View Full Version : How Does It Feel to MEET a Redskin?
Thinking Skins
March-22nd-2009, 11:39 PM
I'm not sure if this is a "call out" thread or not, and if it is, I apologize.
I know I've read about people here who get to hang out with certain Redskins, and some get to actually interview the Redskins, but I'm just wondering what it feels like to be sitting there next to a Washington Redskins player? And if you've had a chance to meet one of your childhood heroes (Sunny, Joe T., Joe G., Art, Darrell, etc.) what was that like? And when I say "meet", I'm talking about the training camp experience too, but I really want to know how people contain themselves when they're told they're gonna be on the Redskins sideline taking photos or interviewing one of these players.

Attended 2004 training camp.
Spoke with L. Coles, C. Griffin (and got autographs)
Really enjoyed talking to Rashad Bauman- we talked about the weather at training camp not a word about football except a "good luck on the season" at the end.
The highlight was meeting Buges......the guy is so high energy and seemed more glad to see the fans and be at TC than anybody else there. It made the trip from the ES of Maryland to Ashburn worth it just to see and talk to Buges.
Of course my friend met Sean Taylor that day........I didn't.

Forgot about email......I emailed CP back when his site was up and he responded. That was pretty cool that either he or someone representing him responded.

Some people may not like this, but as much as I disagree with JLC, I once sent him an email and I was happy that he responded. Its one thing to comment on his articles and have him respond to that, but I sent him an actual message and was able to have a little converstaion with the dude. He's a decent guy.
But nah, I've never had a chance to 'meet' a player either. I've gotten a autographs though. The last one I got was JC in training camp in 2007. I remember running over a crowd of people to get him to sign my seat cushion. Now that thing's hanging on my wall.

also Dan Steinberg (DC Sports Bog) and Bram Weinstein (when he was here on 980/Redskins Radio) reply to emails pretty quick. I think both replied to my emails with 20 minutes after I sent mine.

I ice grilled Shawn Springs in the mall. He ice grilled me back.
In reality I saw him in the mall and I said to myself "Damn, that dude looks just like Wayne Brady and his girl is fine." As I tried to make out who it was, I had that look on my face like i was thinking hard, almost squinting. So it looked like I was mean mugging him hard. So he saw that, and ice grilled me right back. It wasnt until I passed him when I was like "Damn, thats Springs, I didnt mean to have a stare-down with him."

I haven't really gotten to "hang out" within one. I have stayed after the games to get autographs. I've chatted a little bit about the game with Marcus Washington, Joe Salavea(sp?), Chris Cooley, and James Thrash. Nothing to write home about. But for me, IT WAS PRETTY AWESOME!
I would love to go over "X's and O's" with some players though.

the Monarchs and Stan Gelbaugh for that championship. That plus the 'Skins dominance of the same year must have been kickass for you.
I liked what I saw of the WLAF and NFL Europe.
Back to the topic: If just seeing a player around somewhere randomly counts, well I don't recall ever seeing any 'Skins players but I did spot Gheorghe Muresan once in a store in Odenton, Maryland. Tall is a curiously underwhelming descriptor for the guy.

Working in the Tyson's mall I tend to see and meet a decent amount of them.
Once you get past the nostalgia stage you realize that most players are used to getting those "looks" and "I'm a huge fan" approaches. It's because of that most just give typical PR responses.
Overall I've found that Colt Brennan and Rocky Mac to be the most down to Earth that I've met.
Also the most "family oriented" guys that I've met would be the old guys like Mann and Monk, but also some others like Springs, Dockery and even Ramsey.
Most awkward meeting I've had was definitely Brandon Lloyd.
Those are the only ones I've met off the top of my head.

I had the opportunity to meet a few of them. Devin Thomas, Philip Daniels, D-Hall and Colt were all EXTREMELY Nice. Portis seemed nice too, but was mauled by people. Jason Taylor seemed like an arrogant pr!ck, and Cooley, although I love the guy, seemed a little arrogant himself.
EDIT: Oh yeah... and SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT. Flashy as they come, but still an incredibly nice guy. He has that Mr. Clean smile that sparkles. lol

Well the Redskins I met was at the Arizona game in 2007, first ever game too. I tried to met Jon Jansen but that dude is a true prick omg he dissed me. Ray Brown freaking dissed me man. I am not joking I was polite and stuff and he diss me. All I wanted was a picture with him. He said ok give me two mins with these fans and I said ok sure no problem. After he was done he looked at me and walked off. He looked directly at me man. I hate that jerk. I would never freaking diss anybody like that. LOL I find it funny but boy he was a jerk.

