REDSKINS HOST THREE DIVISIONAL OPPONENTS IN PRIMETIME AT FEDEXFIELD;

OPEN 2009 ON ROAD AT NEW YORK GIANTS;

HOME OPENER IN WEEK 2 AGAINST RAMS


LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced their schedule today, which is highlighted by primetime matchups at FedExField against all three NFC East opponents.


The Redskins will commence their 78th season against their longest-running rival, the New York Giants, on Sunday, Sept. 13. Kickoff for the final scheduled game between the clubs at Giants Stadium is set for 4:15 p.m. ET on FOX-TV.


“It’s a competitive schedule right from the start as we play an NFC East game against the defending division champion,” Head Coach Jim Zorn said. “As we look at each division opponent, they have all improved through free agency and the potential of the draft. Many of our divisional games are on national television. With the competitiveness of the NFC East, the NFL wants to give its fans the opportunity to see this division play on a national platform. All the teams in the NFC East have a strong national following and it is evident during both our home and away games with the great support we receive from our Redskins fans.”


In Week 2, Washington will host the St. Louis Rams in the 2009 home opener at FedExField on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. ET. It will be the first of four games in a five-week span that Washington plays an opponent with a first-year head coach as they alternate away and home games at Detroit (9/27), vs. Tampa Bay (10/4), at Carolina (10/11) and vs. Kansas City (10/18).


“Though we are facing some of the same teams we played last year, those teams have a different look with new head coaches, coordinators and players they acquired this past offseason,” Zorn said.


In Week 7, the Redskins will make their first of two ESPN Monday Night Football appearances when the Philadelphia Eagles come to the nation’s capital on Oct. 26. That game is also the first of three scheduled home primetime games against NFC East rivals. The Redskins will play the Giants on Monday night at FedExField, in Week 15 (12/21), which will be followed by a visit from Dallas on Sunday, Dec. 27, in a game slated for 8:20 p.m. on NBC-TV.


“When coaches look at the NFL schedule, it is a matter of being willing to accept the challenges of the opponents on your schedule,” Zorn said. “In every game and opponent, we will face tremendous athletes and complex schemes, which is what makes the NFL exciting and challenging.”


Following the contest against the Eagles in Week 7, the Redskins will take their bye week. They will return to action with a trip to Atlanta in Week 9, followed by a home game against Denver. In Weeks 11 and 12 the Redskins will have back-to-back road games at Dallas (11/22) and Philadelphia (11/29) for the second consecutive season.

Washington will then open the month of December by hosting New Orleans in Week 13 (12/6), before heading west to take on Oakland (12/13). Following the pair of primetime home games against the Giants and Cowboys, the Redskins will conclude their 2009 regular season at San Diego on Jan. 3, 2010.


The combined record of the Redskins’ 13 opponents was 95-112-1 in 2008. Five of the teams qualified for the playoffs. Washington’s home opponents were 22-37-1 on the road in 2008, while its road opponents went 41-23 at home last season.


The Redskins also announced that their preseason game against Pittsburgh at FedExField is set for Saturday, Aug. 22, at 7:30 p.m. and their preseason game against Jacksonville will be on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m.

OTHER NOTES ON THE REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE:

at New York Giants (9/13)

· It is the second straight year the NFC East foes have squared off in Week 1, marking the first time the Redskins have played the same opponent in back-to-back openers since splitting with Dallas in 1992 and 1993. The last time the Redskins traveled to face the same opponent in consecutive season openers was when they played at Pittsburgh in 1956 and 1957.


· The Redskins and Giants last met in back-to-back season openers in 1988, at New York, and 1989 at Washington. The Redskins and Giants have played 152 times in the regular season, dating back to 1932, making them each other’s most common opponent.


vs. St. Louis (9/20)

· St. Louis will come to Washington for the second straight season as the teams also met in Week 6 of 2008. It will also mark the fourth time in five seasons that the Redskins and Rams meet in the regular season.


at Detroit (9/27)

· The Redskins will visit the Motor City for the second consecutive season for the first time since 1999 and 2000. Washington prevailed 25-17 on Oct. 26 of last year, their third straight victory in the series.


vs. Tampa Bay (10/4)

