I just saw the new X-Files movie on the on-demand feature from my cable company. I was bored and figured it might be worth a laugh. I really disliked the later episodes of the X-Files show and I thought the first movie was absurdly stupid. Aliens running around everywhere.
But when I finished watching the newest X-Files movie I was pleasantly surprised how entertained I was, and without hearing aliens mentioned once. I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller.
Now after my long premise...
Which movies have surprised you in either a positive or negative way?

I could not believe the ending to "THE MIST"
I was like WTF!!! It has got to be the most twisted and screwed up ending to any movie EVER!!
I felt sick to my stomach and had this feeling of disgust afterwards...

Donnie Darko also surprised me as well ...I didn't expect it to be bad, but I definitely wasn't expecting it to hit me like it did. I couldn't stop thinking about it the rest of the night lol...
And Frailty surprised me at how much I liked it. I'm not a Matthew McConaughey fan at all, so I was thinking I'd be turning the movie off 10 minutes into it...instead I couldn't stop watching it.

Batman Begins
I had VERY low expectations and avoided seeing it for nearly two years...didn't see it until it was on dvd for long time. As we all know the last couple Batmans sucked hard.
Needless to say, I was pleaseantly surprised. It turned out to be a good, solid movie.

The Hangover. I was expecting to barely laugh at all. It was one of the funniest movies that I have seen in a long time.
Transformers...I was expecting it to follow the Autobots more than the people, I was expecting to be able to see the transformations...I thought it was terrible. The one that comes out this week will not be seen until it is on cable.

Watchmen. I'd never read the comic, and the previews didn't look interesting. Some friends invited me to see it, and I figured "eh, I don't get out much these days, so why the heck not".
Ended up being one of the best movies I'd ever seen. And the best comic book/superhero movie for sure. Bought the graphic novel immediately afterwards. Terrific story.

"Office space"...I had no interest in seeing it and I thought the commercials looked awful. Then about 2 years ago I was forced to watch it. Litteraly I was forced to watch it because the batteries in the remote died and I had just undergone ankle reconstruction so I couldn't get up and change the channel. So I watched it and I loved it...I hadn't laughed like that in years...I highly recommend it.

didn't think much of "Grandma's Boy" when I first rented it, now it is one of my favourite comedy's.
"Primal Fear", with Richard Gere & Ed Norton had one of the best endings ever.
I usually don't like Michael Caine or Demi Moore, but I liked the movie "Flawless."
"Outside Providence" is one of the most under rated comedy's out there, the previews looked like crap, but the film was great.

The New Star Trek. I was surprised by the twisting of the history of the crew and the destruction of Vulcan. Now Kirk and Spock can never have the Ponfarr death match.

Spoiler ninja text (just to be safe):
When the jet engine fell into Donnie's room, a tangent universe was created that pushed time and space off its normal, correct path...and apparently tangent universes are highly unstable and collapse in on themselves within a short time (in this case, in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds lol). Grandma Death had also gone through the same thing Donnie was gong through now...that's why she wrote the book "Philosophy Of Time Travel", as a guide to anyone in the future who might end up in that same predicament. Donnie followed what the book said as well as what Frank told him to do, and put it all together at the very end. The jet engine goes through the portal a 2nd time (the movie hints at Donnie actually making this happen somehow), which rewinds "time" and puts the tangent universe back on its original path at the moment it went off track: which is in the moments right before the jet engine originally crashed into Donnie's bedroom. This time, though, Donnie stays in his bed and chooses to accept his fate of dying (he thought it was meant to be, as well as he now believed in God and thus did not fear death or fear beling alone).

I have 5 "sleeper" films:
Sleepers - Kevin Bacon, Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt

What dreams may come - Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr.
The Salton Sea - Val Kilmer
Tombstone - Kilmer, Kurt Russell
Sleepers and Heat are both epic.

A sleeper movie for me was Galaxy Quest, with Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shalhoub.
It walked a fine line between poking gentle fun at - and being an homage to - the Star Trek genre and its fans. It had a good mix of comedy and adventure. I highly recommend it as a rental if you haven't seen it, even if you're not a sci-fi or Star Trek fan.

