What would you choose for someone to unearth several thousand years from today in a time capsule? One book, one song, and one movie to remember/learn about the United States.

Profiles in Courage, a book that wasn't actually written by the President but yet was passed off as if he did in fact produce it (sorry, I have to point that one out).

Song: American Pie
Book: The Grapes of Wrath
Movie: Forest Gump
The Song and Movie were easy choices for me, atleast when it comes to telling the story of the US.
The Book is a tougher one. I kept debating wether "1984" would be a better book, but in several hundred years, they may take it as reality. In the spirit of football, I think "Friday Night Lights" would be a great telling story as well.

Song (cheating, a whole album): Kind of Blue (Miles Davis)
Book: Underworld (Don Delilo)
Movie: Apollo 13
This was tons of fun to think about. Really, the book was the only easy one. If you haven't read Underworld, I highly recommend it. I love all of his novels, but that one was a life-changer... My approach was thinking of things that capture the essence of America, they probably won't need a factual history, really...
Others I considered for songs: Me and Bobby McGee, Like a Rolling Stone, Take the A Train.
Other movies: Goodfellas, The Great Escape, The Wild Bunch, Searchers

Edit: zoony, provocative question in spite of my glib response. My answer is I couldn't bear the responsibility of choosing.

Song: Jump - Van Halen
Book: 1776 - David McCullough
Movie: Civil War - Ken Burns
Aside from the song, which I think best captures the fun side of America. I go with the historical perspective. "1776" and "The Civil War" are excellent accounts of key moments in American History. Illustrates much of what was the best and the worst of our history.

I went for the political cartoons, b/c it would represent a snap shot of many differnt points of views and what we wrestled with or considered important throughout our history.
As a novel, I think any of Twain's masterpieces would be great. I kind of like Conneticutt Yankee better because it wrestles with and extols Democrasy, liberty, and American ingenuity.

I've been trying to figure out what to pick/post but Huck Finn is actually THE PERFECT choice. Absolutely timeless and quintessentially American. Great choice Zoony.

I went for the reality of America rather than the ideal. I know everyone thinks I am just goofing around but...
I chose "Fox in Socks" because as we've grown we've become much more adept at doublespeak and gobbledeegook than saying anything of real substance. It seems that from our highest offices to our legal system to our supposedly most trustworthy industries, the prime directive that has driven America for my entire adult life has been to confuse and fleece the citizenry.
I went for "Gymkata" because as anyone knows violence is always the best answer, especially if there's a pommel horse around. Like Kurt Thomas' hero in the movie, we're surrounded by a Village of Crazies.
And Mojo Nixon's "Elvis is Everywhere" is just ****in' cool. In many ways that fat person in the beginning of the video showing us the framed photo of the cloud formed in the shape of Elvis represents so many of us. (see confused and fleeced citizen reference above)
