look i dont even like baseball that much, but the MLB all star break is the unquestioned low point in the valley that is the sporting world in the months of mid june-august.

i have a few LEGEND golden ales and lagers ready for drinking and wouldnt mind watching a few innings right now.

**** it - My Morning Jacket "Live At Okonokos" it is.

Today, because there's no sports going on at all. No baseball to listen to tonight.

Bah

Once tomorrow gets going though there'll be baseball again!

MLB = snoozefest most of the time; real sports start in fall. Basketball and more importantly football and hockey.

The time between the end of the NBA season and the start of the NFL season.

I hate mid-summer so much. There's no reason for the question mark at the end of the title of this thread.

i really really dont love baseball

but it is kind of cool to watch a relaxing sport where i dont mind who wins now and again.

dont get that sort of relaxation/action in football and basketball

At no other time of the year would the Tour de France get this much coverage in the US, even with Lance making his comeback.

Yeah the summer is for me. The freaking Nats suck so baseball isn't even fun. The only thing summer has is golf (always like to watch Tiger Woods dominate especially in major championships) and nascar. Wasn't too big into Nascar growing up but its a good weekend activity these days with nothing else on. Joe Gibbs owning a team doesn't hurt either.

It's a good time of year to actually play sports. I think I'll go mountain biking tomorrow.

The WORST period of the ENTIRE YEAR for sports is right after the Super Bowl. Once that big game is done, you have a 2 or 3 week stretch of ice-skating, golf, a meaningless Pro-Bowl game, and maybe 1 or 2 meaningful college hoops game. March Madness is what saves the real sports fan from hanging himself......

As soon as the hockey season is over, its like "ehhhhh" until NFL Training Camps start up! That would be my vote, between hockey ending and football is the dullest time for me.

After the Super Bowl college basketball has gone into the late stretch of the conference play part of the season preparing for the conference tournaments in March.

And I guess it depends on what "meaningful" is, I guess that Maryland win over UNC in overtime is meaningful. Bunch of meaningful conference games played during that period leading up to MM.

This period of the year isn't that bad...it's only today that sucks because there's no sports games to listen to on the radio. When baseball comes back tomorrow everything will be fine. The trade deadline is coming up, big names might be traded (Halladay)...this period of time isn't boring at all

Agreed.
Hockey and basketball both over.
No NFL for awhile.
I don't follow baseball (:snore: unless live)
Hell, at least there were the Olympics last year.

NFL > NCAABB > Baseball > NHL > NBA > Nascar > Soccer

EOS.

NCAA BB is amazing, again, when the Super Bowl ends conference play is already in full swing. Duke and Carolina play twice in like 5 weeks. Plus a whole lot of good play from all across the country.

There is no real "worst period of sports" in my opinion. I have trained myself to follow a year-long cycle of sports and the pieces all overlap, with a few holes. There is a period in November after the World Series, before the NBA and NHL start, where nothing goes on in the weekdays save for Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. That is as close as it gets to the worst period in sports.

After the Superbowl and before march madness.

The day after the MLB all-star game counts as the worst day, though.

I thought you were a Terps fan?

This superbowl-march madness period isn't bad at all, especially when bubble teams start to make their mark. Again, an example is the Maryland - UNC game where Maryland came back to win in overtime. This took place after the Super Bowl, and as Maryland gained momentum in their hunt for a spot in the big dance, the threads started to pop up around the tailgate during Terps games. I always like to see these bubble teams start to prove themselves during this period with big upsets.

Well as good a point as that is, it will never happen.
However the best reason to be a football fan apart from the sport itself is that the season runs from early august to late may. In june there is international competition of some sort, European, South American, World, North American. IN july there is all the transfer news and preseason games. IN august it all starts up again. There is never a boring part during the year.

If i didnt have other sports the am. football offseason would be unbearable.

There is no way basketball is better than hockey.

There is no way basketball is better than hockey.

Define "better."

I love both sports. But it's much easier for me to watch a random NBA/NCAAB game than an NHL game.

Sticksboi05
July-15th-2009, 11:46 PM
It's so much more fast paced and doesn't stop every other possession for a slight tap on the wrist. Granted, I watch both...ALOT but hockey is more physical, tougher and the atmosphere/intensity of playoff hockey is on a level beyond post 80's/90's basketball.

TGI Jef

id prefer to watch basketball, still see the value in hockey

but calling a sport better is beyond preposterous.

not enough HTML in the stratosphere to lay out why. different people have different prerferences.

to say anything is better is insane at best.

This is definitely the dead point in the sports calendar. This board and BS football sites like PFT are the only thing that get me through this period.

Not really...most would understand that when people say better it is the one word method of saying "in my opinion" but I guess you took it literally...alrighty then.

Sports on TV and in person are vastly different. I don't think anyone can say Sport A >>>Sport B. BUT...if you're talking about TV viewing experience, NFL rules. NBA is second. (only because I don't have a college with a B-Ball team) On TV, MLB and NHL both suck out loud.

Even the NHF Stanley Cup FINAL game was terrible. 90% of the game was showed from 1 camera that showed about half the ice, and you couldn't see **** of what was actually going on with that stupid little puck. And MLB has been riding the coattails of history and tradition for years. By all rights it should be less popular than hockey. It's a train wreck and a surefire cure for insomnia on TV.

I like to attend a baseball game every now and again, but I don't get psyched out about it. I just take this sportless stretch as a time to either work my butt off, enjoy time with friends, or.. well.. you know you could always spend the day in bed with a loved one.. :D

Baseball is and will continue to be the second most popular sport behind football. But this probably isn't the case in DC with baseball being gone for over 30 years

Naw he's right, regular season doesn't matter anymore, we are beyond that. Winning the division is expected now. All I want to see this year is improved defense, Varlamov in goal and how Knuble affects Ovechkin (who I hope has a career year and hits 70 G)

1) Redskins (always)
2) Capitals
3) Wizards (a few years ago this was flipped)
4) Nationals (and will stay so until we are a GOOD team)

Sticksboi05

I think the Wiz get back to the playoffs this year but they are now firmly in the #3 spot because the Capitals are cup contenders if they figure out how to play defense consistently. I really hope Varlamov starts this year. Arenas was at one point, the city's hero/biggest athlete but now it is Ovechkin and will be for his entire tenure here in D.C. which I hope is his entire career.

I know I'm in the minority but I'd have to say March. The only main stream sport I'm not a fan of is NCAA basketball and it get crammed down my throat for almost a month. Instead of listening to sportstalk radio about the Caps and Wiz, a Drake-UCLA basketball game is on. Then the week after I get constant golf talk with the Masters.
