They're talking about Derek Morris drawing serious interest from Boston.

Also saying that Morris is the one type of player that the Caps truly need that is available.

'Too early to tell' on Bouwmeester; still no word on Bill Guerin
Wednesday, March 4, 2009 | Feedback | Print Entry
With Chris Pronger seemingly off the market, or kind of, barring a great offer, what about Jay Bouwmeester?

A Panthers source said at 9 a.m. ET it was "too early to tell" whether Bouwmeester (a UFA July 1) would be moved. In other words, they're still waiting for the best offers.

Tough call for Panthers GM Jacques Martin.

On Long Island, GM Garth Snow is giving one last try to complete a Bill Guerin trade that he's been working on since Saturday. A source close to the situation said that if the deal doesn't go through soon today, Snow will move on to a Plan B.

In Chicago, the Blackhawks are close to acquiring a forward, ESPN.com's Scott Burnside tells us.

Maybe I missed it.

LeBrun (1:11 p.m. ET): Just heard from inside the Panthers' war room and they're still no closer to making a call on Bouwmeester. We're told Vancouver and Philadelphia charging hard on Bouwmeester. Also on Bill Guerin, we're told the original deal that began Saturday is now "dead" and Isles GM Garth Snow is working on Plan B.

From nhl.com's deadline blog:
Gaborik in Play?
03.04.2009 / 2:28 PM

Mike Russo, the Minnesota Wild beat reporter for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, is speaking right now on NHL Live Radio via the NHL Network and he is saying that his sources are telling him that Marian Gaborik is in play. It would be huge news if the Wild are able to trade Gaborik in the next 30 minutes or so. Gaborik is still out now, but he is expected back in time for the playoffs.

Keep refreshing to find out if there are any more details or if this is just rumors.

And, they just said on NHL Live Radio that RDS is reporting the Senators sent Chris Neil to Florida. Ottawa had been trying to re-sign Neil all day, but apparently they couldn't come to terms. Again, keep refreshing for more details.

Depends on who we play... Just because we've had a couple ****ty games doesn't mean we're not good. There are only a couple teams in the East, Philly and Boston, that I think would be favored against us in a 7 game series. Everyone else we can beat if we play tough.

He's actually pretty right. Morris wasn't a good idea and I don't know if any defenseman that moved today would've been that much of an upgrade outside of Leopold. Uh he was on the second pairing for Phoenix with Jovo. A hitter you say? Wow, who are our hitters on D right now? Do we have one? Erskine? Cool. He belongs on the third pairing and he is no where near the dman that Morris is. Have you seen Morris play? He doesn't need to bring offense. Jovocop has been horrible for Phoenix this year, absolute garbage so I wouldn't read too much into him being on the 2nd pairing there. Jurcina has been on the 2nd pairing at times here too, doesn't mean anything. He does clear the crease but I wouldn't call his D SOLID at all, that's a reach. He's a MINUS-13 for pete's sake. Juice is a plus-3. Jurcina makes around 700K, Derek Morris makes around 4 million. If you think that he's 3 million dollars better than Jurcina you give me a break. He brings crease clearing, that's it, he's a slight upgrade, period.

No **** he is -13, the Coyotes are the 6th worst team in the league. He does play solid d, where are you coming up with some of these claims? Jurcina "sometimes" has played 2nd pairing due to injuries for the most part to Poti and co. Morris might not be worth 3 more mil than Jurcina but he is a DEFINITE upgrade over Jurcina and would've been a very solid 2nd line dman here paired with Mo.
And we sure could've used some of that "crease clearing" during last year's playoff series against Philly.

This is our team now, we ride or die with this group. I stand by it. There is only one team that will have taken the season series from us in the East when all is said and done and that's Philly. If they finish 4 and we finish two I don't think we see them in the playoffs. This is it. Nothing else to do but run for the cup.

yes we certainly could have. the refs weren't doing anything about philly's constant runs at our goalie so we should have.

Very true. We have a very young talented squad and we have some time to make moves down the line, but it would've been nice to see us at least acquire a dman with experience this deadline. We were the only team in the East to not make a move. I think we can get out of the first round this year but from there who knows. Still a month to go and alot to play out.

He's decent player but he's overrated. Just because he's a definite upgrade doesn't mean that he's far and away a 20 times better defenseman. He's an upgrade, but he's not as big of one as you're making him out to be. He plays physical but people have always been waiting for him to break out and become a top defenseman, but he never has. For the money he's being paid it would've just been dumb, especially with Pothier coming back to go all out for this guy when he's not that much better than Juice.

The East may come down to the Brodeur factor. If he stands on his head in April and May they skate with Lord Stanley. Theodore has a Vezina on his mantle. I believe he is going to come to play and these playoffs are going to be AWWWWWWWEEEEESSSSSSOME.

just a few things from GMGM:

The teams we were in negotiations with were looking invariably looking for our top prospects (Varlamov, Neuvirth, Alzner, Carlson...)

"No deal is better than a bad deal"

Only two defenseman on the market would have improved our team (Boumeester and Pronger) and they weren't moving or too expensive.

Derek Morris was never really a strong consideration.

Tarik reported we went after Pronger. Asking prices were too high.

Flyers nullify McLaren trade
Friday, 03.06.2009 / 6:21 PM / News
By NHL .com
The Philadelphia Flyers said Friday they have nullified the trade on March 4 with the San Jose Sharks in which they acquired defenseman Kyle McLaren in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft. McLaren did not pass his physical, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.

McLaren, a 31-year-old who has played more than 700 NHL games, was to be assigned to the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate.

McLaren has no goals, 6 assists and 17 penalty minutes in 17 games this season with San Jose's AHL affiliate, the Worcester Sharks. He sustained a hand injury in December.

"Kyle has been very professional about his situation this season," Sharks GM Doug Wilson said in a statement. "From the beginning of the year, we made a commitment to Kyle to find an opportunity for him to play in the National Hockey League. Unfortunately, this deal didn’t work out but Kyle will return to the organization and work towards the full recovery of his hand.

In 719 career NHL games with San Jose and the Boston Bruins over 12 seasons (1995-96 to 2007-08), the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder has 46 goals and 161 assists for 207 points and 671 penalty minutes. In 70 career playoff games, he has 1 goal and 13 assists for 14 points and 78 penalty minutes.
