Are you serious?

Yep. I got into them when the original Matrix came out. I bought the sound track and Du Hast blew my mind.

Been listening to them ever since. Even went to one of their shows when they toured the states back in 2001 (at Nation in DC). Still have the ticket stub :D.

I think Reise Reise is their finest album. It sounds epic.

My favorite all time song is Bück Dich just because of the lyrics but Keine Lust was my original favorite. Mutter is the best album IMO. I wanna go to a show soooo bad!

I posted this in another forum:

for metal fans looking for some good stuff, check out my list (note that they may not all suite your taste, but they are varied styles of good metal)

1. Dream Evil
2. Edguy
3. Dragonforce
4. Rhapsody of Fire
5. Axenstar

Honorable Mention
Heavenly (they would be top 5, but they only have 4 albums, the last two of which are the ones I listen to)

Dream Evil- The Book of Heavy Metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-pN8qAiZhQ) - They have a wide range of sounds they go for, so if that song isn't your taste, look up some of their other stuff.

Edguy- Down to the Devil (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YTiXYbgHPU) --They also have a varied repertoire of songs (through 13 albums, you'd expect some evolution to their sound). A lot of their older stuff is more popular amongst the metal community, but Hellfire Club is possibly the best album ever.

Dragonforce- My Spirit Will Go On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTQBHnsnP6k&feature=related) -- at this point you probably know enough about them to know if you like them or not.

Rhapsody of Fire- Triumph or Agony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqNMbn4i8Bg)-- This band is the epitome of Symphonic Metal. This particular song is one of their more Symphony-heavy songs, complete with a 70-piece Symphony. Other songs of theirs are much more to a power-metal style. Interesting thing about this band is that all of their albums are a part of a two-saga story, The Emerald Sword Saga and The Dark Secret Saga.

Axenstar- The Final Requiem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbYaBGeC_0A)-- This band is fast and light. Sound upbeat and positive (even though some times the lyrics of the songs tell another story).

Heavenly- Virus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6ZJP1QyeBo) -- This band has really made an impression on me. As I said, I only listen to their last two albums, but they are an awesome two albums. Can't wait until they come out with another one.

Excepting Porcupine Tree, Jesu, and a handful of other melodic/drone metal bands, I can't stand metal as a whole, so I don't join into a lot of ES musical discussions. However, I'd say this is broad enough for me. :D

Here's my perennial top 10:

1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. U2
4. Pink Floyd
5. Beck
6. David Bowie
7. Radiohead
8. Steely Dan
9. The Kinks
10. Blur

And here are some artists that I've grown to love over the past year, and may find their way into the perennial top 10 at some point:

Neil Young
The Byrds
Big Star
Jimi Hendrix
Wilco
Bob Dylan
Joni Mitchell

I will forever maintain that The Who's performances during their heyday (1965-1973) are enough to earn them the title of Greatest Live Band Ever. I can't get into their albums quite as much though...I love The Who Sell Out, Who's Next, and Quadrophenia, but their all-time best album as far as I'm concerned is Live At Leeds. The version of A Quick One on there is simply phenomenal. The Rock N' Roll Circus version kicks ass as well.

Actually "Live at Leeds" is considered by many to be THE best live rock cd...ever. Indeed The Who were one of a kind. And "The Who Sell Out" is also the first 'concept' cd ever done in rock. Yeah, I'm a fan.

I think I heard some of their stuff but wasn't a big fan. Don't remember thinking they were bad, but just not being a fan of their style. Kinda like Iced Earth. They have some stuff I like, but its not the stuff that fits their normal style.

The list of all bands I actively listen to goes like this:

Axenstar
Dragonforce
Dream Evil
Edguy
Falconer
Firewind
Freedom Call
Galneryus
Heavenly
Kamelot
Rhapsody of Fire

Chances are, if a band is somewhat known power/prog/symphonic metal, I've come across them at some point. I usually don't spend too much time listening to a band I'm not familiar with unless they hook me quickly with the stuff I hear.

