Now that would be a million times better! If Johnny was still the same **** guy and was still hanging on to his glory days and had taken over the dojo. Damn, why don't they ever just go the easy route!

But, why Will smith's son?! The least they can do is give it another name title. This one will be called back.

Bad, bad, bad idea. And I don't care if it has Will Smith it's a horrible idea to even touch a classic like Karate Kid.
The original was one of the best movies of the 80's. From a shower Halloween costume to classic lines ingrained in movie history, The Karate Kid I had it all. "Sweep the leg"

It wasn't all that bad, but the original still blows it away. Jaden Smith flat out cannot act. Chan did good, but he was no Pat Morita. The fight between the two sensei in the next one (I'm betting there will be a next one) should be pretty good.

Please, don't even go there with the prequels vs original Star Wars. i might have been a kid, but anyone with half a brain can tell you the original trilogy was way better than the prequels.
Back to The Karate Kid. I don't know if you saw the new one, I have, and like I said, it was good. But what made the original better was the chemistry between Morita and Macchio.

Well, I've heard it was good but not as good as the original (surprise). The thing about the original is, Pat Morita's mentor character of Mr. Miyagi is just so untouchable. His relationship to Daniel cannot be matched.
Yeah the acting is only decent, and it's so cheesy, but it has that "it" factor that makes it a classic.
It's got a 67% of Rotten Tomatoes. The original has a 90%.
That said, they better not f-ing touch Ferris Bueller's Day Off because that is a legitimate outstanding classic.
And the original Star Wars trilogy is far superior except in CGI which it cannot help being thirty years older.

Seriously though I was 100% against this remake, but have to say I am quite curious, so I will most likely see it.
The lasting appeal the original had on me is still felt today. Just love the underdog story, and I wish Mr. Miyagi was my Sensai, and taught me the ways of the Force, and how to be a Jedi Knight...like my father before me.

I saw it yesterday with my kids. It was pretty good. Better than I expected.
The acting wasn't as good (surprise surprise) but the martial arts was better. Also the bad guys were even more Evil so the payoff was quite satisfying.
Overall I'd give it a 6 out of ten compared to a 9 for the original. But my kids LOVED it so that's cool. And yes, they've seen the original (we own it)

Well, the bad guys weren't really evil in the Karate Kid. Frankly, I think Johnny Lawrence was right more often than not in that film.
I mean, let's look at this objectively. He's a young, blond California guy, king of the school with a pretty smoking girlfriend...and they've just broken up. Rather than leave a wake of devastated poon behind him to make himself feel better, he gallantly attempts to show her the error of her ways, even going so far as to ride his expensive bike to the beach, risking sand in the engine, just to speak with her.
And what does he get for his trouble? A transplanted wispy-thin Jersey kid telling him to go away, even being slightly physical with him. So Johnny defends himself, gets sand thrown in his face, and defends himself further. And he's the bad guy in all of this?
Let's not forget how he was later antagonized. Again, attempting to win back his girlfriend, almost having a tender moment at the country club dance, and yet this Jersey kid ruins the romance by barging in, then tripping and selfishly spilling food all over himself.
Later still, Mr. Lawrence is keeping to himself, not bothering anyone while he does drugs in the bathroom, and again, this Jersey kid sabotages him by spraying him with a hose. Understandbly upset, he and his friends give chase, only to be jumped by the Jersey kid's mentor, a high level black belt. I mean seriously, this Jersey kid is an *******.
After all that, Jersey boy still steals his girlfriend, so Mr. Lawrence retreats to the one thing that can make him feel better, give him solace and peace, his karate. But no, that's not enough for Jersey. Now he has to enter the karate tournament too. It wasn't enough to steal Johhny's girlfriend, to rip out his heart, now he wants to take the one thing he holds dear.
Johnny Lawrence is castigated for going after Jersey Kid's weak leg, but who among us has ever competed and not tried to take advantage of an opponent's weaknesses? To further stack the deck against Johnny, he is constantly warned about illegal shots and not awarded his deserved trophy. The trophy is awarded to Jersey, won by an ILLEGAL KICK TO THE FACE. For God's sake, tournament karate is won with strikes to the torso region. Why was Jersey kid not penalized for this?
*************
So am I surprised that the bad guys are more evil in this movie? No, I'm not, because the bad guy in Karate Kid was painted as the hero, and it was wrong. I mean hell, look at the sequels. Is it any coincidence that wherever Daniel LaRusso went, people wanted to beat the crap out of him. Eventually, you have to wonder why that is. It's because he's an *******.

