Sharpton now threatens to sue Limbaugh

It all started with a football fan who has a lot of money wanting to buy a piece of a football team.

It has now melted into an array of accusations and retractions and posturing and, most recently, a threat of litigation from Al Sharpton.

Sharpton waded into the movement to block Rush Limbaugh from buying a piece of the Rams by penning a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell. Limbaugh spent much of the week on his radio show lashing out against the likes of Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, pointing out things that, in Limbaugh's mind, make them inappropriate adjudicators of character.

Limbaugh capped the week with an op-ed item (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704322004574477021697942920.html) in the Wall Street Journal regarding the events culminating in Dave Checketts dropping Limbaugh from the group trying to purchase a franchise that could lose its 16th straight game later today.

In the column, Limbaugh claims that Sharpton "played a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot . . . and 1995 Freddie's Fashion Mart riot."

Sharpton disagrees -- and he now says he'll sue Limbaugh for defamation (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/10/17/2009-10-17_rev_al_sharpton_threatens_to_sue_rush_limbaugh_ over_wall_street_journal_oped.html) absent an apology.

"I am definitely going to prove he makes reckless, unaccountable statements," Sharpton said, according to the New York Daily News. "Which is why he was forced out of buying an NFL team in the first place."

Added Sharpton, "He doesn't have the right to lie and accuse people of crimes. He wants to criminalize me. . . . That's what got him in trouble. He tried to criminalize the NFL players, calling them Crips and Bloods."

So while Limbaugh's bid to become a minority owner of the Rams has now ended, the fallout from his short-lived effort to do so could be around for while.

Maybe by the time the dust has fully settled the Rams will have won a football game.

Of course it makes sense. The NFL owners aren't likely to allow a guy into their exclusive club who they think would hurt their bottom line, no matter if his name is Rush Limbaugh or Michael Vick.

That's their right as owners, and as another poster here pointed out, it's the way capitalism works.

Sharpton's a dope, but he may have a case this time. It'll be fun to see how this plays out.

So the guy may or may not be a racist, but I do know he's a blowhard. I can't stare into the hearts of men to determine whether he honestly dislikes anything other than what he is. Sharpton is a professional street hustler who has directly hurt the lives of individuals' livelihood with his lies and makes a living off it. Suing someone for defamation is a direct pot/kettle analogy and only proves how off in space that loon is.

I don't think Limbaugh ever completely fabricated a story about someone getting raped, by cops, and then was exposed for making the whole episode up. I'm no defender of Rush, in fact I've never listened to him, but Sharpton is a completely false and empty "leader."

Also ironic, since Sharpton's activities have actually led to the murder of an Australian Jew visiting New York. I don't believe that to be the case with Limbaugh. What has Limbaugh done that has directly contributed to murder? Nothing that I know of. Sharpton has, but I guess "kill the Jew" isn't as bad in this country as other things.

Sharpton's words & actions have directly led to murder.

Limbaugh's haven't, even though you claim he's more dangerous because his audience is mostly white, of which there are more people.

I used hyperbole before, but that's not hyperbole. That's fact. His intentions aren't noble. They guy makes a living of race-baiting and the least-common-denominator lining his pockets. The more he stirs the pot, the longer he makes his career. The last think he wants is utopia because it puts him out of a job.
