View Full Version : ESPN:Mosley: Favre encouraged Campbell during the offseason

You might be interested to know that Campbell's Mississippi neighbor, Brett Favre (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=112), was a source of encouragement when the young quarterback was trying to make sense of the offseason. Campbell and his father were fishing on Favre's ranch in late June when the 39-year-old stopped by for a visit. Campbell said Favre told him to "play your game" and to trust what had gotten him to this level. Then Favre told where to find the best bass and perch on his property.

I've heard JC say that before- that his dad coaches where brett worksout= and they have talked quite a bit over the years. I can't really stand Favre with his retire/not retired stuff- but if JC is picking his brain on football stuff- go for it.

What does that mean for Campbell to "play [his] game?" Who is Campbell, really? I hear so much talk about how Campbell has been in a different system every year (which isn't necessarily accurate), so when it all boils down, what type of QB is Campbell? If anyone has a knowledgeable answer or even an educated guess, it would be greatly appreciated. I mean this with no sarcasm or negativity, I just want to make sure Favre isn't giving out crappy advice.

You saying he didn't owe at least at dinner to those guys?
In that offense with that backfield it let's just say made it a hell of a lot easier to play QB.
Don't read too much into this, it's not like Jason was with BF working out together Favre was just trying to find out who was trespassing on his property :D

I got a copy of the 2005 Nokia Sugar Bowl just in case you want to watch it and give him a little respect for his accomplishments for the 2004 season and the Sugar Bowl in particular. Sure, Brown and Cadillac did make his life easier in 2004 but it was Campbell who stepped up in the Sugar Bowl.
I can understand why you may desire better play from him as a Redskin but he made it to the NFL because of his own accomplishments. His accomplishments this year will either keep him as a starter or not.
I agree with you that the conversation was probably just a few brief comments between two people in the same profession but I would bet that Jason was invited onto Farve's propery.
I personally would like to see all the quarterbacks excel.

As for the Auburn team that year they get no way near an undefeated schedule without the oline and those backs. That and as the Colt haters say "this isn't college".

Funny, but isnt it strange that none of the talent from that team has been able to become a stud on their own? Perhaps it was that JC kept college defenses honest enough for that two headed run game to go like it did... and in turn that run game allowed JC to do what he does well. What a concept!

When a RB gets to the Pro Bowl in the NFL if he is smart what does he do? What does an NFL QB do when he gets to the Pro Bowl? I know we are talking college but it's the same principal within NCAA rules.

Campbell is a tough nosed QB with a strong arm who is deceptively mobile out of the pocket. He seems to have accuracy issues at times on shorter throws to the sidelines and his mobility in the pocket is not as intuitive as elite QB's but he can set, move, re-set, and throw when he has too.
He is a QB who has a lot of resolve as evidenced by how he handled this last offseason and apparently he is a leader - his teammates at least back him up and it does not seem like player talk or lip service. Campbell has all the tools to be a successful NFL QB but there are some lingering questions on whether he has that "it" factor and whether or not he has enough of the "gunslinger" mentality a QB should have at times - this evident by his low TD and low INT numbers from last year. His statistics have across the board improved every year since he came into the league, albeit some of the increases have been nominal.
THAT IS WHO CAMPBELL IS ... that is who Favre told him to be

Carlos Rogers mentioned in an article a fews weeks back how different JC had been in the leadership role for the Redskins than he was his senior year at Auburn. Rogers said he was yelling at lineman and WR's when they weren't lined up right or whiffed on a play. Rogers thought it was possibly because the other players had the age and experience on JC that he didn't feel entitled to tell them what to do.
That's what I've also tried to tell people. JC took complete charge of the field his senior year and ran the show. I think it was because the OC was designing the passing plays to fit JC's strengths and that gave him more confidence.
Whatever the reason, I've not seen the fire or the confidence from JC in Washington that I saw watching him play his senior year at Auburn. I'm really hoping to see it this year.

Or how to play a 1000 years without missing a game
Or how to throw the most TD's IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL
Or how to let someone sack you so they can break the single season sack record
Or how to be an absolute gamer who can't walk away from the game and get a 12 million dollar contract to come out of retirement ...

I remember reading a story about the first time JC17 went to Favre's place. I remember reading that a group of people were there visiting but that Brett was nowhere to be seen because he was off chopping wood or something weird like that while guests were over. I don't think it's a crazy big deal that Favre talked to Jason while not really talking to other young quarterbacks. It's all just the Mississippi connection.

It's almost not even worth it to post an article about JC anymore.
You know what? If ES had been around after the 1990 season and playoffs we'd have said even worse things about Rypien. In 1990 he pretty much single handedly was the reason we lost to SF in the playoffs. The score was no indication of how the game played out. It was our game except for Rypien.
Then the next year he was probably the hottest QB in the league. Wish we had that OL now. I'd believe in Campbell now if we did. It's too bad they have trained him to take no chances and check down 95% of the time or maybe he'd have a chance to do what Rypien did, but this offense is totally different.
So it's just natural for fans to hate the QB until he wins it all. Campbell actually gets a lot more excuses than any other QB I've seen on this team.

He was responding to something you wrote, so if he's off topic, so are you.
And he's right. Why is it that the OL playing poorly for JC as a Redskin just an "excuse" when JC didn't do so well, but then when JC did do well the OL is all of a sudden a factor and gets credit?
He called you on the double standard, which is why you're so quick to tell someone else now to stay on topic, eventhough it was in response to your post.

Mine was written before Park City Skins told everyone to stay on topic. Maybe you should go back to page 2 and read a little.
Again I think anytime you get a Pro like BF giving encouragement to others it's a great thing. That is what leader types do. Many times when they are on a team it's not how good they are it's how good they make others around them.

Go where?
The all time INT leader and a qb who...well, doesn't exactly have an enthralling start to his NFL career.
Even the Campbell homers can admit that numerous questions surround the guy.
I don't hate Campbell, I'm not a huge fan of his either. He just happens to the the Redskins QB....so therefore I root for him...but remain slightly skeptical that he's the man for the job.
I don't really see a problem with my stance.
