I can't believe they're still fighting this. Anyways...

The battle of the Washington Redskins' team name has reached the U.S. Supreme Court, but don't worry, you probably won't have to tape over the Redskins' logo on your favorite jersey anytime soon.

Lawyers for a group of Native Americans filed a petition for certiorari in the case that has bounced around courtrooms for years, according to Legal Times. The Native American group claims that the name "Redskins" is a derogatory term for Indians. They want the Redskins trademark, which was issued in 1967, canceled.

The latest ruling on the case by the U.S. Court of Appeals said the claims weren't allowed because the group didn't file in a timely manner, not because any court agrees or disagrees that the trademark is offensive or racist. So now the group's lawyers are asking the Supreme Court to review that decision.

Oh, and awesome closing line!

So, Chief Zee is free to scalp as many Cowboys as he wants -- for now.

I wonder how many fans they lose if they become the Washington Bearcats.

Title is VERY misleading. They are not going to the Supreme Court. They simply have filed the paper work asking the Supreme Court to accept the case for review. 99 percent of such requests get denied every year. The issues in this case do not rise to the level of a Supreme Court review....will never happen. This group is just looking for more PR for their unjust cause.

The funnisest part is this:"The Native American group claims that the name "Redskins" is a derogatory term for Indians." Seriously, Indians? They want to talk about stereotypes and derogatory comments and they call them Indians? LOL!!!!!

If anyone is interested, an idiot first year attorney working for the firm representing the Redskins sent some pretty stupid emails after the Redskins lower court win. He ended up getting fired after he failed the Bar exam. You can read the emails here:

What's worse is that this is a group of four or five Native Americans who have repeatedly sought legal and moral support from Native American groups and tribes over the years and none will join their BS lawsuit nor even defend it. Repeated public opinion polls show Native Americans defend the use of the Redskins name at a much higher rate than white Americans. It's like 80-90 percent of Native Americans do not object because they know the real history behind the name and what it means....and it does not have anything to do with bloody scalps.

I read those emails....what a friggin' idiot! No wonder he couldn't pass the bar after taking it twice. He can't write a single decent sentence let alone use capital letters.

More worrisome, is this guy has pre-conceived opinions without doing any factual research. Anyone with Google and some brains (which this guy has none) can find information about the "Redskins" name that at a minimum, questions the allegations that the word is a racial slur. Nice future lawyer....let's hope he goes to work for the other side....Quinn (the Redskins law firm) will kick his *****.

when i was a kid in the early 1980's the asshats in moccasins or AIM as they like to be called, showed up on my reserve whining about how the Redskins, Chiefs and Braves all tarnished the Pan indian movement to gain respect, however they said this in front of a bunch of people wearing redskins hats and Chicago blackhawks apparel. sadly the irony was lost on the self righteous turds.

the Truth is that several of us are fans of the Redskins, much like how black people coopted the N word we dont see redskin as a term of disrespect at all.

but hey why let little things like the facts get in the way, the bleeding hearts can whine all they like.

I can't believe how much of an idiot that guy was. Those emails have circulated pretty much everywhere. If and when he passes, he won't land a job anywhere close to the level of firm he was fired from.

If it were to ever change, I'd still call them the Redskins...still wear Redskins stuff...act like it never happened.

The funniest thing about this whole situation is that "Redskins" doesnt refer to the pigmentation of skin but rather to the practice of a tribe in New England who crushed berries and painted their faces red before battle as a war ritual. But alas, ignorance has reigned supreme and everyone thinks it's a racial slur.
