Wow. Look carefully at that girl at the 1:00 mark.
She seemed familiar, but it took me a few seconds to figure out who she is.
Anyone else figure it out?

ahh, well he should have been more accurate about the minute mark, because they don't actually mention her being retarded until 1:07.
I stopped watching a few seconds after the 1:00, then kept replaying the 1:00 scene, and saw no clue she was retarded.

Yet, they don't hesitate it to use it as an insult for someone who's not "retarded".....a little double-standard there.

for taking things too literally all the time
well when it comes to numbers, which is somewhat of an exact science, it's kind of important (and easy) to be literal.
i'd think you'd understand more than anyone here, about that, being a school teacher

Well not just because they say "retarded."
They are also taking advantage of the "retarded" girl by sticking her on a wild uncontrolled horse in order to win a race.
"Whoops, she got thrown and hit her head on a rock. Good thing she didn't have much of a mind to lose." haw haw It's a pretty awful storyline for a show like Father Murphy, that was supposed to be inspiring.

No they just say she's the only one who can ride him....maybe the horse is controlled around her so she is the only one that's able to calm him down and ride him

I'm not an "exact" kind of teacher. And I don't teach math. I teach literature, which is more "figurative". There are many answers to one problem. Be creative and open your mind.

I think it was meant as "look what the supposedly 'retarded' girl can do that nobody else can"...win the race, save the day, tame the horse, etc. lol

May-28th-2009, 06:09 AM
So what do you call retarded people now? Wouldn't that word after use for a couple years be the same?
And the show itself was inspirational as it was the girl that had a feeling for the horse that it recognized was the only one that could ride/win with it.

there might be a lawsuit, but i doubt they'd actually win. a bit insensitive by today's standards though.

Originally, 'retarded' was the p-c term which replaced 'stupid', 'imbecile', etc. It's still medically accurate as far as I know. I don't think anyone would get sued for using 'retarded' correctly in a commercial today.