I've met a few players, and have had differing experiences each time. I guess my answer to the question is: "it varies". Some times its like wow, that was really cool and down to earth. And some times you realize that a guy is just an azzhat. I've met a player (HOF Redskin, who I won't name because I don't want to get bashed up for it), and he totally turned me off. Some times its cool, and some times its dissapointing. But its still better than not meeting a Redskin :)

Bowl America on Drainesville Rd? I saw Ladell Betts in there a couple months ago. Very approachable. Took pictures with us, and later "friended" us on Facebook. Great guy.
BTW, for any facebookers out there, Fred Smoot's pretty active and will 'friend' you if you send him a request. His pics and status updates are pretty funny.

Depended on my age, the player's status and our interaction. Played catch with Joey T. but back in the mid-70s, thrilling for a little boy but Joe was not yet the Joe we remember. I've worked with a couple who where on the SB teams but after the initial thrill, we just had a work relationship. Ran into Ken Harvey at the book store in Reston and at a hardware store where we were both doing regular stuff. Russ Grimm did some of his Christmas shopping in the mall I worked at when I was in college. Joe Gibbs and family (rarely saw Joe) went to the same church I did. I've rarely run into Redskins doing Redskin things.

My company hired Brad Johnson and Tim Brown for the 2001 Super Bowl in Tampa. I had the opportunity to hang out with Brad Johnson and his wife for an hour or so on SB Sunday. At the time, Johnson was a FA. He was still with the Skins, but would shortly sign with TB. We mainly talked about Tarpon fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Some folks asked Johnson whether he was going to re-sign with Washington and he was very evasive in his responses. I knew then that he wasn't staying in DC. It was good talking to Johnson, but T. Brown was much more interesting.
Back in 2001 my seat got selected during the Skins/Bears game and I won a trip for 2 to the next Skins game which was an away game in New Orleans. Won flight, tickets, and hotel for 2. Ended up giving it to my parents as a Christmas present since my Dad is a huge Skins fan and I already had plans for that weekend. They stayed at the team hotel. My Dad was in the hotel lobby when the team arrived. He got to ride up on the elevator with Marty and talk to Lavar for a few minutes. He said Lavar told him he had never been to New Orleans before and that he was pissed that the team wouldn't let him play in the game since he was recovering from a nagging injury. Gotta love that attitude by Lavar.

I've met Coach Gibbs twice....It was an unreal experience...It was better than expected. He had just goten off a plane and looked like he just woke up. He singed a poster for me, took a picture, and even got my address so he could send me an autographed book which arrived about a month later...I met Golston last year at the Coca Cola 600..Also very nice and took a picture with me......I guess you kinda expect them to be nice and do whatever you ask them to b/c we pour our hearts and souls into the team....but you know they get kinda tired of it at times....

I met CP at Disney's Wide World of Sports. I was working there at the time and they were filming "Battle of the Gridiron Stars" and CP had just finished the obstacle course, so I went over there and met him. Pretty cool guy. Not a Redskin, but I also meet Joe Jerivious (spelling ?) that night. Really cool guy, he was a free agent that year and I really wanted him to sign with the Redskins, but a few days later he was a brown. Oh well.

They put on their pants the same way I do. I really don't think it's all that amazing or incredible. They are just people.
I've met several skins out and about and its always nice to say hello and chat, but I've never had some awesome experience and gotten to party with them or anything like that.
In fact one time I saw CP at Tattoo in DC and he ignored ANY MAN that walked up to him and said hello. The women sat around begging for the one to be taken home that night. It was amusing , but I don't blame him for blowing off the guys. You should have seen the talent there that night, ha

I was in the same vicinity as Chris Samuels and Bruce Smith one night at SkyBar overlooking the Va Beach oceanfront. My friends were all pushing me to meet them, but i never want to bother them because they get approached all the time.
Anyway, they went up to them and told them I was a huge fan, so I walked over there and met them both and told Samuels good luck this season. He was big, but he had a small head.