I have learned to not get my hopes too high for movies. I am a big Braveheart fan, and people were talking about how good Gladiator was even hearing it was better than Braveheart. IMO Gladiator wasn't near Braveheart and the high expectations ruined the movie for me.

No mention of The Crying Game?
I think Stand By Me surprised me. I went to watch it in the theater with my girlfriend of the time not knowing anything about it, and in the first few moments thought "I've seen this movie before"; which of course was impossible because it had just come out. Finally, I realized it was the moview of Stephen King's novella "The Body" which I had read not too long before. They did an excellent job in that movie of matching the story in the book.

Great comic relief from Rockwell and Shaloub and an excellent "spoof" film. My two have already been mentioned, In Bruges and The Big Lebowski. I thought the ads for In Bruges didn't do it justice and made it seem like a quirky action film, but it was much more. Highly recommend it. I saw The Big Lebowski in theaters because my friend wanted to go, but he usually picks the worst films. One that really surprised me was Ghostbusters. Going in, all I knew was that all my friends were talking about how many SNL people were in it. I'd never watched SNL (intentionally), and I'd heard all of this enthusiasm before, about Animal House. (Which stank.)
I expected hokey special effects, and such intellectual humor as a food fight. But it was a really, really, good movie.
----------
A more recent one was Little Shop of Horrors. I went to go see it because a friend of mine had just come home for the summer from college. I'd seen, in some science fiction magazines, articles about some new movie, which mostly involved photos of something that looked like a watermelon with lips. Skip that article, next page.
We were a tiny bet late arriving. Walked in in the middle of the first musical number. My only comment during the movie was to ask my friend if this movie used to be a play, because there were a lot of little touches in the film (like the way the sets were under-decorated, and the way the actors over acted) which weren't appropriate for a movie. They were acting more like they were on a stage.
I thanked the guy when we left for taking me to that movie. I thought it was really well done, one of the most enjoyable films I've ever seen. And I also mentioned to him that if he had told me that it was a musical, set in the 50s, about a talking, man-eating plant from Outer Space, that he couldn't have dragged me into the thing.

To add to my own thread...
The biggest cinema dissappointment I've ever had was when I went to see the movie Troy. The first teaser was epic. I had read a lot about the Trojan war in the Illiad and touched on the subject in a couple of college courses. I was pumped.
With each trailer it just looked more and more epic. I bought advanced tickets over the net for me and a couple friends. They were going to pay me back after the movie.
It's been a few years since then... they still haven't paid me back. I don't blame them.
Biggest cinema let-down ever.

Gran Torino. I didn't think it would be anything worth watching but a friend suggested it so I rented it. GREAT movie IMO.

Requiem For A Dream.
Yes.
Somebody also said "City of God" on the first page. I give that pick a huge thumbs up. It's probably top 10 for me. Great movie.

I've been gone for awhile, so I'll throw my choice into the mix before reading:
Derailed (2005 - Jennifer Aniston, Clive Owen)
Was expecting a low-rent thriller - actually got good acting and a pretty awesome twist.
Now I'll go back and read the posts.... :)

The Girl Next Door
Si, senorita, I agree - funny, sexy and entertaining :) (and a nice part for Paul Dano)
Grandma's Boy
"Adios, turdnuggets"
I was excited to watch No Country for Old Men last night. And Im still sitting here thinking- Huh?
Sooo over-rated. "There Will Be Blood" was ten times better, IMO.
"Primal Fear", with Richard Gere & Ed Norton had one of the best endings ever.
One of my favorite "twist" movies - he's so awesome. ;)
"Outside Providence" is one of the most under rated comedy's out there, the previews looked like crap, but the film was great.
Hahaha - when the Dean reads Drugs's letter out loud :hysterical:
I hate Tim Burton movies, but I got stuck watching Big Fish on a flight to Hawaii, and it was really, really good.
I didn't really care for it the first time, but watched it on TV (with commercials and everything) a few months ago and absolutely loved it. (Definitely cried at the end)
I really liked Click, and definitely didn't expect much out of it. Very touching, with great acting.
Great acting? By whom? I have no problem with the movie - I liked it, it was okay... but... great acting???

