View Full Version : Did we miss an opportunity with Springs?

Spilled milk question, but I'm curious about something. We made no secret that re-signing Hall was our top priority this offseason before we ended up finishing the deal to the league. After he was re-signed we cut Springs. So here's what I'm wondering...

If we knew we were going to cut him if we got Hall, did we miss an opportunity to trade Springs for a draft pick to another team before we re-signed Hall or did we do the right thing by keeping him here just in case we didn't keep Hall? Once we re-signed Hall the league knew we were going to cut Springs and I've read reports that we tried to trade him prior to cutting him but no one was interested because they knew what we were going to do.

Does anyone think we should have traded Springs then announced that we re-signed Hall? Once the deal was in place with Hall what was the rush to announce it to the public? Does anyone think another team would have traded for him?

I know thats a hindsight question and it doesn't matter, just curious about why things went down the way they did? Maybe the next time we are in a position like this we do things differently

Dont forget the 6mil cap hit. That's a big reason why trades were pretty much off the table despite the Hall situation. Everyone knew wwe didnt wanna pay that and neither did any other team.

I think the situation with Springs was handled the right way for once. A younger guy was brought in (Carlos) and developed, then the older guy is slowly phased out.

Could the FO do a little less leaking and sinde comments? Yea, but at least there is a replacement for a change.

Have a beer and relax, you're over-thinking stuff.

To be honest, I don't think anybody would have traded for Springs. With his age, health concerns, and the cap hit he had, there was no way any organization would've wasted a pick by trading for him.

He'll get a job and who knows we might sign him back at about 1/5th of what he originally had.

Just wondering brother, but a beer does sound really good. Thanks for the suggestion

No -- I think they did it the right way. Trading him (if possible) would have engendered a cap hit. Now they have to seriously think about what to do with Rogers. At the end of the day do we need two top-paid CBs? Cuz Rogers will want the same money next year. Or do we trade Rogers for a pick or picks now?

I don't think anyone was gonna offer a decent deal for Springs. Mostly for his injury prone history.

I really doubt we could have got anything for him. I mean even Shawn knew the week the Skins season ended he was likely to be gone...It was never a huge secret, not even Matt Millen would have traded for him knowing we were gonna cut him.

No one wanted Springs.

The end.

(You know...the Redskins should pay me, like, $100 a day just to go from thread to thread and explain everything in a sentence. It would be like Ollie Williams' weather reports. Except I'm white and not a cartoon).

I think the Patriots would have gave us a pick for SPrings because they are DESPERATE for CBs so yeah...but whatever

It has always been the Pats' way to give up draft picks for old guys.

Oh ...wait...that's the exact opposite of the Pats' way.

No one was going to trade for Spring's cheerleader service for 5 games a year and possibly 11 games of actually playing.

Considering there are a bunch of teams lining up for his services, I don't think they are THAT concerned about him. The cap hit would be a non-issue because who traded for him simply could do a new contract with him.

If we had the ability to keep him on the roster, we might have had the ability to trade him, but that's one of the downsides to the way we do our cap management. Because we play it close to the limit, we can't just hang onto a player and hope that another team finally breaks down and trades for the player.
