In face of criticism, Campbell stands tall

By: Rick Snider
Examiner Sports Columnist
August 20, 2009 The candidate list has been exhausted.

Jay Cutler was supposed to be the next quarterback of the Washington Redskins. He landed in Chicago. Mark Sanchez was coming. He's with the New York Jets.

Michael Vick ended up in Philadelphia. Colt Brennan? Still looking like a third stringer after a poor preseason opener.

Jason Campbell has survived more attempted coups than a Third World dictator. Maybe a little tattered and worn after an emotional six months, but those competing flavors of the month all melted away.

Campbell starts against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, knowing not everyone wants him. There were a few offseason meetings with coach Jim Zorn and the front office to sooth feelings. Forgive and forget? Campbell doesn't like the implications of trying to replace him.

"You seize every moment and that's what I'm doing now," he said. "Were some things in the offseason embarrassing? Yes, it was, but you've got to block that out of your mind. Some people perceive [replacing him] as you're not a good quarterback, but you just have to say you are a good quarterback."

I am a big Campbell fan. I think he can do it. I hope he makes Dan pay this offseason.

There is a good article in the Breaking News section on the Homer McFanboy site. I think everyone should read it.

The thought of sitting in the stands at FedEx this year and watching Jason behind center for another 8 games is daunting to say the least.

The Redskins were not able to complete deals to replace him, yet it somehow shows he accomplished something because no one in the NFL wanted JC for anything of value to make a trade viable?

I guess sometimes you uncrumble the tissue, wash it off and pretend it's useful when you aren't left with other options.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect someone who consistently posts immature babble like this to recognize when someone is acting like a man.

If I'm reading your analogy correctly, then you're just simply saying for us to just go into the season with him as our proclaimed quaterback. ;)

LMAO. Nice. However, I agree with socal that the fact that he wasn't traded isn't an asset of his.

Compare how Campbell ahndled the situation vs. how Cutler handled the situation. The article is praising Campbell for acting like a man, instead of like a child as Cutler did.

Only a person looking solely for a negative spin would arrive at socal's conclusion. The article is pretty self-explanatory in that it is praising Campbell for his attitude through all that, not for "not beign traded." Even if you were to only read the title of the article the same conclusion could be reached. Only if you're trying to further an agenda would you hold a different interpretation.

WTF? If people are children for using analogies, then ES is a glorified kindergarten. You of all people have some cahones criticizing someone else for using an analogy.

Seriously, you can't say Campbell didn;t handle the situation like a man. He's still here and he's still trying to be the leader. Set aside your opinion of his QB play, if at all possible, and just look at his attitude through all of that.

elkabong, i think campbell is a good dude but cmon. running off to sports illustrated telling them he felt like used toilet paper is not what a man does. cutler is a baby, fine. but dont act like campbell took the high road. the sports illustrated thing kills that whole idea.

not to mention, it wasnt like he could come out and list off his accomplishments like cutler could. a 25 TD probowl QB throwing for 4000 yards has a little more "cry baby leeway" than a guy throwing 13 TDs who doesnt have any "sexy" numbers or a winning record.

That is a good article, but comment 8 stands out.

I bring this up only so people will read it and form their own opinions. I didn't verify comment 8 independently, and I don't want to start a discussion about it because it will derail this thread into oblivion as so many others have.

As to the article, Sonny was kind of put off with how Jason reacted (he commented on last Thursday's radio pregame show). I think at this point, Sonny wants people to pretty much shrug off 90% of whatever the team does to them. I agree to a degree, but I think the treatment was bad enough where most agreed "we better replace him if this is true" and the Skins failed to do so. So I think Jason does stand tall, even though many (apparently including Sonny) feel his conduct was lacking while he went through the offseason.

He had showed a good attitude but did he have another option? I don't think so because if he had gone off etc. I bet he wouldn't be the starter right now.

exactly. a guy that hasnt performed anywhere up to his draft status really couldnt do anything other than take it. cutler may be a baby, but i think the guy felt disrespected. imagine if we came out and told portis we were getting a new RB, the guy would spazz out and **** talk this team until the end of time. and he can get away with it, cause hes a complete beast. campbell doesnt have that luxury.

