http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/apr/29/daniels-ok-being-backup/

Dan Snyder was just another wealthy Washington Redskins fan and Barack Obama was a freshman state senator in Illinois when Phillip Daniels last came off the bench in an NFL game. That was in December 1997.

So it would be natural for the veteran defensive end to be upset that the Redskins likely made him a backup by drafting Brian Orakpo, the nation's top defensive lineman, with the 13th pick in last weekend's NFL Draft.

On the contrary. Daniels, who turned 36 last month before re-signing with Washington, encouraged the Redskins to choose Orakpo, and he phoned the former Texas All-American not long after they became teammates Saturday.

What a great resigning and a definition of a TEAM PLAYER

Cue the "well, he better be. He's old, injury prone, and can't rush the passer so he should shut his mouth!" crap spewed by the big men behind their keyboards, lol.

I agree though. Daniels is going to help Orakpo reach his potential far more quickly than he would if Daniels wasn't here. Orakpo should watch and learn very carefully. He's got some knowledge to gain from some great sources here.

Classy guy...good person to have on the team.

Let's hope this team can win Daniels a ring before he hangs them up!

A real class act, and a great addition for the locker room. He could have a real impact on Orakpo's career with his transition to the NFL and his new found checkbook. Daniels is all about winning, not being "the man"--somewhat of a dying breed.

He's been in the game a while. It'll be good to have a class act like him mentoring BO

Are we going to have to call Orakpo 'BO' for the rest of his career?

Daniels was really effective for us in '05. Good for him, taking the high road and helping the young fella along.

I so like Daniels. Great team player.

I don't think he'll be the backup. My bet is he'll start and play on 1st and 2nd down.
The DE spot will be a rotation between Carter, Daniels, Wynn and Orkapo.
Carter will likely see most of the action and the other three will rotate. I think Blache will have packages where they have Orkapo, carter, griff, wilson, and Haynesworth all rushing the QB.

Daniels is a monster. Great having him back... If we had him last year instead of Dance Machine Taylor, we would have made the playoffs and been able to draft an OL in the 2nd round this year...

I'm personally really happy we brought back Philip and Reynaldo. Both are classy veterans who have been in the league for a long time, and can add a good amount of leadership to our lockerroom. With the two of them mentoring our young DEs in Orakpo, Wilson, and Jackson, I feel pretty confident in this group of DEs. :)

The strength and lifting programs Daniels does will certainly be a help. Orakpo said he wants to improve at stopping the run, so Daniels would be a damn good player to talk to IMO.

Daniels is a guy you love having on your team. You know what he gives you. He's strong as an ox, will stop the run, and will be great in the lockerroom/on the practice field. If I was him, I wouldnt be worried about being a "backup" either. I'm sure he will get plenty of time in rotation and on obvious rushing downs. That's a solid contribution for a 36-year-old.

i think you will see daniels play great when he subs in, he'll be fresh, plus he was looking to have a great season last year before the injury

Orakpo can definitely pick Daniels' brain on stopping the run technique wise.

I kind of figured Daniels would be splitting time when we signed Wynn back. Now there are three of them. Its going to be good because coming off the injury and his age he won't have the pressure of anchoring that side of the line for the entire game. We now have capable guys to help him out.

Anyone want to venture a guess as to which DE's make the roster come opening day? Can we accomodate Carter, Orakpo, Daniels, Wynn, Jackson, and Wilson on the roster?

Daniels is a good guy, and he still has some left in the tank. I just hope he has fully recovered from his injury. If he is healthy, and our back-up, that is NOT a bad thing at all.

That's really cool. I really like Daniels and I'm glad we brought him back. This just makes me happier. He's still pretty impressive against the run and a great veteran leader/workout kinda guy. That seems to be the exact mold of Orakpo and it sounds like Orakpo is a great fit on our team both on and off the field. I'm excited.

If he turns into an elite pass rusher we sure can call him BO for Box Office.

Will be interesting to see Orakpo after a year with Daniels. He already lifts big numbers. I would love to see him at 285. Daniels is vocal when not injured. I'm hoping that is another area that Daniels benefits the development of Orakpo by the example he sets.

I liked having Daniels back before we drafted Orakpo. Can't wait to see him playing DT on a 3rd and long with Haynesworth at LDE and Orakpo moving around to create mismatches (or Haynesworth doing that works for me too). The other side to that is Daniels watching on as Wilson lines up at SAM with Orakpo/Griffen/Haynesworth/Carter with their hands down. The combinations at DL we can now put out depending on situation are awesome from GL to 3rd and 50. Daniels is going to be important in setting the right tone. It seams he already started :D

We had 6 DEs on the opening day roster last year:

Taylor - Carter
Wilson - Evans
James - Jackson (inactive)

We had 4 DTs:

Griffin - Golston
Montgomery - Alexander

So I could see us going with:

DE
Orakpo - Carter
Daniels - Wynn
Wilson - Jackson (inactive)

DT
Haynesworth - Griffin
Golston - Montgomery

I would love to see Wilson or Jackson earn the right to move ahead of the old dogs, but we'll see.

Orakpo may be at SLB on 1st and 2nd down, with Daniels or Wynn starting at LDE, if things go well at LB for Rak.

How classless is the front office in the way they have treated Daniels. How dare they draft someone with less experience to compete. They even traded for a guy last year at his position. He should demand a trade. How is he not "shocked" with the pick?

What would he do, demand a trade? :silly:

I like Daniels and didn't mind him starting this coming year.

I was going to respond but i'm going to try to end the streak of every thread being about the QB situation.

I'm glad Phillip is back on the team. Him and Wynn are true Redskins.:point2sky

A true asset to have a guy like big Phil on your team at this stage in his career. A locker room presence, mentor the younger guys, and give you some stability, familiarity and experience. Glad he's back.

Daniels knows he wont be a backup in Blanche's scheme. Blanche rotates his guys according to packages I can really see a situation where the front four will be Haynesworth, Carter,Orakpo, and Daniels at some point. The ones that should be worried are Lorenzo Alexander, Montgomery and Golston

Why would Golston be worried. He may be our best defensive tackle after Haynesworth. Do you know that he led the Skins defensive linemen in tackles last year? Yes, I know, its hard to believe, especially if you don't really follow the game, and if you just read what other people write. But its true. Golston had a heck of a year, tackled everybody in sight and was a HUGE reason why the Skins defense ranked 4th. He took a lot of pressure off of Rocky and Fletcher so they could both get double digit sacks.

No my son, Golston has nothing to worry about. Its the Redskins who need to worry, because he is a free agent after this year and they better think about LOCKING HIM UP. Not only that, but Griffin needs to compete with Golston for the starting job opposite Fat Albert.

P.S. as I have been saying, Alexander cannot make the team unless the Skins would consider him for a Center position. There is no room for him on defense. If they put him there, it is a foregone conclusion he is getting cut. But I like the guy and he is versatile and he knows the offensive plays, why not give him a shot at gaining 10 pounds and playing him at backup to Rabach. I know thats what I would do.

I don't think Golston OR Monty have much to worry about.

Both those guys are rising studs for the Skins, Golston especially.
