I really think this guy has been flying under the radar, and he literally caught my attention as I had to catch the plexiglass that his dislodged absolutely pummeling that penguin player. He doesn't have a great +/-, but Jeff Schultz has a good one, so that throws that stat out the window. He is a big, tough defensemen, who positions himself well, and isn't afraid to rocket the puck at the net. I really like the guy and wondered if anyone felt the same way.

PS Jeff Schultz sucks

Our Defense for the Future:

Green-Mo
Jurcina-Alzner- this combo worked well I think. Alzner will only get better
Carlson-Tyler Sloan/Schultz

Jurcina really picked up his game when he was stuck on a line with Alzner, I thought.

He's been solid since that gaffe in the Habs game.

I like Jurcina, but he does have a propensity for making errant passes out of the zone.

Carlson-Tyler Sloan/SchultzI completely agree that Jurcina seems to have turned a corner and is playing great, physical D. He seems to thrive when playing alongside a quicker more athletic Dman, like Alzner, but has held his own when playing with Erskine. The only player that has a negative affect on his play is Schultz. Shocking! I hate you Jeff Schultz. However, he's a RFA. As are Morrisonn, Schultz, Lepisto, Kronwall, Collins and Pokulok. Sloan and Helmer are UFA's. As it stands our Dmen next year are

Green-Poti
Pothier-Erskine
Alzner-Carlson
Godfrey-McNeil
Dovgan

Obviously, we will retain a couple of those FA's, but the return of Pothier limits our cap flexibility. I'd like to see us retain Jurcina and add a top Dman(one who is known for his defense) to pair with Green on the top line. Considering we will probably carry 7, maybe 8 guys that fills out the D nicely. One problem it does present, however, is the lack of space for the younger prospects(Carlson/Godfrey). Of course, injuries will probably allow for some callups during the season, and I have always thought that is the best way to work in younger guys. My ideal D would look like this, keeping in mind that pairings and line # should be fluid:

Green-FA
Alzner-Jurcina
Poti-Erskine
Pothier

Shultz reminds me of that guy on the movie Mystery Alaska....the really big guy that plays like a pansy in the begining of the movie.

I wish someone would kill his dog so he would start hitting...the guy is huge...use your body.

I'm new to hockey...I just started watching last year....but from what I can tell, the Caps really need an enforcer next to green on the blue line....someone who's primary focus is on defense and roughing up the opponent.

Brashear is our overall enforcer and Bradley is our wannabe enforcer who takes on the smaller guys. I don't think having an enforcer on our first d-line is a good idea because that guy will take a lot of penalty minutes and miss valuable time in an effort to "protect" our team.

Maybe enforcer wasn't the correct term...I just mean someone who will get physical....someone who will clear the front of the next and put someone against the boards when they are behind the net. Not necessarily someone who will start fights and defend teammates.

I like Erskin a lot....he is a tough dude.

My sister loves Laich so I got his autograph on a hat and had Erskine sign a generic sheet of "caps" paper they had available. He didn't seem to mind, but I can tell you one thing, he is as angry as he appears. The best word to describe him is surly. I honestly got the impression he wanted to use the sharpie to stab people. I saw about 20 people get his autograph and he didn't say a single word to any of us. He's been playing significantly better this year, so perhaps he found a way to channel his anger.

I think Morrisonn gets overlooked too. The guy makes some bonehead moves, but he was being mentioned in all the potential deals that had the Caps getting Derek Morris, Bouwmeester, Pronger, Ect. so something has to be there. He's also really young. I wouldn't give up on the guy just yet

what you're looking for is a shut-down D. And I agree that is what we need. I thought Alzner played the part pretty well, but also had a few rookie mistakes thrown in.