I'm sure the movie might be fine. The point is, The Karate Kid didn't need to be remade and that will be proven when this version is not as popular as the original version.
I don't doubt that in 2009-2010 studios can make a decent movie with an old idea...I just don't think they should. It's lazy. The 2000s are going to be remembered as the decade of remakes in Hollywood. Think of all the movies (some very good, mind you) that were remakes, prequels, or sequels to older movies.
Batman Series
Halloween
Friday the 13th
Nightmare on Elm Street
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Superman
I'm sure there are more, but that's just what I came up with off the top of my head and I'm not even counting re-visiting the Star Wars movies since that technically started in the previous decade.

Yep, and even the "original" movies that did pretty well were just adaptations of comic books (Spiderman, Iron Man, etc.) or books (Lord of the Rings, Twilight, etc.).
From what I can recall, there were very few original ideas that were turned into good movies. It was a decade of remakes and book adaptations. Period.

I think that's a horrible precedent!! If effects are valued over writing, the film industry is going in the wrong direction. You can do all the cool stuff you want with CGI, but in order to have a powerful movie, you need character development and storylines. Otherwise, you are making a video game.

I saw it over the weekend with my daughter... 7 year old. She loved it.
I liked it too.... It was a pretty good move. I would say it's as good as the original. Pat Morita made the first movie in what was a signature role of his career.. Jackie Chan more than holds his own. Sorry Pat.
I liked the kid in this movie better too. Ralph was what 30 in the last movies of the Karatee Kid.
I give this movie a thumb up on the JMS scale.... Enough new things to make it interesting.
One issue I have with it... my only issue. In the original kids got the message that hard work, attention to detail, and respect for things made you aware and made you a better karatee fighter...
In this movie that wasn't nearly as clear. My daughter came away thinking it was the majic water from the dragon well which did the trick. Which was a little disappointing. They made a cool movie, but sacrificed on the great message to kids in the original.

Do you really think anybody could do a better Marty, Doc, or McFly?
It's nostalgic, but the BTTF movies were not GREAT. None of those 3 are phenomenal actors. I think all could be replaced.

Who said that was a good thing? I'm just saying it'll be remembered, not forgettable.
Oh OK...well, the movies that were made will be mostly forgotten.

The one with Hillary Swank as the Karate Kid might be the worst movie ever made.
I loved that one!!

I think BTTF is great. It wasn't the individual actors as much as the chemistry they created. It's like Lloyd, Fox, Wilson (Biff) and even Crispen Glover were made to play those roles. All the exchanges between Fox and Lloyd make it seem like they're best friends outside of the movie.
It's not the fact that they weren't elite actors, it's that they fit in to those roles so well. It's like they act like that in real life. You put John Wayne and a young Marlon Brando in those roles and I'd bet against it being better.
Besides, who do you think they'd cast if they made it in a few years? Bieber and Keanu Reeves?

If it wasn't for the fact that the run time (from what I heard) is over 2 hours I might have considered taking my son to see it.
With all of the talk if remakes I came across this article depicting how "Jaws" would be made today if it was a new movie. Sadly I think it's pretty accurate.

Pocahontas ;)
Lol, that's awesome!
Well, the bad guys weren't really evil in the Karate Kid. Frankly, I think Johnny Lawrence was right more often than not in that film.
Exactly! If you find yourself in a fair fight, you're not trying hard enough.
When I saw that movie, I wanted Johnny to win. He's cooler and better looking, and your right - he was justified.
I am surprised that the baddies are badder in this one though. Aren't they little kids like Jaden Smith? Shouldn't they hug it out in the end or something like that?

Spot on. All the stuff about character reminds me of a line from Blood Diamond "You Americans... you love to talk about your feelings."
Of course there's a CGI shark, but this CGI shark will be doing things no other CGI shark has ever done, including insane acrobatics. But more importantly this is a character story, so Andy Serkis will be hired to do the mocap for the CGI shark.

Just got back from watching this. It certainly doesn't eclipse the original, but it is a worthy remake. It's nowhere near as bad as I expected it to be.

The next great remake... The Jetsons... afterall, live action Scooby Doo and the Flintstones were epic... disasters. Just imagine the scene where Astro gets space rabies and eats Elroy. George will have his revenge!

You're out of your mind. MJF and CL both turned in iconic performances. Those movies didn't need "phenomenal" acting, they just needed charm and wit, which was delivered in spades. You'd be in the tiny minority if you took a poll and asked if BTTF should be remade.

haha. I knew that would stir a rise.
But yes, it can be remade.
Will Smith plays Doc Brown and it's a blockbuster.