· After four consecutive trips to Tampa Bay for the Redskins from 2005-07, including a Wild Card Playoff game on Jan. 7, 2006, the Buccaneers will come to FedExField for the first time since the 2004 season opener.


at Carolina (10/11)

· The Redskins are 7-1 all-time in the regular season against the Panthers with the lone loss coming in their last trip to Carolina, on Nov. 16, 2003. Washington won the last regular season meeting, at home, on Nov. 26, 2006.


vs. Kansas City (10/18)

· The Redskins and Chiefs will play for the first time since Oct. 16, 2005 and the first time at FedExField since Sept. 30, 2001. The Redskins only victory over Kansas City came on Sept. 18, 1983. In fact, the Chiefs’ 6-1 record against Washington is the best in terms of winning percentage (.857) of any of the NFL’s 31 teams versus the Redskins.


at Atlanta (11/8)

· The Redskins will make their first trip to Atlanta since a 33-31 victory on Sept. 14, 2003. The teams last met on Dec. 3, 2006 in Washington.


vs. Denver (11/15)

· The Redskins and Broncos will match up for the first time since 2005 and the first time in Washington since Week 4 of 1998.


vs. New Orleans (12/6)

· This will mark the second straight season the Saints will visit FedExField, following the Redskins’ 29-24 victory in their home opener on Sept. 14, 2008.


at Oakland (12/13)

· Washington will visit the Oakland Coliseum for the first time since Nov. 29, 1998, a game in which it prevailed, 29-19. The teams have played only one time since then, on Nov. 20, 2005 at FedExField. The Redskins will make two trips to the state of California in the same season for the first time since playing at San Francisco in Week 2 of the 1990 regular season and in a Divisional Playoff Game on Jan. 12, 1991. Washington has not played two regular season games in California since the 1983 campaign when they visited San Diego in Week 9 and the Los Angeles Rams in Week 12.


vs. New York Giants (12/21)

· This game will mark the fourth consecutive season in which the Redskins and Giants have played in a primetime matchup.


at San Diego (1/3/10)

· This will be the first matchup at Qualcomm Stadium since the 2001 season opener and the first between these clubs since a San Diego overtime victory on Nov. 27, 2005. Coincidentally, that was also the last time the Redskins faced one of their former head coaches (Marty Schottenheimer). It was the second straight week in which that was the case as they took on Norv Turner’s Raiders on Nov. 20, 2005.

San Diego, we lost in overtime off of a huge LT run. We're a much better defense now.

I think the biggest factor in the schedule is how many teams we face after their bye week. 2 years ago we faced 3 teams coming off a bye week and lost all 3 games.

EDIT: We only face 1 team this year coming off a bye (Carolina in week 5) and ours is in week 8 so pretty good IMO.

At Oakland and at San Diego at the end is crap

Few things I notice.

We play AT both Oakland AND San Diego. I thought that wasn't supposed to happen for divisions who play against the West. Similar to the NFC West with San Francisco & Seattle. Both us and Philly have to travel to those cities. The nice thing for the 'Skins is that the games around those trips are at home. The Phillies travel to Chicago and to our field following their long trip.

Secondly, we finish the season playing 4/7 games against our division. The last two are on national TV and at home, that's nice. 2 of those other 3 games are on the west coast, which sucks.

I like playing teams with first year head coaches early in the season in St. Louis, Detroit, Tampa Bay, and Kansas City.

We have another bye week after a nationally televised game, like last week. And it's at home against another Pennsylvania team.

For me, at least TWO games on TV here (MNF - Tuesday lunchtime here) and unless it's changed, a third (SNF Wk16 v Dallas - Monday lunchtime here).

Depending on what feed we get, we might get another game or two - hopefully - otherwise, it's NFL.com's GameCentre at 3am Monday mornings.

I think they put us against Philly on a Monday because we have proven capable of beating them in prime time in much closer games than we have the other two if we exclude 2006. The Giants have been killing us but for two games, one on Christmas of 2005 curtesy of Patrick Ramsey and in 2007 curtesy of crazy winds and Todd Collins. We are 5-3 with Dallas since '05 and Jerry would prefer not to be embarassed before a national audience again.

As for our last games against Oakland and Norv Turner, I never got more drunk during a football game in my life and I'm glad I don't really remember much more than the nice $15 Phillips Seafood sampler I bought on the club level. Sadly, I do remember thinking that was the end of the season, having just been to the 36-35 Bucs game the week before.