I got to hang out in the players lot after the browns game last yr. and Shaun Suisham is the coolest guy ever, talked for awhile about bs. Phillip Daniels and Andre Carter were also great.
I hang out to get autographs after every game I go to (one game for the past three yrs)and M Washington is always the best for sticking around and signing stuff. For a coach Blache is the best with fans that I've met, although I wish I could have met Gibbs... guess I'll have to go watch some Nascar to fufill that one!

I have met a few skins players. I met Landry when he was in the mall that I work in doing an autograph signing. I got a picture with him and talked to him about jordans(i work at a finishline). I also met Colt after the first preseason game. I must say, that he is a very nice guy. He was the last out to the parking lot and about 40 people had stayed to try and get his autograph. He came out and security told him that he had to go which made most of the people waiting mad, so he went to his car put his bags up and came back and talked/signed stuff for every person out there waiting. Got him to sign a Dallas Sucks shirt(which he found funny).I also have been played xbox live with Horton and Kareem Moore. They are two down to earth funny guys.

Met a ton of guys over the years. I don't really count training camp because it's just such a mob scene that you can't judge someone by that though as an autograph seeker I get frustrated by that.
Nicest current players are probably Andre Carter, Renaldo Wynn (welcome back), Jason Campbell, Ledell Betts, Chris Horton and London Fletcher.
But my favorites of all time are Gary Clark, Jim Lachey and Marcus Washington. Just as nice as they come and love to talk football and tell stories
And of course my one encounter with Sean Taylor at the atuograph show in 2007 when I was expect a disinterested person and what I got was a joyous expect with Sean kidding with me about wearing a Riggins jersey and a high five.

It felt "fun" (for lack of a better word) to meet him in person. Not life altering, but definitely a high point of my "Redskins life".

I've had the chance to meet a lot of guys, and I actually got to cover as a member of the media; and had the chance to talk to a lot of guys, and even though thats a different animal in itself, I've never had a "bad experience", Portis always seems very to himself ,which isnt bad or rude, but doesnt really respond to many people...
But the one experience(where I met most of my guys) was before the Tampa game in 2005 (Allstot disaster) I had the chance to get those on the field passes before the game, I ran around like a kid in a candy store, and got to say hello to a bunch of guys and Portis & Moss autographed my pass.... but I was just standing there and over a ways was Sean Taylor... and like someone else posted, I expected him to be totally disinterested and not give anyone the time of day...and he was my favorite player back than as well, so I didnt really want to say hello, have him stone me and not like him for that.... however, my buddy had his jersey on and he looked over to us and we were just staring at him and walks up and goes "Hey whats up? I'm Sean", shook everyones hand, we talked for about 3 minutes or so, just asked us where we were from/talked about the U a little bit.... still really breaks my heart what happened there....what an experience..
Cooley, Marcus Washington, Samuels, Dockery (1st go round), Antwan Randal El, Sellers all were great... I mean I'm sure theres some complete pricks, but I have not run into any of them yet...
I mean, the Taylor experience was really cool, and a story I'll tell forever...but I was never really "star struck" by any of these guys. I dont know why, but I just felt like I was meeting someone for the first time. Its cool, though.

I rode the elevator with clinton portis in his first year as a redskin. My dad and I where staying at the same hotel the players where staying at for the game, it was the baltimore night game back in 04 i believe.
When I got in the elevator I was completely star-struck, and cp knew it too, and he looked at me and chuckled and said 'whats up'. Later in the ride he opened up the playbook he was holding and showed it to me and said, 'you this play, im going to run this tonight right past ray lewis'. We got off and he signed my room-key which I have since framed. It was awesome! :cool2:.
I also talked to lavar a little, b/c he was by himself with his gf, and I shook coach gibbs hand and said goodluck
That has to be the coolest thing that has happened to me with someone famous, let alone with the redskins.

I was one of the last passengers on a plane leaving Dulles (I was on the "bump" list and they held me back 'til the last minute) and Chip Lohmiller came out of the VIP lounge and boarded just before me. We were headed to - of all places - Minneapolis (which is where he's from). It was right after the 'skins had cut him, so I didn't want to bother him. When I caught up with my wife, I told her he was on the plane. She wanted his autograph; I didn't want to bother him, but during the flight, he came down the aisle to use the restroom, so I pointed him out to my wife, and on his return to his seat, she stopped him and asked for his autograph, which he was kind enough to give. I made sure (ahead of time) that she wished him good luck in finding another team, and she remembered. I think he caught on with New Orleans and/or St. Louis (it's been a while - so I can't remember), but didn't last long.
FYI, (for the younger generation, in case you haven't heard of him), Chip Lohmiller was a kicker for 'skins in the late '80's/early 90's. He knew how to tackle, too - kind of surprising for a kicker. We've not had a kicker (I'm talking accuracy and dependability) like him since then.

