The subject is Bengals rookie Michael Johnson, and inquiring minds want to know why the former Georgia Tech star defender slid to the third round in the NFL Draft.

Despite his team-high 17.5 tackles for loss, including 9.0 quarterback sacks in 2008, Johnson drew criticism from NFL scouts and draft experts for not playing hard all the time and showing too much inconsistency.

Little did they know the pain he had endured. That lingering groin and abdominal injury turned out to be a sports hernia.

“I’m not really trying to put anything out there as far as an excuse,” Johnson said. “You get on the field and go play.”

And nobody played better on defense during Bengals minicamp than the freakish 6-foot-7, 266-pounder. Johnson is listed as a defensive end, but he got snaps at defensive tackle and outside linebacker.
Translation: He’s extremely versatile and he’s going to get significant playing time.

“It felt good just trying to learn everything so I can go out and play fast,” Johnson said. “I feel like I’m a pretty intelligent guy. The coaches are showing they’re confident enough in me to put it on me.”
Johnson swatted passes, showed an explosive burst off the edge and displayed the speed, range and pass-rushing ability needed to play weak-side linebacker.

“He’s exhibited the athleticism we saw that he had,” head coach Marvin Lewis said. “His temperament and speed have been outstanding. When you give him something to do, he goes out and does it.

“He’s been able to handle coaching ... and get better. He’s a young player with a lot of physical tools and he’s proven to us he has the mental capacity to handle it. Generally, when you combine those two elements, you have a very special player.”

How special? Teammates are calling him the second coming of 11-year NFL veteran Jevon “The Freak” Kearse, who has 73 career sacks.

I liked Michael Johnson a lot and couldn't figure out why people were so down on him especially when his character has been top notch throughout his tenure at GT. Turns out he played hurt the whole season last year.

My thoughts exactly, I really wanted Dallas to draft Johnson, he would of looked ridiculously good across from Ware playing some OLB and nickel DE. Also would of been a smart pick for Washington, Johnson, Carter, Haynesworth, and Orakpo all getting after the QB would have some serious potential. I think the Bengals got a pretty good one here, wouldnt be surprised if he's one of the leagues better pass rushers in a couple years. Who knows though.

Lol too bad he's not going to see much success as long as he's on that team.

but how do you define success? winning rings or putting up numbers? cuz on that team he will put up numbers cuz the defense will be on the field all day.

Generally I define it as winning games, but you brought up a good point. On that team he could put up the numbers and voted to a couple of pro-bowls or whatever. But if all you do is get a few fancy numbers, but your team never wins then I would say you have had a little bit of success, but not much. (I.E. Carson Palmer, Ochophyscho, TJ)

Their defense actually wasn't that bad a year ago. Ranked 12th or 13th I believe. It was their offense that was horrendous. I believe they'll be even better this season.

Their defense was 12th overall and their offense was 32nd!:D
I agree with you though; they will probably get better. When you're at the bottom the only way to go is up.

I wanted us to draft him. He reminds me of Justin Tuck. Sick sick sick athlete.

I'm nob gonna lie, I was one of his biggest critics before the draft. Nice to see him panning out.

He has gained a reputation for disappearing in games and taking plays off. Not sure why; it seemed like everytime I saw him play, he was blowing up plays in the backfield. I think he'll surprise his critics.
