View Full Version : Should the NFL add more games?

At the owner's meetings this week the NFL big-wigs are throwing around the idea of adding 1-2 more games to the NFL schedule. I love the idea of having more football but the NFL season is near perfect right now. Every game matters, its not like basketball where you can take a game off every now and then. And isn't this gonna make players want more money for the extra games? Thoughts??

Hell no. The season is long enough as it is. Players get worn down over the course of the season, and adding 2 more games that actually count will just hurt the quality of football we see in the playoffs.

This is just a gimmick by owners and the NFL to make more money in TV revenue/ ticket sales, etc by throwing in more games. Just say no!

okay, I finally got through it. My answer is no. I like 16 regular season games. If anything, there should be one or two preseason games eliminated. Four is too much IMO. I think it should be just three, and possibly only two.

edit: and a couple teams play five preseason games, the ones that play in the HOF game. That is way too many, it's absurd.

I say yes. 2 more games would be nice. Convert 1 of the preseason games to a regular game. Add another game to the end. Also add another bye week for each team to help them rest & heal. Add 3 or 4 to the active roster limit. Give us another month of NFL please.

I'd like to go to 18, but drop 2 preseason games. If those games aren't dropped, then keep it at 16. I also agree with adding to the roster limit.

They should definitely add 2 more games to the reg. season and subtract 2 from the preseason. We all can't wait for the season to start soon enough anyway. Meaningful games in August is music to my ears.

Very nice, I like the extra bye week.

I think it's too many regular games and I think cutting the preseason in half will do the following:

1) It won't give teams enough time to properly evaluate draft choices or undrafted free agents or others vying to make the final roster.

or

2) Teams will use both preseason games solely to evaluate those bubble players, and as a result the starters will not get enough work in the preseason, causing those first few weeks of the season to become a proverbial "feeling out process" full of mistakes and penalties.

and definitely

3)It will very much hinder newly hired head coaches as they will have less time to both teach and put into practice a playbook.

I like more games counting, but it's not worth it to the quality of the game in my opinion. I'd say leave it be.

Add one or 2 games isn't really going to increase injuries. All of sudden, all players in week 17 and 18 would get injured.

I voted for a 17 game season. I read one suggestion was to have 17 neutral site games. Or to have one conference have 9 home games one year and the other conference have 9 home games the next year.

I'd go with 3 preseason games and a 17 game season over 19 weeks. You would now have 2 byes. I would give the 8 division winners that 9th home game. The other 9 games can be at neutral sites, not just overseas but in several places in the U.S.

.....This is just a gimmick by owners and the NFL to make more money in TV revenue/ ticket sales.....Or maybe the Owners are positioning themselves for the Labor negotiations? :shhh:

Any added games would be added to the end of the season. THE NFL doesn't want to start their regular season LABOR DAY weekend like they used to.

Pushing the superbowl deeper into February- the usual sweeps month would be appealing to the networks.

I'd love to see 2-3 preseason games dropped in favor of more intersquad scrimmages and go with a 17 week season. I hate 8-8 records. Either you finish with a winning record or you don't unless you tie.

I'd love 20 games total, 2 preseason, 18 regular season

that'd be perfection. 9 home games... yes please

The 20 game formula won't be dropped. Used to be 6 preseason 14 reg. Then 4 and 16. I don't know about 2 and 18. I kind of like it the way it is, but they could drop 2 preseason games altogether. But owners won't do that. They like the pocket change they get from the preseason games.

I'm for keep 16, drop 1 pre-season game. That week in-between should be the HOF Inductions.

Drop 2 preseason games and add 2 regular season games. I can't stand how pointlessly long preseason football is.

I say yes but let them have two bye weeks.

Add 1 game (17 total) with 2 bye weeks and one less preseason game.

We need 3 preseason games, because it truly does require that amount of games to get teams ready. From a playbook standpoint, a roster evaluation standpoint, and for new coaches to get in rythm with there team.

The bye weeks (IMO) should be the same for all teams. Maybe split the season into 3 portions with the two bye weeks seperating them. The 17th game (not necessarily at the end) should be at neutral site for all teams. That site should be at a city that does not have an NFL team. LA, overseas, or any place the NFL has considered expanding to. This would allow for expanding the market and increase of audience, yet keeping competition fair.

At least thats my 2 cents.

;6258287']I say yes but let them have two bye weeks.

Dropping 1 preseason game and adding an additional bye week (perhaps a league-wide bye before the final month a the season) would actually be a pretty good idea. I would support that, having already voted no in this poll.

I like this.

I figure we are going to 18 games eventually. They first do 17 games for 2011 and then a few years down road, they will go to 18 games.

Just what will be that 17th game though? Or even 18th game, if they go to 18 games?

Only if the NFL expands its roster from 53 to 60 or something like that. Also the owners will have to be flexible with the CBA coming up. The NFL and its owners are about making more money and that's fine but player safety and finances should be considered as well. :helmet:
