View Full Version : Easy Training Camp Reason For Loss?

Im listening to the Lavar show right now and Lavar thinks the main reason for our loss was that the Giants were in better playing shape. I kind of agree with this and I remember during training camp players were saying that this year training camp was more 'fun' and not as demanding (sorry no link) and the vet's being able to stay at home.. Do you think this is playing into our slow start?

More evidence that Zorn is in way over his head and has no clue.

maybe, just maybe we lost because the Giants were better than us, and had the added advantage of opening the season at home :whoknows:

That is possible (and the obvious solution to why), but because this is a forum I thought I might try to provide some original insight as to 'why?'

Their coaches were certainly better than ours (except for Danny Smith).

Last season training camp was like boot camp. Half the team was injured during that grueling stretch

We didn't lose because of being out physicalled. We lost because our team is not smart

Or perhaps because they were just better than us on that particular day.

We lost by 6 to a very good football team on a day where we made far too many mental errors. With all of the stupid things we did the margin of victory should have been over 20 points, as it was we were an onside kick away from having a real shot.

Calm down, all you chicken littles, the sky is NOT falling.

on that note, I'm curious how the 49ers are gonna fare down the second half of the seasons... all reports and that big mike ran a vicioius camp and while it may pay dividends at the beginning of the season, ask tomlin about how it affects the team towards the end... far as the skins are concerned though, I didn't see anything that indicated we lost cause we weren't in shape and we are healthier going into a season than we've been in a long while...

Or maybe our HC is in over his head, both he and the D-Coordinator are geniuses in their own minds and our QB can't think his way out of a paper bag... ?

And LaVar would know all about hard working and doing what his coaches asked of him.

I much preferred when we went up to Carlisle and didn't have the outside distractions of being at home. Camp shouldn't be a "holiday" camp. Your there to put in the hard work and forge the basis of everything for when Week 1 rolls around. I didn't like the vets being allowed to sleep at home this past camp. We should of had each and every last one of them fully committed to us 24/7, under our own supervision IMO, but I'm old school when it comes to things like that.

But that said, I wouldn't go down that road of making camp or anything else an excuse for Sunday. Were a mediocre franchise, the Giants aren't; and it showed on the field.

If anything, more than camp, I'd critique Zorn for the lack of playing time he gave the starters in pre-season. Giving your starters, particularly your O, limited playing time, is all well and good if you have a cohesive, confident unit that you know will step it up come Week 1. We have FAR from that, as evidenced again yesterday. :(

Hail.

I guess it's carried on to the season...

It's defintely shown that in guys like Hanyesworth who aren't in game shape yet. And on top of that, he's still been playing well.

Imagine if he were actually in shape ...

No its not, the reason were losing is because were not throwing the ball downfield and making the big plays. It's been seen by former GM's and analyst that Jason Campbell has been ignoring open receivers downfield, and throwing the check down passes. If it wasn't for that alone, we would be 5-1 right now.

I'm sure some players do not like to practice and are not in game shape on day one. (Portis, Haynesworth). I know that last year some players showed up out of shape (Kelly, Thomas). And I know that some of the linemen worked out harder than ever in Arizona. (Samuels, Dockery, Big Mike) and had a personal trainer to boot.

But, similar to figuring out playing time in pre-season, it's a tossup between being game ready and the number of injuries you have by working them hard. With one guy, that would be easy. With 53, it becomes a lot harder. I note that the rash of hamstrings we had a season or two ago seems to have diminshed. And I note we didn't lose two or three DL on the first day of practice. The OL we lost to injury were some of the oldest on the team, and, although the FO seemed clueless, injury to these older players should have been expected.

One added factor is that last year the team trailed off for the second half of the season. Although the coaches and FO zeroed in on the OL as the primary reason for the fall-off in performance (and then did nothing about it), the "tired legs" of the team were mentioned as contributing factors (sorry, no link, just memory). Maybe that contributed to the overall desire to reduce the toughness of camp.

Did that cause us to lose the Giants game? Gotta go with Bubba on that. Home team (again, thanks schedulers) and a myriad of other reasons. I'll go with OL. Feel free to go with playcalling, execution, Zorn, Campbell, the phases of the moon or any other reason. We lost. End of story.