It is pretty cool...Had dinner with quite a few of the players after the Rams game. In the players lot they have an all you can eat BBQ buffet in their tent. I grabbed some grub and took a seat. Alot of the players were just hanging out with various family members just talking and eating. They had the 4pm game on the TV sets and the Cowboys were playing. All of them were especially disgusted watching them play and some defenders wanted to get a shot a Romo because he is a whiny punk...according to them. I sat with Daniels and Griff and their family. Fletch was one table over with Carter. Samuels was with his family in one corner. Monty had a huge batch of family who drive up for home games in a big old school conversion van.
I just chilled and talked football with Daniels and Griff. I think they thought I was a relative of somebody because I didn't ask for anything. For me just hanging out was cool for me. I see why the D had it together...those guys relate well and are of the same mold. The offensive guys kinda just did their own thing and just took off as soon as they got to the lot. I chatted with Kelly and I think he got a bum deal with that knee it sucks for him because the guy is smart and very personable. He likes how he lives in the sticks in VA because it can keep guys around home and to not be tempted to roll out into DC. He said he was not for the City life and liked the peace and quiet.
Overall it was great time and I just blended into the environment. The guys do B-day parties with the kids and support the others families with charitable events. It was nice being just a fly on the wall to just soak up the conversations.

I remember when I was a kid and got a chance to ask for DG's autograph at one training camp....not the best experience of my life.
I remember I used to carry a grudge with me against him because of that. But I've heard stories from others where they've seen him in a different setting and said he's a cool guy who signed autographs and took pictures.

I can't believe that I forgot this, but back in 1999 (early 2000), when the Super Bowl was at the Georgia Dome, I got to work for the NFL. I remember I got the chance to go to a few NFL parties and meet some people high up in the NFL. That was back when Casserly was my role model and I had dreams of becoming a GM the same way he did.

Last year I met Chris Samuels, Mike Sellers, and Stephon Heyer at Catch 31 in Va Beach. They were all extremely friendly. The same night John Eubanks and Carlos Rogers bought my girl and I two rounds of shots of Patron. Eubanks was probably the nicest out of all of them. I guess he was still wet behind the ears. Too bad he never made the squad later that year. I also met Gary Clark earlier in the day!

But as for Redskins I've met: Sean Taylor, Campbell, Landry, D Hall, Rogers, Randle El, Samuels, Portis, Moss, Colt, Carter, Sellers, COOOLLLLEEEYY, Smoot, Gregg Williams, Springs, Thrash, Pierce, Byner...... There were more but..... It was an awesome feeling, I know they are just people too but it is neat to meet these guys that you watch every Sunday play for your favorite team.

I've been lucky enough to interview most of the guys on the team over the last couple of seasons, but my wife hadn't ever met any of the players before San Francisco last year. She came to pick me up at the team hotel and when we met up in the lobby, there was Andre Carter with his wife and son. Carter is such a classy dude that he came over to say hi and when he met my wife, called his wife over to introduce the two ladies. My wife was a fan of Carter before, but now he's one of her favorites for sure. It only took a couple minutes of his time, but she'll remember it for the rest of her life. Like I said, Carter is a classy guy.

I have met several redskins, for my experience it depends on the surroundings I can say that I have met Lavar on various occasions while at TC and on actual game day and he was the most nice humble Redskin I ever met, I also met L. Coles while he was a redskin and all he was doing was signing Jet's merchandise so to hell with him, I also met ST and he was very humble but you could tell he was shy and wasn't too comfortable talking to fans at the time. I also met Pat Fisher and a few old school skins and they are pretty down to earth. Marcus Washington was stuck up, the kicker from the SB days is an arrogant butthole I forget his name. I have met Smoot several times the first time he was stuck up, the second and third time I saw him in Reston he was cool...
But for real the best skin I have met was and is Santana Moss, dude is cool, country and crunk.....lol he is just a nice dude and I hope to run into him again.......

