Of course O-Linemen with bad backs are a risk no matter what the weight. All reports are he looks good in workouts but I have serious reservations about him being a top reserve let alone a potential 16 game starter. Backs never return to pre-injury health, they just feel better.

It's a difference between hope and expectations. I have high hopes for all the UDFA OL and especially Mike WIlliams. Face it. It's a great story. The guy is financially secure (from his contract before he got hurt) and is playing for the love of the game (and vet minimum). Still a great story. I'd have high hopes for the drafted OL if we had any. I even have high hopes for the Dockery addition, Heyer, Jansen and Rinehart.
But my expectations are nil. The 2-6 we ended up with last season were directly attributable to the OLine, according to the year end brainstorming session the FO (scouts and Vinny) and the coaches had. Regardless, they again chose to look outside the draft for OLine. Their decision. They are "football people" and I am not. I hope the Skins don't repeat the 2-6 twice this season and end up 4 - 12. I expect the new additions to add nothing to the OLine. My hope is the opposite.

No ****, when you see Samuels (who is a big dude) he looks like a TE compared to Williams.
I think a lot of people are getting way too amped over this, both ways. It is unlikely that he starts or even makes the roster at this point but what the hell, it's a roll of the dice with very little on the line.
And quite often back/knee/joint injury can be caused by the weight alone, the stress of carrying too much can stretch ligaments and tendons past the point of functionality, while losing the weight allows them to return to their normal range of movement so ya never know, the guy's career might be revivified, stranger things have happened.

Even if he's not fat and has a relatively low body fat to muscle ratio for someone that size, it still is probably too much for him to have the necessary stamina and durability that can play every down in a game for a whole season. He'll probably always be a big guy even for a OT, but he should bring his weight down to extend his playing time.
Most coaches say that rookies who are a little out of shape don't need to do anything special to get into NFL shape since the practices, OTAs and minicamps will do it alone. Assuming Williams stays around through preseason, all the regular goings on will take care of most of the weight issue. He just can't cheat and has to work hard.

Honestly though if you look at his bone structure he has the frame to support this weight. huge shoulders, big hips etc... i have a new found hope for this guy, hell i loved him in the draft the back issues is my concern. from what i remember he also has a great personality.

Biggest guy I ever met in person was Joe Jacoby, who came into the Jumbo Foods (:evilg:) where I was working in 1986 (Annandale off Columbia Pike). 6'7/310 - man, he blocked out the flourescents big time! The guy in this photo doesn't look 410. He might be holding his gut in a bit... but... I would say he is at best 10-20 pounds from his playing weight.
Matter of fact, he looks like he can play right now. He's what... 6-5, 6-6.. 385....390 ...wooooah.....
We see now why the Skins passed on the O-Line. They floated this smokescreen that the guy was 450... So, teams would think they were going OL .... so the teams ahead of them would take all the OL's..... and not RAK... This guy was 4th overall in 2005 for crying out load.... and is now far, far removed from any injuries he had...

No ****, when you see Samuels (who is a big dude) he looks like a TE compared to Williams.
I think a lot of people are getting way too amped over this, both ways. It is unlikely that he starts or even makes the roster at this point but what the hell, it's a roll of the dice with very little on the line.
And quite often back/knee/joint injury can be caused by the weight alone, the stress of carrying too much can stretch ligaments and tendons past the point of functionality, while losing the weight allows them to return to their normal range of movement so ya never know, the guy's career might be revivified, stranger things have happened.
your sig is really funny, thanks for the laugh!

That guy is huge and could very well be evry bit of 410 lbs. But what it looks like is that it's a manageable weight. he doesn't look all fat and floppy, he looks pretty solid to be as big as he is. It doesn't even look like he has much fat in his mid section. And if he's 410 and can hold his gut in to the point that it looks almost flat he's pretty damn talented.

Just Kidding. He doesn't look as bad as we might have guessed. At least if he can't pass block, he should be able to run block. It's been a while since we could run to either side.
To move 375lb's 30 inches into the air is a lot of power.
Williams college bench press/squat: 435/500 Orakpo 515/600+. I'd like to see this matchup in training camp if Williams is panning out.

Wouldn't be too excited about his size and being a "monster." Unless he can move his feet, every speed rusher he faces will be licking their chops. Plus, as others have said, the back issue is not going away. Speaking of which, Thomas could have similar issues given he played through the pain and perhaps caused long term damage that the offseason surgery could not repair.

The Ravens killed us in the fourth quarter with their three-tackle run formation. Maybe Zorn has stolen the idea for our late-game strategy as well: Samuels, Jansen and Williams all on the field at the same time, just burying the defense, while Portis grinds out the clock?

If he gets anywhere near 340 pounds and under the tutelage of Buges we should have a great source of depth at Tackle. and goalline/ short yardage packages will be interesting.
NavyDave,
You may say I'm crazy for saying this (and you're probably right ;)) but I don't think he needs to lose 70 additional pounds to play right tackle.
If BIG MIKE looks this solid at 410 I think he has the frame and build to be a road grading beast at 365-375. This guy is a genetic marvel. At 410 he looks like a typical 320 pound player.
