I really enoy Tony K and think he is funny. He doesn't take himself to serious, which is a bit refreshing. HOWEVER, I thought he was on a sports station called ESPN980!? Then why does he devote a short period of sports talk, and everything else to pop culture? If I wanted to listen to that, I could turn on Hot 99.5.

Anyone else notice this and is a bit annoyed?

he does it because he can, because people will listen.

he has different segments of his show, where he look at different things - sometimes its pop culture, sometimes its sports, etc.

all in all i think the man is brilliant, and really enjoy listening to him.

Middle of the day radio on both ESPN980 and The Fan suck. Neither of them really get deep into sports like the other shows during the day. The Fan should put Riggo or someone on in place of Mike Wise. That show makes me fall asleep.

It's because they don't want to talk about the same **** ALL day. Basically happen anyway, but they try and mix it up mid-days sometimes.

Well, seeing as how a ton of threads discussing ESPN 980 (The official Redskins stations) shows and not just segments, have gone in this forum, I'm pretty sure its OK.

I miss Tony's uncensored internet show and Bea Arthur jokes.

He replaced Cowherd, I don't see how things could get any better.

Tony doesn't like talking sports as much because, if you haven't noticed, pretty much all sports talk shows cover the same stuff in the same day. His show is actually a nice reprieve from the inane babble of sports talk—especially after Mike and Mike.

I'm not going to outright defend him, because I think the extended segments on American Idol are pretty lame.

Tony's show does talk sports when it's relevant. The best thing about his show is that it doesn't force him to talk sports when there's nothing newsworthy to talk about.

I don't agree with some things he talks about, and the American Idol blabber gets old, but he's the best thing on local radio by far. He's funny, self-depricating, thoughtful, and is surrounded by a studio full of smart people.

Basically, he's the antithesis of everything an FM radio host normally is.

Tony talks to much about pop culture and himself to be on a sport talk station. There are plenty of other stations where he would fit in.

I was in Denver earlier this year and they had two local guys in the morning talking about the Nuggets, Avalanche, and Rockies. How cool would it be if DC had local guys in the morning talking about ALL of the local sports.

Tony's show just makes me remember why I miss The Big O and Dukes show. Sports talk 24/7 is repetitive and boring and having some actual GOOD hot talk in the mid day was great. Iinstead we have boring ass Mike Wise or old annoying Tony Kornheiser.

yay.

I hate you CBS

Here's the thing.

Avalanche, generally a good, talented hockey team that is traditioanlly successful.

Nuggets, a playoff caliber team with a young superstar that is one of the top 10 names in the league.

Rockies, just came off of a World Series run and is routinely around the top of their division.

Caps DO get a lot of play on both stations in this market now. Wizards didn't get a ton last year because, well, they sucked. Natinals don't get a lot of talk because, well, they've sucked.

If you have 3 or 4 moderately successful franchises in your city they'll be talking about all of them. If you only have 1, then you're probably only going to hear about that 1 and the NFL team (and god forbid if that NFL team IS the successful one, cause then its just going to be NFL).

That's been Mr. Tony's show for years. That is just what he does. Sure it annoyed me at first but after a while you start to like it.

It's because they don't want to talk about the same **** ALL day. Basically happen anyway, but they try and mix it up mid-days sometimes.

But that's sports radio. Most of radio is repetitive--sports radio talks about the same hot topics in sports, music radio plays the same songs over and over, etc. That's nothing new. Its set up that way so anytime a listener tunes in, they hear the hot topics of the day. Yes, it's repetitive and old if you listen to sports radio the entire day, but only a very small minority of people actually do that. Most people listen in the morning during the drive to work, and then again in the afternoon on the way home.

Sports talk doesn't have to be repetitive--there are plenty of sports stories out there every day. It's just that these two stations happen to focus mainly on the Redskins, so it gets old. Its rare that on either of these two stations you get informed, interesting shows discussing all topics of the NFL, from all teams. It's just unfortunate that way because they are so Redskins-centric.

I would love to hear more about NFL, and a few other sports, all day long. But for them both being sports stations, sports talk is severly lacking during the midday hours.

If Tony K and Wilbon had a PTI-type of show on the radio for 2-3 hours, that would be quite excellent, but a stretch given how much preparation is needed to do a well-informed radio show and a TV show each day. But that doesn't mean they couldn't put in two or three true sports guys who would be successful with that type of comedy/sports format.

I agree with this. And it's not even close. DC radio is in a sad state right now.

I haven't lived in an area outside of DC to compare the local stations to. What station outside of the area makes it better?
