(CBS) In today's "Healthwatch," smoking Smarties - is this trend just eye candy or a health risk to your child?

It's a fad growing at schools across the country. Due in large part to its popularity on video sites like YouTube. Smoking Smarties gives children the appearance of a smoker's exhale. The videos posted on YouTube even provide viewers with a how-to.

With this fad come health risks. And because of them, some school administrators are taking action

No pun intended, right? ;)

Yeah, I don't think any type of candy that encourages smoking is good, even if it is unintentional.

What happened to simply exhaling outside when it's cold? :silly:

My message to kids: It's not cool to smoke, and it's even less cool to pretend to smoke with Smarties, which is total irony in itself.

This is the same thing kids used to do with candy cigarettes. I don't see any harm in it. I find it funnier there are kids doing youtube tutorials on it.

agreed. No harm no foul.

It's just like when we were kids and used to have those candy cigarettes that you could literally smoke and exhale. lol Those were awesome. And FTR, those are the only cigarettes I've ever smoked in my life.

the Devil's lettuce OTOH..................;)

I knew plenty of people who smoked candy cigarettes that never smoked. I wonder how many parents are really outraged.

Smarties = the new Camel Joe!!!

I'm a smoker but this is dumb. I don't think there is much harm in it(smokin smarties), but really... is this what kids do now? Wow, are we regressing as a whole?

Also the title should read "Smoking Smarties" has parents smoking mad. instead of fuming!

:DDude should just fire up a dried out banana peel in a foil pipe, it is probably a hell of a lot better for him.

They aren't inhaling sugar. They're just pulling the dust into their mouths and blowing it out. Smoking the candy cigs was the same thing: roll the smokes in between your hands, take a pull, blow out the "smoke". No inhaling.

I've never seen one's that you actually inhale? I thought they are just filled with baby powder and you blow out? I would think this is different. They are inhaling sugar, sugar dust, whatever. Either way, anything traveling through your lungs besides air is probably not good for the good ole lungs.

Dude, did you watch the video? They aren't inhaling it at all. They're smoking it like you smoke a cigar. They aren't breathing in sugar dust.

My goodness whats next, cant bring mentos to school cuz you could drop it in cola and make a fountain which could maybe in a million years put someones eye out. Kids these days cant have any fun, too bad. Bring back realistic looking toy guns, candy cigs and camouflage, time to play nam.

agreed. Parents are way too overprotective now-a-days. I truly feel sorry for the current generation of kids growing up. All they have is their video games and tv. No more playing outside til the sun goes down, having your parents mad as hell at you when you come in late, but you don't care because you know they'll get over it, and because you are home safe. No more kids riding bikes, building makeshift bike ramps and jumping off them. No more treehouses, football in the backyard, basketball til the sun goes down, walking down the railroad tracks throwing rocks at the passing trains, or even hiding in the woods throwing pebbles at passing cars. I could go on with all the fun crazy stuff I did as a kid. I don't see anymore of that stuff at all. Kids are trapped. No wonder kids are so obese now a days. They don't get out!

It is cool to smoke, at least it makes you look cool. No need to lie to kids to keep them from smoking by telling them it's not cool. My message to kids is that looking cool by smoking is not worth the risk to their health.

I think federal legislation is required. All the greedy candy executives need to be punished. Their salaries must be capped and we must assist the poor, addicted children with stimulus payments.

What an idiot kid.
I showed the video to my 12 year old and asked if he'd ever heard of this. He hadn't, and watching the kid 'smoke' his smarties only made him laugh at how much of a dumbass the kid looked like.
Nothing to worry about unless you're one of those parents who never happens to notice what your kid is doing.

I guess you never smoked candy cigarettes as a kid either.......

it's basically the same exact thing. Except they're doing it with smarties since they took the candy cigs that you could actually exhale off the shelves.

Every few months the media pops up with another story about the new "threat" to our kids and everyone runs around screaming.

I can totally picture that kid 10 years from now in a dorm room telling guys how to make a bong out of a empty toilet paper roll and some tin foil.
