever heard speak for an extended period of time, and he was completely willing to talk about his transgressions and how they made him consider long-term thinking about life. He couldn't have been more of a likable guy.

Do I still worry that the cap hit won't be worth it? Of course. But Albert blew away my expectations for his introductions. Hopefully he'll repeat that effect a bunch of times for the next half-decade or so.
