The New York Rangers and Washington Capitals are closing in on a deal that would send Jaromir Jagr, the highest paid forward in the National Hockey League, to the Rangers sources have told FOXSports.com.
The deal is not yet completed as there are salary considerations, some of them major, still to be worked out, but according to sources, the framework of the deal as it now stands would send Jagr to New York for forwards Petr Nedved, Jamie Lundmark and Matthew Barnaby.
Nedved is a veteran center who, when on his game, is a solid scorer and playmaker. Lundmark was a former first round draft pick who has yet to reach his true potential. Barnaby is a known pest around the NHL, an agitator most teams love to have and hate to play against.
Jagr has been the source of trade rumors for weeks, many of them involving Eric Lindros, a player the Capitals don’t really want. He’s been among the top scoring forwards in the NHL for nearly all of his years with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but slipped dramatically during his two years in Washington.
Jagr makes some $11 million per season, a contact that hasn’t translated into sold seats at the MCI center in Washington. The Capitals are looking to get out from under that contract and the Rangers are one of the few teams with the money and interest to make it happen.
Jagr has had off-ice problems in recent seasons the biggest of which were tax problems with the internal revenue service (since settled) and some legal gambling debts.
