With the Steelers dumping veteran linebacker Larry Foote, the uncharacteristically cap-strapped defending Super Bowl champs will clear $2.885 million in 2009 salary space.
Foote has started every game for five straight years. In 2008, he had his lowest output of that half-decade run, with only 63 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Lawrence Timmons, a 2007 first-round pick, will be expected to earn and keep one of the starting jobs at inside linebacker. To date, Timmons has been overshadowed by 2007 second-rounder LaMarr Woodley, who has become an impact player on the outside.
And it’s a bit surprising that the Steelers are making the move now, two months after the start of the 2009 league year. Cutting Foote in February would have given him a fair chance to participate in the free-agent feeding frenzy.
We also wonder whether the locker room will support the sudden departure of Foote, and whether there might be something more to the story that would make the guys left behind more inclined to accept the move.
This is an OLB that we can acquire that actually makes sense.

Just saw that. I think I'd be happy with that. but LBs always seem to look god in black and gold.

For some reason Foote's numbers have been declining since 05.

By the way, I don't think this is happening. The only source so far seems to be Florio and I can't imagine the Steelers even being aware of his existence.
Dan Rooney gets all the news he needs from The Saturday Evening Post.

Foote was a defensive leader for the steelers. That's a shocker to tell you the truth.
Now, if Marcus Washington is healthy than I'd rather have Washington just because he knows the system and I still think he has ability if he stays healthy. The more time goes by the more I'm feeling that the redskins will sign Marcus Washington back at vet Minimum.
IMO a healthy Marcus Washington > Foote

This has been rumored for a few weeks now. See one of my earlier posts.

As bad as I feel about writing this, I think I'd rather have Foote than Washington...I think there is a BIG 3 years difference in their age.

How does and ILB from a 3-4 translate to a 4-3 linebacker? Would he be a good fit and a better OLB in a 4-3?

Just because he played inside in the 3-4 doesn't mean he can't play outside, but I'd trust the coaches to know whether he fits in our system or not. if he does sign him if not then see what else we can do.

don't know if ilb in the 3-4 translates to sam in the 4-3? sure it can be done, but do his skills translate? i do know that other than a down year last season, he's a tacklin fool...

Steelers Will Keep Foote For The Next Week
Posted by Mike Florio on April 28, 2009, 3:07 p.m.
In his Tuesday comments to the Detroit News, linebacker Larry Foote said that the Steelers tried to trade him before deciding to cut him.
It appears that those efforts might be ongoing.
Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette confirms our report (thanks, Ed — you are a true gentleman, despite that French-sounding surname), but Bouchette writes that the Steelers will keep him on the roster through the coming weekend, during which a mandatory minicamp will be held.
Our guess is that the Steelers are still hoping to get a phone call from a team that might want to trade for Foote, and that with so many minicamps coming up this weekend, the Steelers might be thinking that a market for Foote could emerge quickly if a linebacker on another team suffers a serious injury during the coming surge of non-contact (eyeroll) helmets-and-underwear practices.
It’s also safe to assume that the Steelers dangled Foote during draft weekend, and that they likewise found no takers.
They might find a taker for Foote as quickly as the Fins did last summer for defensive end Jason Taylor, when a blown Achilles’ tendon in D.C. instantly became the second-round draft pick with which the Fins finagled Pat White.

Foote would be a great option. Too bad he wants to go to the Lions...

I say get him it can't hurt. We can only get better at that spot. I mean we already have the guys we have.

The only way we could get him is to give up a draft pick for him at this point. Footes on the record as being the first and only player in league history to say he wants to play in Detroit and mean it. He wants to be a Lion, let them have him. I want to keep all of our draft picks

Steeler linebackers never seem to do that well elsewhere. They're kind of like Denver runningbacks.

Read the title. LARRY FOOTE RELEASED. I sure hope we don't give up a draft pick for a LB who's a free agent right now. Idiot.

Yea I think we should pick up Laboy as a SAM LB he has good size and decent speed and he is fairly young at 27 also he will come cheap.

I think he meant that, if Pittsburgh does not release him until after the weekend, we could trade a pick to Pittsburgh to prevent him from going to DET as a free agent. Kinda like what we did with Erasmus James.