I met a few of the players back in the day and it's always kinda surreal to match a guy to what was usually a black & white picture from a program. Still, it was cool that they still seemed like normal people.
It's different today with color photos and video on demand and streaming but in the 70's and 80's, it was totally different. Sonny Jurgensen and those guys from the late 60's and early 70's seemed larger than life and meeting them was always a big deal.....and they didn't charge us a dime!!! As I got older and had the chance to chat them up, I realized they weren't that different from me.
Nowadays, meeting an NFL player is no big deal to me other than, perhaps, a photo op and a chance to gain a little insight. For the most part, they're always gracious because they know who allows them to make the money and live the lifestyle they do.

First and only time i met a redskin was Stephen Heyer in his rookie year right after preseason. I was extremely drunk and was apparently very annoying :( Not very smart on my part. I've regretted acting like a jerk off ever since.

On my only trip tp DC, I got to meet Chris Cooley at Tyson Corner and he's really down to earth. Really cool guy... type a person you can just hang out and have a great time. On that same trip back in '07, I also met Jon Jansen before the AZ Cards game at FedEx and he wasn't too happy as he was on IR.
The person I'd really like to meet before I die is Coach Gibbs.

What did Landry have to say about that shirt, Hokie?
He didn't have much to say about it but a woman that was with him was pretty excited and was like "oh my god its an Area 51 shirt". I am so mad at myself for not getting a pic with Sean that day.....

Moss was a great guy when I met him, he signed this plaque I made for a friend and he said " man this thing is cool, where did you find it?" I told him I made it and he was like man that's awesome. I want to give him the Sean Taylor one I made next time I see him.

I got to meet Marcus Washington at Dulles a few years ago picking up my wife he was really cool. Jim Snowden came to my wedding and did some work with him when I was layed off over the summer. He is an old timer played under George Allen and was the first African American to ever graduate from Notre Dame.

I have meet plenty of redskins and other pro's and let me tell you, most of them are great one on one. I have been to their houses and dinners they really do love the fans. Most of them hate the media but they all love the fans. I cant really put into words what its like but i do wish everyone got a chance to see them as the people they are off the field. When you show them love and respect they give it right back.

I had a great experience in 2001. Eddie Mason's wife was selling raffle tickets to "A Dinner with the Redskins" event to benefit their Faith Foundation and to buy food baskets around Thanksgiving.
Well, I actually won and got to have dinner at Maggiano's in Tyson's Corner with several Redskins including Eddie Mason, Champ Bailey, Lavar Arrington, Shawn Barber, and Kevin Mitchell. They were all extremely nice. I know that Lavar catches a lot of flak around here but he was exceptionally nice and seemed very genuine. Kevin Mitchell was also particularly nice.
I haven't had a opportunity to meet any current players except Ladell Betts. He was very nice as well.

I played racquetball with Joey T in Leesburg just after the announcement was made that Joe Gibbs was returning. We had good games and we chatted at least 20 minutes after as we were cooling down. I confess, I thought he was arrogant and stuck on himself until I actually met him. Gave me a whole new perspective.
A couple years later, I met Santana, Clinton and Dock at the Leesburg bowling lanes. They were having a good time bowling and just chillin just before preseason that year and were very open to the fans that were bugging them during their fun time together.
Hail!

Let's see...I've met Sellers, Smoot, JC, Suisham, Yoder, Randy Thomas, Stephon Heyer, Dexter Manley, Gary Clark and Blache. I met these folks at the Beach Blitz and they were all very nice. I also met some of the other players that aren't w/the team anymore like Jimoh(who was super nice). It's great to meet them..but in reality they are just people like the rest of us. I was a little thrilled at meeting Dexter Manley...afterall I grew up watching him play and it was quite an experience and he's quite the guy..funny and still in pretty good shape.

I'm real jealous of everybody talkin about how they got to meet Gary Clark. He seems like a cool guy to hang out with.

I met him at Maccados restaurant in Radford where I worked during college (93ish). He's from Pulasky county, and would come in there periodically with some buddies. He never shy'd away from talking to people, and on a couple occasions bought rounds of jaegar shots for some tables I was waiting on. Good tipper too.
I gave him some flack about leaving the skins and signing with Miami as a FA (few remember this), and he was always a good sport about it, and frankly seemed to regret it.
Edit: He went from the skins to the Cardinals, and THEN to Maimi in 95. So it must've been circa 95 when I met him (I worked there from 90 - 96)
