View Full Version : Will Seat upgrades be better this year than usual?

Due to the economy, the Redskins 8-8 record, etc. will Seat upgrades be better this year than usual? I wish there was a way to find out how many people chose not to renew this year. I hate to see fans leave and give up their seats but I also would love to move closer to midfield and/or closer to the field.

It is just my opinion, but I think that they will be. Renewing was hard this year given the state of the economy, and I'm sure that turnover will be greater than in good years. I'm just not sure how much greater. I guess we will see soon!

sorry guys, the best seat upgrades are now only reserved for premium members (tailgate and touchdown club)

When I paid my season ticket invoice last week, I brought this up with the rep in the ticket office that I was working with and he replied that they were expecting the usual 2% turnover this year and nothing more substantial due to the economy. With a 90,000 seat stadium that would only be a loss of 1800 ticket holders. Sounds a little low to me given the state of the economy, job losses, and earlier payment deadline for tickets this season.

Recalculate: the 2% turnover applies to GA seats and there are only 65,000 of those, meaning about 1,200 seats. The other seats are on contracts.

The most interesting thing in sports over the next 18 months will be the business side of things.
The NBA is going to have a financial bloodletting next year.
MLB will probably be fine with attendance, but will probably lose millions in advertising.
And the NFL is not going to be immune between the CBA expiring and the owners suddenly being lighter in the pockets.
The issue is this: the owners corporations that own these times have probably lost billions in investments over the past 6 months. The Maloof Brothers are broke. The Mets were caught up in the Madoff scandal. And that's just what is being reported.
These are interesting times.

The question is: Do those people even exist any longer?
I just got my housing assessmnet from Fairfax County. My home lost 30 percent in its assessment last year. I now owe tens of thousands more on my home than what it is worth. My employer just implemented a hiring freeze and slashed its capital budget to $0 - just precautions we are told.
I ain't spending a dime for anything that is not essential. And I actually am financially ok.

If only 1200 seats turned over in a typical year, the wait list would take 100+ years to cycle around. Unless of course, 9 of 10 people didn't sign up when their name was called. Then it would take ten + years. But I think it's more like five years isn't it? But if 9 of 10 people don't sign up when called, that number doesn't jive with only 2% giving up their seats. Something doesn't add up.
For them to say "they were expecting the usual 2% turnover this year" is fantasy. Come on. Look at the front page of any newspaper at any day over the past four months. Consumers are not spending.
Anyway, I'm sure the actual turnover rate is confidential.
And IMO, the answer to the thread title is yes.

I decreased the number of tickets that I buy from 4 to 2. Hopefully the upgrades will be better this year. Last year, I moved down 1 row in the same section.

Mark,
I did find this on Redskins.com in regard to TGC seat upgrades. I know of 4 TGC members that have NEVER been offered an upgrade and like I had previously stated I was given 1 upgrade in 6 years.
Watch the game from the most sought after seating at FedExField. Also, enjoy priority relocations within the lower bowl so you get improved seat location, if available, every year.
[COLOR=red]
Charging the exorbitant TGC initiation fee ($1750 per ticket) and the ridiculous price for the wristbands ($1200/yr), you'd think that they'd at least offer what they advertise to keep those members.
I guess their out is in those two words...."if available"

I did the same thing. I downgraded from four to two. I have moved down five or six rows in the same section over my six years of being a season ticket holder. And its not like I am in a great location either.
My brother has tickets in another section and has been a season ticket holder for about three years. He moved down seven or eight rows last year.

Here is something to donsider: Whatever the Redskins tell you regarding the business side of the team is a flat out lie. Like Mark has written, use your eyes and ears.
According to the team, the wait list has 200,000 names and the turnover is 2 percent each year.
That means it would take 100 years to go through the list.
Yet, the wait is about 5 or 6 years.
So what do you believe? The facts? Or Karl Swanson?
I go with the facts.
My guess is that there are about 40,000 to 50,000 real names on the list at present. And turnover has been about 5 or 6 percent.
I have a feelling that very very very few people on that list are going to have a few spare thousand dollars lying around this year. And a lot of people - and companies - are going to drop tickets.
Here is a project for Mark come September. I want you to scan the luxury boxes and see how many are empty. As Bill Simmons pointed out in his NBA column last week, a lot of companies are locked into their luxury boxes on multi-year contracts. However, a lot of them have decided to eat the cost and just not use them. It costs several thousand to stock those things with booze and food. And no company - at present - has any entertainment budget. Those were the first things slashed.

