Phillips fired with Mets mired in last place

ESPN.com news services

The New York Mets have fired general manager Steve Phillips, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark has confirmed through sources.

The Mets have called a 4 p.m. ET news conference, but a spokesman would neither confirm nor deny Phillips' firing.

Assistant GM Jim Duquette would be named as interim GM, Stark has learned.

Phillips had as high a profile as his managers since taking over for Joe McIlvaine as GM on July 16, 1997. He often clashed with former manager Bobby Valentine, though it was owner Fred Wilpon who fired Valentine after the 2002 season. Valentine was replaced by Art Howe this past offseason.

Phillips was awarded a three-year contract worth $3 million, with an option for a fourth season, prior to the '02 season, but he also was rumored to be on the hot seat at the time of Valentine's ouster.

The Mets, whose payroll eclipsed the $100 million threshold this season, have done little winning despite adding the likes of Mo Vaughn, Robert Alomar, Tom Glavine, Roger Cedeno and Jeromy Burnitz through free agency and trades the last few seasons. New York finished last in the NL East (75-86) in 2002 and, at 28-35 through Wednesday's games, again are last in the division.

Mets are just like the NHL Rangers, a lot of big name older players that no longer carry their weight.

The Mets are the polar opposite of the Orioles, a team that spends ANY amount of money just to finish in last place

The main thing that scares me about the Orioles is the lack of talent in the minors.
If they had a few up and comers, it would be some glimmer of hope, but for the longest time, the minors have been very shallow of star potential talent. They seem to produce the serviceable mlb talent types, which is good, but the need a homegrown star to get some fan interest as well. Since Cal has left, there hasn't been much to be excited about.