If there were an article about JC saving babies from a burning building, you people (you know who you are) would probably say he started the fire in the first place and only saved the babies so he could eat them! I think I need to stay away from this place for a while.

I am not a fan of what he said in bold. Seriously, I doubt any QB, even the 2nd and 3rd stringers, thinks they are not a good qb. The only way to prove it is by your performance on the field, and not by just saying you are good qb.

Well, I think all he's talking about is keeping confidence despite everyone bringing you down.

Confidence is absolutely key for a quarterback. They need to know that the decision they're making is the right one, the pass they're making is going to work, and the team needs to see that in them as well.

It's a chicken/egg because often good QB play requires confidence and vice-versa.

Just stop already man. This is getting pathetic. You honestly are trying to tell me that after handling the situation in the most professional way possible that Campbell is immature because when asked about the situation by SI he shared how he felt?

It wasn't the stupid scenario you are trying to spell out where Campbell went crying to them. They approached him for the interview, they asked him about the offseason stuff, he told them how he felt at the time, and also said that he didn;t let it get to him. You're saying if you were in that situation you wouldn't have felt that way? please.

Like I said, you apparently can't seprate JC the QB from JC the man. His performance on the field doesn't hold any bearing as to how he handled the situation. So admitting he hadled it in a mature fashion won;t make you wrong on the rest of your stance with JC. It's ok BLC, you don';t have to pull this crap here.

http://www.homermcfanboy.com/2009/08/20/campbell-haters-beware/
So, to recap, because of a substandard offensive line, Campbell faced as much pressure as any quarterback in the league. And yet, statistically speaking, he was one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the NFL. His throws were almost always on target, but Campbell’s receivers dropped more passes than anyone else.
His offensive line failed him. His receivers failed him. And at the end of the day, fans (and even his own front office) figured it was easier to blame Campbell than to admit there are much larger problems with Washington’s offense. It makes sense though. It’s easier (and cheaper) to replace one guy rather than half the offense – even if he’s not the problem.

Campbell’s receivers led the league in dropped passes with 39. We repeat – Redskins receivers dropped more passes than anyone else in football in 2008.
Receivers Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El both ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in dropped passes. Moss ranked second with 12 (behind only Cleveland’s Braylon Edwards with 15), while Randle El was tied for ninth with nine drops.
Very nice Read.........

I bring this up only so people will read it and form their own opinions. I didn't verify comment 8 independently, and I don't want to start a discussion about it because it will derail this thread into oblivion as so many others have. For anyone reading this post, here is the comment in question:

You should also post the DVOA and DYAR statistics from footballoutsiders.com. You only referenced half of the stats and only the ones that make Campbell look good. In the overall analysis of passes thrown he was 16th (DYAR) and 18th (DVOA) respectively.

And if anyone decides to actually look up all of the analysis of Campbell via footballoutsiders.com you will find this bolded sentence.

“he simple version: DYAR means a quarterback with more total value. DVOA means a quarterback with more value per play.”

Campbell was in the bottom half of the league. But you left all of that out for some reason… even though the take into account drops, routes, over/underthrows etc.

Subjective.I find it funny that the person who left this comment decided to add the word "subjective" at the end, because things like "more total value" and more value per play" are what are subjective. Attempting to measure things like that is like the QB rating system: it places a numerical value on things that have subjective values. All I care about are the raw numbers. Let the viewer come to their own conclusion from them, rather than trying to come up with some (likely flawed) mathematical method for measuring how good a QB performs.

You see BLC... the difference between you and I is the fact that I am not starting endless Campbell threads making excususes for the guy. I surf here, I read different articles and I talk about ALOT of different subjects. Anyone here can easily check your post history (or wvtbreds for that matter) and see tha all you do is run from thread to thread bitching about Campbell. 90% of your posts are all that its about. Like I stated before. Pathetic.
Maybe instead of focusing on JC, you should try to think of the next crappy receiver you name your handle off of.