There are a few bands I've been meaning to get around to that had stuff that interested me but I hadn't pursued to see if they were really good. I think they were Iron Fire, Primal Fear, and Nocturnal Rites. And then there are a few bands that have a style I like but don't have any songs that really excite me. I think Elevenking and Fairyland fall into that category. I may look into them as they come out with new albums, because I think they have the potential to be a band I'll listen to. (by they way, I'm really picky about my music ;))

PokerPacker
June-25th-2009, 06:43 PM
I wouldn't say they're any more passionate than name bands - just that they don't have the big bucks behind them, so they appear "truer" to the music. Maybe its not more passion necessarily, but that they don't write music that will appeal to the masses. They write music that they like and thus people who like them specifically will really like. Kinda like how a pg-13 movie gets more people to watch it while a rated R movie can do what they want artistically and let the people who wanna watch it enjoy it as they think it should be.

Truth is that if any of the no-namers we hold near and dear were to suddenly become famous, there'd be people screaming for their heads and loudly proclaiming their suckitude.
I witnessed this happen first-hand. I listened to Dragonforce while they were still a no-name band. At that point, there was nothing but great things said about them. Once they hit it big, you get the idiots who compare every metal band to Dragonforce saying Dragonforce is better, and you get the idiots who compare every metal band to Dragonforce saying Dragonforce sucks balls. Both groups annoy me immensely. Hey idiots, Dragonforce doesn't play that style of music, so don't compare them!

There were concept albums before then as well. A few Folk concept albums were recorded in the 1930's/40's. But someone mentioned the WHO as the first to release a Rock concept album. Not really sure who was the first to do this in Rock but it's the first time I ever heard someone say it was the WHO. I had always learned it was the Beach Boys. I want to say it was "Little Deuce Coupe".

Metal concerts are pretty supportive. What I mean is, people look out for each other. I have come close to a couple of fights, but they were broken up by people unknownst (is that a word?) to me that were on my side.

You do have jerks at metal concerts, but the people around you notice the same jerks, and they will stand by you as long as you are in the right.

Be on the wrong side of the crowd and yes, it could get ugly. I have seen that as well.

Nope. Wasn't joking at all. Ok, all of them weren't no-name bands per se. But most on those lists I posted have no business on anyone's list of top 5 bands.

As for my Top 5? Well, its nearly impossible to break it down to 5. But I guess I'll take a stab at it. In no particular order:

1. Journey
2. Queen
3. The Eagles
4. Bon Jovi
5. Foreigner
6. The Beatles
7. Guns 'N Roses
8. Coldplay
9. Led Zeppelin
10. Aerosmith
11. Boston
12. Fleetwood Mac
13. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
14. Rolling Stones
15. U2

Ok, so I couldn't break it down to just five. But you could probably find my top 5 amongst those listed above.:cool2:

I think I prefaced my comment with 'rock' concept album. If you want to take it further back you can find 'concept' cds/albums that go back to the 1930's in the folk/blues genre. I do give some props to the poster who called me out though because The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' is 1 year earlier than The Who. Zappa though was later. The Who however still trump both bands.

There sure are a lot of metal heads here. I dont fall into that category myself. I'm more of an indie dork. (And for the record I would like to point out that there is a HUGE difference between unsigned "no names" and bands on indie labels. Yes, a large majority of unsigned bands are unsigned because they arent great. But there's a huge difference between not being on the radio - that means nothing - and not being signed.) Aaaanyway...

I'm not sure I could ever just chose 5 but here's a crack at it:
The Beatles - Objectively the "greatest" band ever. It really is incredible what they were able to do in the relatively short time they were together.
The White Stripes - I love Jack White for keeping real rock and roll alive.
The Mountain Goats - John Darnielle is maybe the greatest non-rap lyricist still making music.
The Thermals - Catchy, smart, loud, raw, awesome.
The National - They had a bit of a slow start as a band but their last two albums are masterpieces. Just beautiful music.

I have to list some honorable mentions that I love and think are very important, influential, or just-plain-awesome but couldnt fit into my own personal top five.
The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, The New Pornographers, Okkervil River, Animal Collective, Modest Mouse, Menomena (not a huge catalog but Friend and Foe is one of my favorite albums ever).

I call it the Nickleback Syndrome. When they first hit mainstream with "Leader of Men", it was something different, but catchy - and folks said whoa, whats THAT? Several albums later, millions of records sold - Nickleback sucks.

