drafting this early is so stupid. if someone gets injured your season is done.
all drafts should happen after the PS.

I really like this site http://fantasyfootballcalculator.com/
you can print out the draft board based on lots of mock drafts and that can help you in identifying where you would probably need to draft a player to get him.
I would try to go through a mock draft using your planned strategy before the actual draft, but also realize that things like region affect who people value more.
I usually go WR heavy early and late and try to pickup a QB and TE in the 7-8th rds

it all depends on your league. if its a QB heavy league, try and get brees/p manning/rivers/etc. if its a RB league, michael turner, d williams, AP, etc.
if you do a bunch of bonus yardage stuff, go to espn and pull up some charts on who had the longest carries all season.
dont draft any redskins whose name doesnt rhyme with shmortis.

yeah we have a 12 person league (i favor 8-10 myself...) and i'm right in the middle of the draft order.
which sucks... i'm right at that point where probably everyone before me will have drafted all RB's... so I could easily pick the top QB/Wr... but by the time it comes back around I'm only going to have mediocre QB's, WR's, RB's, and possibly even TE's to choose from... the list gets worse and worse with each pass.
so I have to figure out whats better... a top WR (Fitz/Moss? I'm going to randy moss... The Patriots have a much more successful air attack than the Cards do dispite the fact that fitz is ranked higher than moss...), or do I go with a top QB?
i hate being in this position. I'd rather pick last and know I get 2 picks in a row each pass through.

cooley had very low TD's last year, unfortunately.

Or Shooley.
i had shooley last year. his TDs disagree with your assessment.
and yahoo doesnt have portis as a first round pick this year. first time ive seen that.

I would say that 75 to 80%, if not more, of the fantasy sites or books don't have Portis as a 2nd round pick, and some even have him going in the 3rd round because of all his injuries, which is completely asinine. With the schedule the Skins have this season, Portis has the possibility to have a career year.
As for the OP, check WalterFootball.com, it's a good site that uses reason instead of media hype for their rankings.

its his lack of touchdowns that do him in on fantasy rosters. i think he had only 9 last year. unless youre in a yard heavy/low point TD league, portis is a 2nd tier runningback.

Rd 1 you'll be fine as long as MJD is drafted ahead of you. A quality RB will fall to you then. You're still getting a top-flight WR in Rd 2, or another good RB if the WR run really took off. Dont go QB in either round under any circumstances - PERIOD.

I woul not worry so much about getting who you want. The best way to run your draft is value related... and really reasearching the guys that will break out this year.
For example, there are going to be a ton of guys salivating for Peterson or Turner... but your chances of getting htem are slim at pick 5 or 6. So what I would do is insted of relying on the "cant cuts" look at guy in a perfect place to break out. See a team like Chicago for example. Forte was a beast last year, but most rookie hit that "sophmore slump" and they have Cutler who is going to open things up for the run game a bit... in this case, I would try and target value pick towards the end of the draft by getting a good look at Kevin Jones. He has hardly any war on him and he looks very strong so far in camp and PS. I nailed Steve Slaton in round 12 last year and that pick aone took me to the playoffs.
Its all about value and durability. Walterfootball is a good site to chek out.

Would you trade Percey Harvin for LeSean McCoy?
If your wrs looked like this: wes, fitz, to, Avery, Harvin
RBs looked like this: slaton, rice, jamal lewis, fred jackson, leon washington

It's not his lack of TDs that do him in, he gets praised for his consistency with having an average of 9 TDs for the previous 4 seasons. All the "experts" say he's on the decline and started to show that in the 2nd half of the schedule during last year's season. These experts fail to comment on how the o-line fell apart, and how Portis's only serious injuries came in '06 to his shoulder and wrist. The "experts" make it sound like he's coming off a major knee injury, and he's never had any serious knee injuries during his career.
Another thing that astounds me about 80+% of these "experts" is the fact they either have absolutely no respect for the Skins, or just refuse to look at the schedule. The Skins face this season 9 defenses who finished in the bottom half against the rush last season:
Detroit at 32nd with 172.1 ypg
Oakland at 31st with 159.7 ypg
Kansas City at 30th with 158.9 ypg
St. Louis at 29th with 154.7 ypg
Denver at 27th with 146.1 ypg
Atlanta at 25th with 127.9 ypg
Carolina at 20th with 119.5 ypg
Tampa Bay at 19th with 118.8 ypg
New Orleans at 17th with 117.8 ypg
With a schedule like that I don't see how these "experts" can still say that Portis is still worth a 2nd or 3rd round pick, when he has the chance to have his best season as a pro, which should make Portis worth a mid 1st round pick. I couldn't take Portis over AP, Forte, SJax, MJD, or possibly Turner, but I'd take him after any of those guys were gone.

This post is right on!! Strength of schedule Portis is projected 3rd behind Frank Gore and LT in a category alot of fantasy owners don't even consider....:cool2:

guys, we play bad run teams every year. last year we played the
detroit
st louis
cincy
cleveland
new orleans
seattle
thats 6 teams that all ranked in the bottom half against the run, and all we added this year was two more teams, so portis may hit double digit TDs. since hes been a skin he has never done the LT thing, or the AP thing, or the michael turner thing, or the last years D williams thing. he never scores that 3-4 TD game, and goes for 200 yards. not to mention his TD numbers went way down at the end of the season. 2 in the last 9 games, 7 in the first 7.
yahoo has him listed as the 13th overall player. that sounds pretty right to me.

I would avoid Sjax like the plague. He can be a baller, but until he can prove that the injury bug is gone, and the Rams fix that front five... seeing the you need the latter to prove the former... dangerous pick to say the least.

He barely played... LOL. I am not saying he is a lock, just a great value at the end of the draft... or to handcuff if you happen to get Forte.

100% agree, unless jason smith is a monster. they have smith, incognito, and brown now dont they? thats a pretty good 3/5 line.

I disagree, I love SJax this year. The o-line has been upgraded with T Smith and C Brown being brought in this offseason. With the new additions to the o-line and SJax being able to run like an Ox, I think he has a chance to put up great numbers, especially playing against weaker defenses in the NFC West.

thats if those lineman work out. hes still a gamble and his injury history has nothing to do with the oline.
if jason smith, incognito, and jason brown all play at the level they can play at, that line is good to go. theyve got some other decent young guys to play as well.
and he catches a ton of passes as well.

To answer the original question, I really like Sports Illustrated's rankings this year. Normally SI is useful only for "ooh, pretty pictures..." but they seem to have put some serious thought into their rankings this year, taking things like strength of schedule and offensive/defensive schemes into play. Their rankings this year are easily most in line with my methods of picking good fantasy players.

Thats true... but still too high for my liking. In mocks he is going top ten. If... IF that line works out well, Bulger could be a great late ound sleeper. He has the gift, but zero line.

I had to miss my draft last year and basically used the top 80 players that Scott Engel from SI listed on some web site. I had a strong draft and won my league last year (Matt Forte was my team's MVP..he was ranked #38 and I got him with the 40th pick in our draft...sweet!!!)....