None of these games are going to be guaranteed with most of the bad teams under new coaches and our own status in question but we stand a good chance of having a competitive year so I won't complain.

I do however, hate Monday night and primetime games that aren't in early September or late December because it's next to impossible for a college student to fly in or out on weekdays without missing a lot of class. I think my only Monday nighter was the '06 opener that I also wish I could have blacked out drunk during in retrospect.

That indeed is "1 way" to look at it. The other? Is as of late, the Skins RUIN special days in Cowboys history. So they'd probably rather not have the viewing public witness such a feat of "America's team" getting trounced! Like the 35-7 game with the playoffs on the line, the Brunell to Moss miracles on "Triplets honor night" or the Marion, Witten attempt at "1000 yrd seasons" the last head-to-head meeting in their old rat trap, all recently. Cowboys vs Indians is still a real rivalry, but the media LOVES the Cowboys. They love the G-men too. So REGARDLESS who wins that Jones dome spectacular.....the MEDIA still wins! Not true if Skins win that grand opening, IN PRIMETIME!

and the super bowl champs have the easiest schedule, go figure. oh well the skins never get a break. we have been a 500 ball club and yet we usually wind up with one of most difficult scedules every year.also heard that the giant are supposed to get braylon edwards from the browns. we need him and i am fed up with giants getting all the breaks and these players just falling into their hands.it seems that way at least. good by burress, oh well guess what. b edwards just so happens to be available.we get haynesworth and they get canty and the dt from seattle.i have to face the fact they are a far superior team as far as front office prowess goes we have no money and all these holes to fill. as good as haynesworth is was it really the best move to tie up all your money in one player and then fish for left overs to fill the remaining holes. this is not the way you put a superbowl contender together.i don't begrudge someone making mistakes, but i expect them to learn from them and snyder keeps doing the same thing over and over again and still doesn't get it.i fear that the good graces of the fans are wearing thin. i know mine are, we need to get a oline that can take over a game and get touchdowns in the goalline area and first downs to run out the clock. we need a wr to help moss and randle el isn't him.and the rookies would have to make a major step up to do it.possible but unlikely,b edwards is there to be had but the giants are probably going to get him.we need a de that can help carter, we need a couple of starter capable lb's as well as a new center another guard and a rt.a big young brusier of a back would be nice as well.and last but not least a qb to back up campbell and challange colt and campbell. collins is a 3mil mistake.theres not much left so trading is the only way to get it taken care of.question is do you want to go to the superbowl. then make the moves. i know that the picks are precious but he spent all that money and now have soo many holes and too little picks to fill them nows not the time to get skiddish.be smart but check out the possiblities and get your needs filled. the rt is a position that could wait one more year if needed.but the inside of the oline cannot. we need a quicker stronger bigger center and a guard capable of moving the meat.you people are well aware of these things so i am sorry for ranting.just fed up with the giants getting their needs met and ours always needing to be.

Reason Super Bowl champs have an easy schedule is they play in a week division. We play in a division where everyone is 8-8 or better

Prime time games haven't been so bad for the skins, so long as they are on the road. But it's a different story at FedEx and i can't figure out why. Think we're something like 1-7 at FedEx on MNF since 1997 (or maybe it's worse?).

The only primetime game that isn't guranteed is the Cowboys game on Sunday Night. They can't change the MNF games against the Eagles and Giants.

I'm really mad that all three home games against NFC East teams, the ones I want to see the most, are in prime time. I don't live in the area and it's impossible to make it to those games without taking the next morning off work. I won't be surprised if all three of those games are repeats of the fiasco that was the Steelers game on Monday night last season since a lot of people will want to avoid the rush-hour traffic on the beltway and the drunken crowds and just put their tickets on ebay for highest bidder.

2) I do not like the two trips to the west coast, all at the end of the season, wrapped around our always tough NFC East showdown games.
3) I do not like the Prime Time games (MNF and SNF); we have played so poorly in these nationally televised games. I prefer, plain, old, boring, vanilla 1:00 games.
4) The Detoit game scares me; I foresee a 'stinkeroo' on our part. Lions end their consecutive game losing streak, and all Skins fans commit harri-kari!