Only thing they did wrong was put out a buncha hits. Sure, no doubt they approach songwriting from a "lets write a hit" viewpoint. But honestly, I have no problem with that - much harder to write a catchy tune with mass appeal than it is to put together an artisitic vision. And I'd bet "they like" what they've written just as much as another band likes their creations.

I guess what I'm sayin is that if enough people eventually like something, no matter what the perception was at the beginning, it ceases to hold worth.

Apparently.

Didn't necessarily mean ALL of them were no-names. Prince wouldn't be, no. Then again, Prince isn't really a band, anyway. Some guy also had Tool listed. Here again, they aren't a no-name either.

But you have to admit, most of the bands listed are no-names. And I also thought at first that it was who people felt were the top five, all time. Didn't realize it was just people's favs. Sorry for the confusion.

Old Dominion Monarch 06

No I mean there are definitely some that people listed that could be generally considered 'no-names.' I just had to do a double take when you said that Prince was a no-name. and yeah, Prince himself isn't a band but he has a band and though his act is named just for himself he clearly has backing musicians and certainly can be included in someone's top 5 bands list. Though I think the title of the thread should have been something like Top 5 favorite musical acts that way people could include full bands, solo artists and everything in between. I know my true top 5 favorite musical acts don't consist of just 'bands.' But I did my best to stick to the topic at hand with my post though I did mention Boards of Canada in my honorable mentions who happen to be an electronic duo. But whatever, who's countin' anyways

I figured that but I'm just saying that I dont think that should automatically discount them for a thread about favorite bands (or best bands for that matter).

A whole thread where people just list the same 20 bands over and over wouldnt be terriblly interesting anyway.

Personally, I prefer listing lesser known bands if only to broaden people's horizons (though in my case, I just happen to like them much better. I'm really picky about my music and most bands in general, not to mention well known ones, don't do it for me). I posted my exact list in another forum (I copy/pasted it from there to here) and I had one person who had never heard of them (except dragonforce as they are no longer unknown to the masses) and he responded like so:
"I have never heard of any of these bands (except Dragonforce) but I looked them all up, and I can say that you have influenced my musical tastes".

THAT is what I think music threads should be about.

edit: Its also nice when two people both listen to a lesser known band because then you KNOW that that other person has similar taste as you can you can exchange other bands.

Yeah, I hadn't discovered them until their 4th album was out, so Gus G was already gone. I hadn't realized he was in there until I started sniffing around to find out more about them. I was disappointed by the fact he was no longer with them, but noticed that their music didn't go downhill without him, which really is amazing. Really says something about the composing when you can lose one of the most talented guitarists currently out there and still put out songs just as good or even better than before.

As for Mastadon, I think I was also turned off to them by their vocals. I'll have to check out Leviathan and see if it gives me the same revelation.

One Republic? Only like two of theirs. Apoligize is really good. But I think Timbaland makes that song. Stop and Stare is ok, too.

I'm with ya on Kings of Leon. I just got into them, too. I really like "Use Somebody". I like their sound. I'm gonna have to check into more of their songs.

Wallflowers? About the only thing I remember from them is "One Headlight". Pretty good song. I used to really like Goo Goo Dolls. But my interest in them has waned over the years. But they do have alot of good songs, I must admit. I think I might have one Better than Ezra song on my iPod.

The rest of that, though? Hanson? Seriously?...

Shocking to me since the only 2 songs I've ever heard from Kings of Leon (Use Somebody, Sex on Fire) sound like B-side knockoffs from MCatIS.

I won't lie......it's a catchy song but it sounds like something Billy Corgan would have written when he was bored.

Breaking Benjamin made my list because I saw them Live in Jacksonville at Planet fest and they rulled the show and have been hooked on thier music since.

A friend of mine dragged me along to see them because "they are alot like Tool and Billy Corgan helped them work on guitar effects". I didn't realize I was going to see a Tool cover band. They played Sober and it was pretty embarrassing listening to him try and belt it out like MJK.

They're great guys too - did a leg of a Europe tour with them in 97 and got to know them pretty well. That was back before the two founding tenor saxers passed. They still kick ass though. Lloyd Knibb is an amazing drummer!