-TowelHead (one of the weirdest movies ever)
-Vicky Christina Barcelona
Watched it cause my girl forced me too. BUT both were very good movies.

Blood Diamond surprised me. Caught in late night one time on HBO. Great flick with some really good acting by DiCaprio.
Stay. A weird flick with a good twist at the end. Ewan McGregor is in it and that's the only reason I decided to watch it.
Sling Blade originally caught me way off guard. I didn't know anything at all about it going in. I didn't know what the movie was about and I didn't know who Billy Bob Thornton was. Great movie and it's still a lot of fun to imitate Carl.

I'd heard all of this enthusiasm before, about Animal House. (Which stank.)
I've got to agree with this. Lots of hype over the years and it was pretty boring.

Forgot to mention...
The first Pirates of the Caribbean.
When all of us heard that they were making a movie based on a so/so ride at Disney....how many of us groaned?
Who knew that Johnny Depp would channel Keith Richards and actually make the movie fun to watch?

Crimson Tide. I only went to see it because my brother was going to see Power Rangers and I had no desire to see that and didn't really care to see "Crimson Tide" either. Well 2 hours later I left the theater saying it was my favorite movie of all time and still is

I had never heard of Green Street Hooligans when I saw it. It was a really good movie.
Saw was a movie that I thought I was going to really like, but it was just kind of blah. I didn't hate it, but I left the theater a little underwhelmed

The Usual Suspects - absolutely awesome. Saw Seven shortly after and having watched the usual suspects before it, gave Kevin Spacey that much more legitimacy as the villian.

I can see the analogy. But I loved that ride! One of the "must ride" rides at Disney every visit.
Speaking of Disney, the Lion King was pretty unspectacular, while Aladdin was the funniest Disney movie ever made.

Just watched slumdog millionaire and I found I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I guess I had a preconceived notion on its theme and was dead wrong.
just goes to show that you cant judge a book by its cover.
this seems to be the consensus for those who didn't really want to give it a chance at first

Yep, Watchmen was ****ing awesome.

I also gotta say that Sunshine, Lock Stock and Two Smoking barrels, snatch, Sleepers, Mystic River, and i'll post when i think of more.
all these movies are great, but i never heard of them until i watched them and they were all amazing. Guy Ritchie is a British genius.

I thought Sandler did a great job, as well as Kate Beckinsale and the smaller roles. Ted Danson was a bit much, as was Christopher Walken (what else is new), but the main roles were well-cast.

Finally saw the fourth Indiana Jones film last night...wasn't expecting a classic like Raiders, but it still surprised me just how God awful the whole thing was. Easily the worst of the four films...actually makes Temple of Doom look epic in comparison.
I agree. I was so disappointed & I was even EXPECTING it to suck & it defeated those expectations. It sucked so badly, I can't even describe how bad it was. My 5 year old nephew even said it sucked...& he's not old enough to know what sucks & what doesn't (except the Cowboys. He knows full well that they suck & that they suck bad! lol)
Burn After Reading. I was very surprised at how much I like that movie. I generally don't like anything that the Coen Bros. have done, but that was a great movie.
Also, Grandma's Boy was surprisingly hilarious. Most of Sandler's stuff is funny, but this was on a whole different level. Very, VERY funny.

I watched "Balls of Fury" one night on Demand just because it was short and I figured it wouldn't require much thought. I laughed the whole time and ended up loving it.

In 1999 I walked into a movie theater sin expectio. The movie was something called, "The Matrix". I had not had any expectations of this movie, perhaps lower expectations due to the involvement of one Keannu Reeves.
My reaction after watching ... "whoa!".

Ehh... It was a pretty popular movie. Certainly not something I would consider obscure.
EDIT: I think both the movie and Norton were nominated for Oscars. (I could be wrong though)
