View Full Version : Horribly boring draft

The combination of ESPN instead of TNT, tons of weird foreign names, and a surprising dearth of trades, made this draft a dud.
As I recall, the NBA draft made great TV in years past. This one had no intrigue outside of the top 3 picks, which were set in stone a month ago anyway.
Give me the NFL draft any day. The influx of foreigners is ruining the NBA's entertainment value.

I don't so much think it's the influx of foreigners ruining the game. After all, I will pay good money to see Nowitzki or Peja play. I think it's the fact that the NBA has become a developmental leauge that has hurt it more than anything. The reason we have never heard of any of these guys is because these guys have never done anything of note on the court to begin with. Instead of being able to contribute right away, you have to give a rookie "three to four years" before they even have a prayer of making a difference on a team. NBA basketball is becoming very watered down and we are seeing the effects of that.

By allowing teens to jump to the NBA, we've a) made it a developmental league as Golgo notes b) just about ruined college basketball, one of the great sports and c) made the draft much less enjoyable because outside of Lebron, you don't know much about the teens and can't figure out how they're going to do vs. adult men.
If they'd impose an age limit, we'd all win. But most restraints on occupation are legally doomed.

As long as Stern gets the players association to agree then it woudn't be a problem. Even Lebron said after he was drafted he would go with whatever Stern wants to make the league better.

If they would just mandate 20 years old as the minimum age to enter the draft, it would help the game of basketball SO much. Both college and pro ball would be much less watered-down. I don't fault the players for wanting the big paycheck right out of high school. If I were in their shoes I would do the same thing. I fault the teams for picking these guys instead of guys who are more ready to play right now.
