Any opinions on why the Orioles go on losing streaks each time they get to 500? Same thing happened all of last year and has happened several times this year.

Personally, I just think they are overmatched at times. They are having a great season compared to the stature of players on the roster.

I would have to agree with codeorama. They get overmatched at times, and they don't have the caliber of players to make a run at the Wild Card.

That is true...they just need to be more complete. I mean they had a 22 game run where they crushed the ball and went 11-11. A good team that is complete takes that power surge and goes 18-4 or something...

Something just doesn't connect with them. When they hit the bullpen struggles, when they pitch the get 4 hits in a game. The players they have now are all good role players. They need a couple of studs to carry the load. If Gibbons, Roberts, Matos, etc were there secondary players, I'd be pretty confident!

It's karma, man.

That and the voodoo doll of Peter Angelos that I do my Washington Senators Insane Death Stomp Romp on every time they break above .500.

If and when DC gets a team, I'll stop doing it.

And then the O's can break .500 all they want.

But not 'til then.

Sorry.

As much as I hate the Yankees, they have an owner who wants to win. It's got to start at the top. Until that happens just keep praying for baseball in D.C.

If DC gets yet another baseball team, that'll spell bad karma for the rest of the teams already in the city...how many chances does DC get? But DC won't get a team for a few more years - at least.

To the topic question - They just aren't that good. There are some decent pieces and now they have a gm (or 2) that isn't senile. I don't see the Birds being above .500 untill 2005. By then they'll have gotten rid of all the bad contracts (including Belle and Erickson - who aren't even playing, Fordyce, cordova and Segui) and establshed some continuity on the major level and minors.

This next month will be huge for the O's.

They have some trade bait that contenders will want. Will they do better then Sydiot's trade purge of 2000?

"How many chances does DC get"?

You're kidding, right Ummagumma? Please tell me that before you wrote that, you had some sense of what Washington looked like - demographically and economically - back in 1970 ... as opposed to, you know ... now.

Please tell me that. :)

I love going to the Orioles games, Camden Yards is by far the nicest stadium that I have been to and I've been to quite a few... BUT, I would like to see DC or Northern Va get a team. That would be cool. Even if DC or N Va gets a team, I would still keep up the the O's as well. Baseball is weird for me. I always follow the O's, but I like other players as well and will follow them too..

Yours is the only rational explanation.:notworthy
They don't go 5 over 500 and then lose 10. They don't go on extended losing streaks when way under 500. They always have their extended losing streaks right after they get to 500.

Being overmatched doesn't explain it, otherwise they'd go well over 500 on occasion before dropping to mediocrity. IT IS DEFINITELY THE OM HEX.

Yeah, they just can't seem to break the .500 barrier:gus: Om's voodoo curs aside, I think they need a big bat, (Miguel Tejada is a FA after this season and the A's said they'll probably let him go and havign a big bat from the SS position would be sweeeeeet, Vlad the Imapler is a FA after 2003, and there are a few more big name FA's but I can't think of any right now), and they need a true #1 starter. Ponson is a nice pitcher, but seems to always flame out....damn Angelos for not showing Mussina the money. :box:

I agree. Those are the two free agents that would be a perfect fit for the O's. They been way under a payroll that Angelos can afford for 2 or 3 years now so it's time to buy the two or three players that can lead the pretty good role players we have.
