But I just got off the phone with a guy at the ticket office. I called in to pay my invoice (just love doing that  ).
Me: "I was told last year that new jumbotrons were coming, but y'all ran out of time. Are they installed for this season, or not?"
Guy: "Uh, I don't know actually. Let me go ask."
Put me on hold, got to listen to more riveting play by play of the TD pass to Randle El.
Guy: "The screens that are there will be the same ones from last year."
Me: "So, no new jumbotrons, no high-def. Same old ones."
Guy: "Yep. Have a nice day."
Me: "Albert Haynesworth. Albert Haynesworth. Albert Haynes...."

The people that are expecting a new HD screen at FedEx are funny. First off, no new screens will be installed there b/c of the way it is constructed, it's true. They would have to rip out entire sections of stadium to put the cooling section for the HD screen.
Secondly, does Dan Snyder seem like the type of owner that would upgrade the stadium without passing the costs on? You'll know if there is going to be a new HD screen at FedEx because everybody on this message board will be complaining about the financing for it.

February-27th-2009, 11:43 AM
Danny would have to pay out of pocket for new jumbos.
There's no local government for Danny to hit up for tax subsidies the way most teams who play in publicly financed facilities do whenever they want upgrades to "remain competitive".
The state of MD paid for the new HD jumbo at Camden Yards and the DCSEC paid for the new HD at Verizon Ctr. despite the fact that Abe paid out of pocket for nearly all of the construction costs at the MCI Centre.

Abe should be in the HOF for sports owners. He almost single handedly financed the construction of two sports arenas in a 25 year span while asking virtually nothing from the tax payers.
I wouldn't put it past Danny to put his hand out to PG County for IT upgrades if they continue to push forward w/their soccer stadium project.

I disagree. Snyder likes to talk about improving the fan experience. Well, video screens capable of showing replays isn't much to ask. Every new stadium being built has state of the art video capability.
I saw the Ravens' stadium last spring at the NCAA lacrosse tournament. Those video screens were awesome. Something like that at FedEx would be sweet. It's a big ticket item, though. Maybe Haynesworth will kick in a few bucks.

False. Big screens are a cash making machine. Advertisers love having their spot played during the game to "captive" audience. At most sporting events I have worked, they track every ad, every time. It is a revenue stream that DS is missing out on. If he could get those screens in, he would.
da#1skinsfan
February-28th-2009, 09:08 AM
Those advertisers are advertising regardless of the screen. DS knows this.
Screen = zero impact on revenue and large impact on costs = lower profitability = losing proposition with Danny 100 out of 100 times.
Its not happening, for years. Everyone goes through this every offseason but trust me those screens are not going anywhere unless a full 180 is pulled within the offices of Fedex Field.

You have to wonder if Snyder is just biding his time and saving his cash for a move back into the city... thoughts?

Uh, that's not what this is about. I've been to every home game from '05-present, plus 4 away games if you include the HOF game in Canton. And I'm pretty sure it would be hard to find a setup at CC that beats the one in my basement. ;)
Spending big buck$ on players is another topic for another thread. We are at or near the top of most profitable sports franchises in the world, every year.
Yet how many NFL franchises have a worse stadium experience than ours? Please tell me.

I agree wholeheartedly with TLC-and not just because his sig rocks. The tinytron and to a certain degree, our stadium yields a sorry gameday experience compared to others around the league. Strangely enough, Snyder seemed to be able to find $$$ to make improvements that would allow him squeeze more fannies into the stadium.
However as with most other complaints about the team, nobody would care much if we were consistently winning.

February-28th-2009, 09:39 PM
From what I understand, Snyder himself has said that the design of the stadium, something that was already constructed BEFORE he bought the team, does not allow them the opportunity to make it bigger. So, to be honest, I didn't think this would ever happen anyway. I would guess that any chance this is going to happen is if/when we get a new stadium...hopefully in DC.

If you study how the jumbotron was originally designed and installed, it is almost as if JKC anticipated installing a bigger tron some day. A more horizontal screen would effectively double or even triple its size without losing a single seat.

At least that's a character mark. Character is something our stadium has sorely needed for the last 11 years.
If Danny does anything about the walls, he'll probably put up more advertisements. That removable wall paper nearly every other team in the league has is kind of cliche.

TLC - Taco Bell, etc on that link you posted - whats the difference between that and Bud, Smirnoff and FedEx above?
It just wouldnt make financial sense to do it - and again, its simply not happening. If you disagree with this move maybe Dan and co. will share with you the research they have done to decide against this themselves if you ask nicely.

For one thing, you can rotate the ads. Two, you can have a corporate sponsor ie. the Chick Fil-A Jumbotron. But let's not lose the point that we deserve the best gameday experience possible, like seeing a replay of a key turnover, force out, fumble etc.

not sure if JumboTrons need fiber or RG-6.
Even IF fiber is run in the stadium... I don't think it goes straight to the screens. Running of cable is required. Whether they have the money doesn't seem to be the question. THe question seems to be whether or not he wants to spend it at this time.

Yes, just got one, although the picture of the HD channels on the regular TV look pretty sharp. On digital TV the high def signals come in great. I'm also impressed with the internet download speeds. I had someone send me a 5 MB file and it took 1 sec at 5MB/sec (obviously). Although at times it is around 150kb/sec.
Anyway, fiber seems like a good service. THe potential is far greater than cable to the house.

I believe the Skins have some room to work with for new screens. They could remove the Budweiser signs to either side of current screens to expand what they have got. I'm not sure of the term of the advertising agreement with Budweiser, but I'm sure it would be workable.
The problem is that there is a "waiting list," of potential season ticket holders and our owner has a suite, so there is just no motivation on their part to create a better game experience for the rest of the stadium. Some team owners care about what they create for their fans (Cowboys), some stadium owners need to compete for Bowl games / Superbowls (Cardinals, Dolphins), and some need to have great facilities to bring in fans when the team isn't doing well (Colts). The Skins don't fall into any of those categories.

:silly:
No, I'm not saying that they aren't doing well now. I'm sure their season tickets are sold out given the run that they've had over the last decade. But Manning won't be around forever, and they need to be prepared if they return to the 1980s and 1990s Colts. They don't have the luxury of having a fanbase that will (Redskins, Steelers etc.) continue to sell out the Dome when the team fares poorly - that's all I'm saying.
Maybe the Colts were a bad example. The Browns would be a better example of a team that needs to have great facilities to help the draw. In any event, the Redskins continue to "sell out" the stadium despite average play on the field and poor facilities at FedEx, so there is no reason to upgrade the facilities for the fan's experience (Not that Snyder hasn't tried to upgrade the on-field performance to satisfy his own needs there).

Looks awesome.
Liberty U has tons of funding. Falwell's death a couple years ago cleared the school's debt with the insurance. They are expanding and constructing new buildings all the time.

Is this true that there could never be a jumbotron in there without some sort of major overhaul to the stadium?
Baltimore is getting new jumbotrons next year. Their current ones are 10000000 times better than ours.

At least we HAVE a scoreboard. GMU doesn't even have a video scoreboard
And a new stadium IN the city=win.

They could put one on the top of the stadium the way they have it in Miami. That would actually open up room for even more seats where the current screens are.

The problem is that you need a specific ratio of height to width of the screen for it to look natural, for the height available, the width would be so narrow that the screen would be too small.
