Group fears appointment of white or Republican mayor if Dixon is convicted

Leaders of the Maryland NAACP (http://www.baltimoresun.com/topic/social-issues/racism/naacp-ORNPR000027.topic), worried that a Baltimore mayor's criminal conviction could result in the appointment of a white or Republican leader who may not fully represent the majority black and Democratic city, are asking state lawmakers to strip the governor of authority to permanently fill the office.

Well based on this logic we shouldn't have a Black President because Blacks only make up a small minority, just over 10% of the population IIRC. Does anyone here support the NAACP's stance here?

I think its crazy. I'm hoping Dixon does get removed from office because what she is doing isn't working. We need a no nonsense Mayor in Baltimore. White, Black, Democrat, Republican, I don't care as long as you get the job done.

No, I do not.

"Our concern is who would the governor appoint?" Cheatham said. "Here you have a predominantly African-American city. What if the governor appointed somebody white? ... Would he appoint someone Irish to be the mayor?"

As a second generation Irish American this statement just blows me away.

And the GOP playbook in Louisiana.

And, sadly, the playbook of pretty much every political group in history.

I wasn't speaking of changing the law, per se. I was speaking of politicial expediency based on who will name the replacement for someone who has bee disgraced.

Conservative Republican Senator David Vitter, of Louisiana, was identified in the Washington madam's black book as a customer of her prostitutes. He quickly apologized, and the GOP and religious right did not pursue the matter any further, even though 1) they have made a huge fuss about other elected officials who have done such things, and 2) even though the issue of frequenting prostitutes had arisen in Vitter's campaign in 2004 and Vitter had blatantly lied and denied everything at that time, and 3) Vitter got his own start in politics by being appointed to REPLACE someone who quit the House due to an adultery scandal, and 4) Vitter called on President Clinton to resign because of his adultery with Monica Lewinsky.

Why did they let him off scot free? Because Democrat Kathaleen Blanco was the governor of Louisiana at the time, and would have appointed a Democrat to serve out the rest of his term. No other reason.

So, even though it is not the same thing, it is sort of the same thing, at least to me. Power politics at its grubbiest.

Well demanding that people have a certain skin color to perform a job will certain help us move toward a color-blind society.
