I hate this cheeseball crap, and since they feature the Cowboys (seemingly) every year, I hate it even more.

You hate that a kid with cancer got to hang out with his favorite team? Way to be, Ebenezer.

good story, Marion Barber is a class act. I am so happy for that kid.

I still hate the Cowboys on the field, but the team did something special for someone in need, kudos to the cowboys.

I throw up in my mouth a little that I had to watch the Cowboys, but was very happy for the kid. Very cool.

Says the guy who posts 99% of all the Cowboys threads ever posted in the ATN.

oh wait, that's right, this one is a positive story...

I agree. If it was done out of the goodness of his heart, reporters wouldn't have been invited along to talk about what a great story it is. A real humanitarian a good deed even when there are no thanks or recognition. Pieces like this just go to show how selfish these so-called "community servants" are. How do you think reporters find out about stuff like this? Agents and PR people pitch stories to the media to get their players/teams positive exposure.

Romo helped the old man on the street and took that homeless dude to the movies and never asked for a bit of praise or spoke a word about it. But he would never be praised for it.

There also wasn't a six-and-a-half minute puff piece on ESPN about those stories.

As someone who works in PR, it's easy to tell the difference between a story about an organically occurring good deed and one that has been pitched for a piece like this. This was definitely set up specifically to paint the Cowboys in a positive light.

It's nice for the kid, and I'm sure it made him feel great, but the story wasn't about him. It was about the football team. That's what makes me angry.

You do realize that there have been several "My Wish" things before with many many other teams, right?

Yep. Not a fan of those, either. I'm against the concept, not the team that chose to utilize it. Pitching stories is part of what I do for a living, and stories like this piss me off because it seems dishonest to pitch them. It's why people think PR practitioners are shameless self-promoters. There's a line between putting a positive spin on something and bragging, and stories like this are evidence of people who are eager to cross it.

It's funny how people rip into public figures and organizations who do charitable things for publicity, yet 99 times out of 100 those same folks won't ever do 1% of the good that said figure/organization accomplished.

Should we be foaming at the mouth that doctors and teachers actually receive money for what they do? Where do they get off, they don't care about anyone, they just wanna get paid!

There's bound to be more to get "angry" about than this, sweet lord...

I actually liked the story. The point of the "My Wish" series is to fulfill somebody's dream and I'm glad the kid got to meet Marion Barber. I understand that people might be ticked off because they think that ESPN might be pandering to the Cowboys again, but here that's not the case. Let's face it, if they had a "My Wish" with someone who wanted to meet Portis or Cooley, the majority of the board would have no problem with it. In this case, let's just let bygones be bygones.

Fair enough. Just making sure you weren't saying the Cowboys were the only team that seemed this way and that none of them actually do good things without needing to be recognized.

Puff piece, shameless grab for attention, or any thing else that is said about this story.
No matter what the kid got his wish. Good came out of the action. Sometimes when your one of the organizations that try and help kids, an article making a corporation look good will get other corporations or individuals to think about what they can do also. These organizations live by donations and good will, they need the publicity as much as the Corporate sponsor.

Nice to see the kid get his wish, regardless of what "intentions" the team may have had behind it. Frankly, I'd prefer to think there was nothing but good behind this, and I'm disappointed to see Skins fans trying to tear at it, even a little.

You guys have it all wrong.

Its not that I'm not happy the little kid with cancer got his wish, yeah - that's a great, heartwarming story - for People magazine. I watch Sportscenter for sports, not this crap. Save this stuff for the Disney channel.

And for all of you saying how insensitive I am and classless and such, how many hours did YOU volunteer in a children's hospital last year? I'm willing to bet its in between zero and jack ****. There are hundreds of thousands of kids suffering all types of potentially terminal ailments from cancer to burns, who will not get "their wish." So please, save the comments.

because sports is more than just the game- and I have voluntered- as well as having a friend with a kid w/ leukemia. I was there a few times when he would get the Chemo treatments and a spinal tap. I also hung out and met a few other kids.

BTW- Mark Rypiens son died of cancer in the late 90's. His son was only 3. Mark is a HUGE supporter of the Childrens hospital here in Spokane, WA- and frequently visits the kids in the hospitals (I have a signed pic from one visit and he gave my friends son a signed football). And guess what?? Its on the news many times a year- and when he holds special charity events- it's also on the news.

So get over your PR self man- grow up and maybe grow a heart. I hate the ****ing Cowpukes as much as the next Skins fan- but when someone does something for a child- they deserver praise, recoginition and a spot on Sports Center.

Nothing like a little message board self-righteousness in the morning!

The self-righteousness begins and ends with people trying to belittle this program because it's for evil, evil publicity. Because you guys are so above that, and all. Executing each daily action with only the holiest of intentions.

You don't wanna see it on Sport Center, then don't friggin' watch it.

Who cares if it's a fluff piece or whatever? These organizations need the publicity and I would bet pieces like this draw more interest and donations and such to Make-A-Wish and the like than it does draw viewers to SportsCenter or the Dallas Cowboys. The one with David Wright last night was cool. That kid could rake the ball!

organizations like make-a-wish can never get too much pub. Like I've read many times here in other threads, if you don't like to subject matter, skip it. To actually take the time to comment negatively on said subject matter seems bizarre....