I have downgraded from 4 to 3, so I'm hoping that this will help, cause I remember people last year getting better upgrades due to having an odd number of seats. Also, like MTH said, there is no way that the 2% figure is real, just no way!

Mark, ...I guess their out is in those two words...."if available"Yeah. Well, I think there's tons more seats that open up upstairs than downstairs. Also the TGC are kind of cubby-holed already, seeing as how almost all open seats on the sidelines are reserved for the TD Club. Reading about TGC seats, they freely mention "priority relocations within the lower bowl" but they don't mention that almost all the sidelines seats are off limits to the Tailgate Club. So it's kind of an interesting phrase that the team uses there. Truth is, there is nothing priority about the relocations. In fact, it's the opposite. Bottom line: It really pays to do your research before you buy into the Tailgate Club. Unfortunately, most people don't learn these fine undocumented details until afterwards.

Well, I'd imagine the team is having just as much trouble keeping the suites filled as they are the loge. Contracts are expiring, and I seriously doubt many of those leaseholders are going to be re-upping. I have heard of two banks (Bank of America and Chevy Chase Bank IIRC) that have suites on the 50. I bet there are others. Think they'll re-up? I kinda doubt it.

Only 2% of STH's decline renewal? LOL!
The TO has been saying that since at least 2003 when they first tried to hustle me into TGC seating.

You are not suggesting that the Redskins would lie to their loyal customers, are you?

98% retention is hard to believe given the number of ads in the classifieds forum for season tickets at or below face that are being ignored by this site's members. Several have offered their tickets at substantial discounts. For example, the ad below is for a (almost) 30% discount from face. Extremeskins members just shrug.

Imagine the outrage if the Packers starting selling premium seats within their GA seating bowl as a way to circumvent the waiting list.

Yes, we still exist - although hopefully there are far fewer of us this year. I'm a tailgate club member and I spoke to my sales rep last week. I asked him flat out if he expected there to be better upgrade chances this year, and although he wouldn't come out and say "yes," he basically admitted that if there were going to be a year for sizable upgrades, this would be it.
Only those who paid their invoices on time are eligable for upgrades and he told me that it'll be about 2 weeks before they get to the lower level seat changes. Even if there is only 2% turnover, it seems as though a lot more people came in with late or partial payments, meaning that those of us who paid on time should be in very good positions for upgrades.

But the question is for those of us who paid on time, will we be automatically upgraded or do we have to call in at the "perfect" time to be upgraded?

I have talked to the TO several times over the past couple months concerning upgrades and I have received the same story each time:
When they do the upgrades everyone that paid on time will be eligible for a upgrade. Once the upgrades are done the TO is sending out a e-mail to everyone that was upgraded, no matter if the upgrade resulted in you owing more money or not.
That is different from years past when they only contacted the STH that were being offered upgrades in to a more expensive GA section.
We'll see, I have my fingers crossed.... I'd love to closer to the 50 or a few rows down, hell while I'm dreaming... how about both!

This is the way it SHOULD be done. All upgrades done behind the scenes in a coordinated manner. Not by people calling in and getting the right person on the line.
I hope this is what occurs...though I have my doubts. :(

Well, I agree with that in so far as being upgraded within your own section/pay scale. If you're getting upgraded to something more expensive, I think they should contact you first.

Ok, then how 'bout a conditional upgrade and, if money is involved, you have a week to contact office and pay? If you don't pay, then upgrade offer goes elsewhere.
If no money is involved, maybe the plan could be automated to the point where you respond to the email only if you DO NOT want the upgrade.
Just batting around possible solutions.

If things don't turn around on the field soon, instead of a 90 thousand seat money making machine, Danny's gonna end up with a 90 thousand seat albatross around his neck.
