View Full Version : Strong up the middle

Well it looks like the Skins are strong up the middle against the running game, but unfortunately this team is among the leagues weakest on the outside. The Giants had more than a hundred yards rushing against the Skins and virtually none of it was straight up the middle with Hayneworth and Fletcher stuffing it.
Redskins are in serious need of several positions including pass rusing defensive ends, but outside linebackers are probably just as necessary right now because the Skins linebackers are not able to be in position to make tackles.
On the play in which Bradshaw elluded Daniels on that outside run and then cut inside, where were the linebackers on that run? That was Rocky Mcintosh's side and he was nowhere to be found. What a wasted 2nd round pick from Vinnie and we even wasted an extra pick to move up.
Even knowing that teams can only run to the outside, the Skins STILL cannot stuff the run. Unbelievable!

Perhaps we should try blitzing. I hear it's the next big thing.

I think the cushion our CB's gave their WR's really hurt us on the sweeps and tosses. Once their backs ran past the pursuit they were in the second level. Add some missed tackles are you had plays like the Manningham TD.
Up the middle, well the only team I've ever seen do that to the NY Giants is the Steelers on the goal-line. Impressive.

well actually I thought Daniels did a good job on that play of turning the play INSIDE. I don't expect him to tackle a scatback but he sure needs to funnel him inside to Fletcher and Mcintosh. But I have no idea where the other 10 redskins were on that play? Its a mystery. Maybe somebody can ask Blache.

our blitz packages are baffling to me. it seems like we can blitz 8 guys but only 1 every 3 times will we even get close to the qb

McIntosh is a damn good linebacker. Not sure what game u were watching. One play doesn't make you a bad player, he was around the ball all game.

It doesn't help that most of the Skins secondary likes to Hit not Tackle!

Rocky played ok but not great and yeah I was wondering where the hell the Lbs were on that play as Daniels turned the play back inside to where his help SHOULD have been.

Ridiculous. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
The Giants ran for 103 yards on 31 carries, that's only 3.3 yards per carry. We stuffed Jacobs almost all day, limiting him to less than 3 yards per carry. Only two teams did that in the entire 2008 season and one of them was the Steelers. Yes, Ahmad Bradshaw had a big 22 yard dash running off tackle but that was his only good run of the game. Furthermore, the Giants did not convert a single third down by handing it off. We stuffed the ****ing run.
There's plenty to be angry about after that game. Our defense tackled poorly and gave up too many plays through the air, particularly in situations that would have gotten them off the field. Our offense couldn't stay on the field, playcalling was absolutely atrocious, and we lost the time of possession battle by almost a full quarter. You made the mistake of honing in on the one positive from that game.

ROFL at this. It's a real good point though--I thought one of the big advantages with having Big Al was that by taking double teams, blitzers would be able to run straight through. If we don't blitz, seems to me we're not taking advantage of that capability....

I agree. It's unfortunate that we succeeded at the one goal we felt the defense HAD to achieve--stopping the running game--and yet still weren't able to get off the field. I think it goes back to the question people have had for a while about our CBs providing such huge cushions. It must be a coaching decision, but why do they persist at it? We also have Landry lining up over thirty yards back, so the odds of a truly huge play being given up are much lower, which should allow us to stop giving up these third-down conversions.
This also leads to one thing that's been annoying me on the coverage of the game--no credit going to Haynesworth. We did a MUCH better job of stopping the run this game then either game last season, and those two stops in the red zone were huge. If Brian Jacobs can't gain half a yard running up the gut in the red zone against us, with his line, then no one can--it's the one part of our defense I'm fairly confident in right now.

Well said . I think the team has a lot to work on . The tacking in the secondary was terrible, the play calling was "odd" and the WR Core outside ARE and Cooley but the Run D was very very good ...

Agreed. Even if our players were terrible, lets not throw in the towel and start packing up for next season, and yes we were extraordinarily good inside!
