View Full Version : Making Preseason Count

What if preseason games counted? No, not each one, but cumulatively. What if at the end of preseason if you had a winning preseason record you got an extra win or an extra loss? Or maybe just consider the first halves? If you have a winning record by halftime of all your preseason games you would earn an additional win and start the season 1-0.

I keep hearing how the NFL is debating on extending the season to 17 or 18 games and I often hear how the preseason is too long and meaningless. What's crazier though is that teams charge the same ticket prices for preseason as they do for regular season. Personally, I think a preseason game should start out at half the price of its regular season peer. If we made the preseason count, then the games would be more meaningful, and more interesting both to the paying public and to the players some of whom ho hum it through the Summer.

You would get your 17 game schedule without changing anything. I kind of like it... even though I think it's a stupid idea.

If that was the case, starters would play the majority of the time and you'd get little to no looks at your young guys, which is a big aspect of preseason.

Sorry Burgold, but no :)

That's why I had the winning the first half idea as a correlary. Treat the first half as the game that counts towards that cummulative win and the second as a training grounds.

... but I did warn you it was a really stupid idea :silly:

Well its creative - and your right it is stupid :)

Just cut preseason by one game.

The last game is pretty meaningless anyway with starters held out and almost all roster spots decided. If you want to give your young 3rd string QB (I'm thinking of you Colt) or rookies who are on the bubble extra "live" reps organise a scrimmage or two more during camp or play a rookie game before preseason even starts.

i have another stupid idea...lets make a trade for Jay Cutler by mortgaging a QB who finally is playing in the same system for the 2nd year in a row and throwing in standout players and/or high round draft picks.

My knees hurt enough from praying for no injuries for just one quarter.

Not necessarily. It's more where someone drops the old: "You should probably be more descriptive with your thread title" age old saying :)

lol. I don't go by that credo. I firmly believe that all threads should have thought. I don't believe all reactions should be threads, but any musing goes in my book.

The ratings are making me laugh by the way. I wonder if I had entitled this thread differently if the idea would have stood a better chance? I do think it's a fun idea.

Who knows. But you definitely would have been more in tune with "teh rules" if you had titled it differently. "A really stupid idea" has multiple possibilities when opening the thread. Besides that, I can't tell you how many threads a day I read that could have been titled "A really stupid idea". :)

This one isn't really "stupid". It's more of a... uhm... "Huh?".

Give yourself a bit more credit and change the name! :)

Can't argue that. I just thought it would be a funny title. Changed.

If you want an extra game, cut one preseason game and add a regular season game. If you give an exhibition game ANY value, then it's not going to serve it's purpose as an exhibition game. The point of the preseason is to practice things and evaluate younger players. Once you make them matter, that goes away.

I'd rather they shorten preseason and add one or two regular season games to be honest.

Well, can we at least make preseason tickets half price then? :)

I think that the Redskins NEED to take pre season more seriously. Clinton Portis. He is the one person that annoys me the most on the team. I have a love hate relationship with him. Great player, terrible practice habits. I believe that he single handedly pulled the Skins down this past year against the Panthers in pre-season. Before the game he came out and said that he'll play if asked but doesn't care about pre-season, etc etc. you all remember the quotes.

In that game, the offense looked HORRIBLE from the opening snap. I believe that the other players look up to Portis as a leader. Portis has claimed to be a leader. That said, the other players most likely thought, "if this guy doesn't care, why should I"?

And the results spoke for themselves.

If Portis kept his mouth shut and played hard, I believe others on the team would have played hard as well.

I don't care about the results of Pre season, but it would be nice to have a better attitude about it from one of the so called leaders of the team especially one that everyone looks up to.

JC needs to play the whole first half if he is going to be our starter. Moss and ARE should start the first few series, and Kelly and Thomas can wrap things up for the rest of the first half.

Colt should play a quarter and a half and get reps in with Thomas and Kelly.

Yeah I would say make the preseason one game shorter and add that game to the regular season...I'll tell you if you play the hall of fame game that is just too long of a preseason...
