Wow...Zorn says in reference to Jason Campbell not sliding when he runs with the ball and I quote:

"He's doing what I asked him to do, I asked him NOT to slide when he runs because he's not a good slider."

UMMM..WHAT?!

Look at around 3:25 and listen..

Unbelievable...are you kidding me Zorn? You don't want Jason Campbell to slide when he runs with the ball because "he's not a good slider"?

Sigh....

JC doesn't look like the kinda guy that slides... I guess Zorn doesn't want to see him get hurt while sliding :P

All QB's except Roethlisberger, McNabb and Vick slide when they run. JC is far from that kind of QB. He needs to slide when he runs otherwise he WILL get injured.

I don't agree with Zorn here in not wanting him to slide....thats like asking someone to run out in front of a truck instead of waiting for it to pass by.

Sounds like JC needs some of those "slip-n-slide" drills... :evilg:

and ughhh...I never knew that a post pattern meant the WR was running to the "goal post"..:silly:

Thanks for posting Z!

In Zorn's defense, Campbell really isn't a good slider. There's probably a much greater chance of him getting hurt trying to slide than there is if he just does his thing. Sure, you could work on it in practice, but don't you think there are better things to work on?

The upside of Campbell not sliding is that he's more likely to pick up some extra yards (and injuring a few safeties in the process, lol). Whether that outweighs the downside remains to be determined.

Like what happened to McNabb AND Hasselbeck? Granted both were aiming for the endzone but they went head first and both were knocked out of the game with broken ribs.

Sorry man..I disagree completely. He NEEDS to slide instead of diving head first and if he gets hit while sliding then it's a 15 yard penalty.

It CANT be THAT hard to just slide. I honestly can't believe people are agreeing with Zorn in JC not sliding. Thats just ludricrous.

If he sucks at it, then he sucks at it.

No one is perfect. He isn't the most coordinated qb in the league.

I am just happy that we can coach around that aspect of his game.

Zskins, thanks for taking the time to post this. It is appreciated.

I still miss Redskins Report with George and Riggins.....but I like the host of this show too.

Well what about what happened to Trent Green a couple seasons ago? He was sliding perfectly well and got his head taken off. Out for the year if I remember correctly. You can provide examples from both sides of the argument that support your case. That's pretty irrelevant imo.

Point is, I would say that it isn't a bad call telling JC to do whatever he is comfortable doing. Based on his runs the first 2 weeks, I would say that while he isn't sliding, he's not exactly looking for contact. I'm fine with this.

If he's not going to slide he should just do what Steve Young used to do and just keep running down the field avoiding people and score TD's.

Just don't go all crazy like Cunningham did and got himself hurt.

Zorn was asked (from an emailed question) why he keeps running to the left side and being predictable.

As I expected, Zorn didn't really have an answer.

I think we need to have some new ES guidelines.

Days 1-3 after a game is the time to ***** about how we played and/or criticize players and coaches.

Days 4-5 are trying to collectively think of ways we can do better.

But day 6, the day before the NEXT game, should be reserved for positive posting about how we're going to kick the **** out of whatever team we are playing the next day.

I have been very critical of the playcalling too, but right now bitching about it is just a buzzkill. I'm ready to kick some Detroit Lion ASS!

No I'm with ya bud. I just want to score more than 2 TD's. 3 would be a gift.

This sliding thing might be a physics issue.

Think about baseball. I used to play baseball, and it was a hell of a lot easier for me to hit a homer, than it was to slide feet first into second base.

Then again, I am 6'3, and have long legs.

If you think about the greatest base stealers in history, like Rickey Henderson, they all seem to be shorter, or at least they don't have long legs.

Have you ever seen a tall pitcher slide into second? Me either.

Imagine tall Randy Johnson trying to slide feet first.

Or in an extreme example, imagine Manute Bol trying to slide feet first into second base.:hysterical: It would look like a giraffe trying to get down.

While it would be great if he could slide, they might be worried about him messing up a knee or ankle trying to do it.

They tried that, remember? He almost hurt himself and they stopped that drill. Campbell's a lost cause. He should just dive or lay some wood.

Well, unlike you we are not NFL coaches and do not get to see JC at practice everyday. We kinda just have to assume he is making the right call here. Maybe, next practice you and JC can go over sliding?

Umm, some of the greatest QBs of all time know how to slide. How are we to expect Jason to become a great QB if he can't slide? Oh wait, no need to tell me, "He's spent all but one season (this one) learning to slide in different system. Give him time." You JC apologists and your excuses really crack me up.

Thanks!! Great to be able to watch this before the game.

That was some sweet footage on Charlie Taylor. I loved how he fought for the pass in the endzone.

That was enlightening about Zorn adjusting to Campbell's issues with sliding. It shows me how Zorn is continually trying to work with his QB to leverage what he does best and is most comfortable with.

I suspect Campbell simply (1) look to avoid contact whenever possible, (2) run out of bounds, or if those options aren't possible (3) dive forward and down -- sort of a headfirst slide with the arms wrapped around the ball and Jason quickly curling up to absorb any ensuing hit. I'd note that some refs aren't going to allow the defenders to smash into someone already down like that -- so many defender may opt to 'touch' him down, out of fear of being flagged.

As for avoiding commenting on predictably running left -- how can a coach say, we don't run right because our RT is a better pass-blocker than run-blocker? IMO. if Heyer improves, you'll see more runs to the right side. But for now, Samuels/Dockery and Portis are the main components of our power running.

Zorn is a great coach in the making. IMO, he can break the mold from coordinator to HC, unlike Cam Cameron. I just worry that he is trying to do to much, even though he is the best QB coach on the DC side of the Mississippi. Hope he hires an offensive/quality control assistant of help on that side of the ball.
