View Full Version : A survey about extremeskins.com. Alright which MOD done it???

I was reading this (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2009/11/skins_open_themselves_up_for_f.html) blog on WP and started reading some of the comments (which I hardly do but had some time to kill) but anyway this had me scratching my head:
"I wish there was a survey about extremeskins.com. I have never come across a bigger bunch of girls fighting each other about how bad the qb is. The moderators are terrible and nothing more than a bunch of hypocrites. They will ban users for so called personal attacks, yet strangely only if you personally attack certain members.
One member in particular Bubba the so called king of all media (funny that media consists of more than just football) seems to have free reign on the site where he can call people unintelligent, and tell other members they have thier panties in a know...which is a clear violation of rule number 5...yet nothing has or will ever be done...but the second you say anything back to him...your finished on that site.
I am a season ticket holder...well sorta my parents are but never go to the games, and I cannot wait to confront Mark the homer (an es mod) at the next home game about this issue....Im sure hes going to walk away like the pansy he is in front of his extremeskins tailgate and family.
im sick of this team losing...and how its run...even the garbage they call a message board.

If I were to .. theoretically .. call half of the members here, especially Bubba, "jackasses" (and remember .. this is just a theoretical question) would I "theoretically" be banned? And would I get the courtesy of a "Hi there" beforehand?

"Eagle Eye" (but I saw it in the theatre; the others here haven't)
And yes, I have been opening up a few seats courtesy of those who apply for membership in the "too stupid to post here" group (qualifications for which have nothing to do with any particular opinions on football or any aspect of the team). :)

Well...
This thread relates back to the thread regarding the thread that I made about the whole "Team relating to the media" thing. This gets a little bit closer though. It's more like blogs vs. ES.
There is so much that can be created both here and on the blogosphere as "fact" that can be construed between the two. We are both the same and they can take pot shots at us just as we can take pot shots at them.
Where does it really differ?

The question now is, did you call that number???? Well...... did you?
Jumbo, of all the mods I believe you are the one who can most spark this kind of reaction from an ex ESkin poster. While the work you do on here is great, I do think you come across as an extreme "internet toughguy". Its cool though man, Ive got nothing but love for you guys and the work you do to keep this site clean. We've only had one little spat, which admittedly I was wrong, but you wouldnt answer me in a PM. Instead you seemed to prefer to keep it in the open forums but thats cool, I dont intend on giving you a reason to be like that again. Its funner to play by the rules anyways. Kiss kiss Jumbo.
I know MTH has gotta be shaking in his boots on this one. If this guy were to show up at the ESKINS tailgate and pick a fight, I'd hate to see what he looks like after the beatdown. Ive never gone to the ESkins tailgate, regretably, but I think the tailgate rules state acts of violence will not be tolerated. Im sure there are exceptions to the rules though. Make sure he knows that pimp hand is strong Mark if he does show up. And treat him like the ***** that he is, though its probably safe to say he wont show up.

I'm not all too familiar with Bubba, as I don't post all that often in the Stadium. But why would anyone have that much of a problem with MTH, of all people?
And yeah, pretty ridiculous of anyone to actually want to confront the guy at the game, in front of his family. Pretty low.

Seems like we have one of these threads about every two weeks or so. Someone gets their bahookie in a twist and goes ape-snot crazy on some member(s) or mod(s). Most of the time, it is a harmless rant. This one is a bit different though.
I would recommend that this person be monitored - if at all possible.

For the life of me I simply do not understand how pathetic someone's life must be to COMPLAIN ABOUT A MESSAGE BOARD and how its run
Honestly, if you don't like it, go somewhere else. There are many other very good message boards dedicated to the Washington Redskins
And yes, this post is directed at YOU Robbyrock and any other internet drama queens who actually worry about how/what/who/whatever way a message board is run.

While the work you do on here is great, I do think you come across as an extreme "internet toughguy".
All the people who matter agree I do great work. :silly: I think the whole staff does great work. :)
Extreme "internet toughguy", eh? :hysterical: Ok. :)
It's a pretty nonsensical term, IMO, when applied loosely. But I'll chat about it a bit. My posting manner doesn't take a rocket surgeon to get, but it may take some observational skill and analytical acuity. I hardly post in any single one-dimensional manner. I cover a lot of turf. :)
But I know psychology well, and I can figure how certain people may project that label onto me. The truth is I simply reserve the right to bring the same attitude to people as I see them bring to other members, or to me. I don't do that nearly as often as I could, but I do make that choice at times when I feel there's a good reason. And I don't always suffer fools gladly.
In the moderator role, I also no longer take much crap from the average argumentative/opinionated message board idjit who's casting about in the clueless mode. I did early on as a mod thinking that was taking a "higher road", but I realized the wisest and most productive thing to do is treat these interactions the same way I would tream them anywhere else. So I will often call an ******* out on being ******* if merited and needed, or bluntly hold someone accountable for what they've written if appropriate. Some folks may recognize it as one form of mirroring, done in specific manner and context, and is proven to be effective. :)
If that's how you define an internet toughguy, good enough. I can tell you I am exactly the same way outside of ES, as a couple people here know.
At the same time, anyone who shows any kind of reasonable behavior in their own interaction with me or their fellow members will only be met with equivalent kindness, humor, and good conversation if at all.:D
My favorite thing, as observant members here know, is humor. :D
Speaking of projection, you notice the blogger mentions MTH and bubba, and there was another mod I believe in the exchange, but I wasn't mentioned at all yet you credit me as the one who will "spark this kind of reaction." ;)
When it comes to pissing people off, I'm still a novice compared to Art & "Old" (sometimes "Still") TK :silly:

I agree about the statement on Bubba. He really does get to do whatever he wants without punishment...i hate to say it, but its true. Not to mention the fact that he always thinks he's right which isn't a violation, but just annoying.
Does what he wants? Punishment? If one of you guys making this claim want to point me to where bubba has broken a rule that merits some action, i'd sure like to see it. But then comments like yours have always turned out to be just flatulence to date.
You won't find an example other than the very rare new thread he's posted that's a duplicate (since posting every Redskins-related news item he can find is one of his staff duties).
We cut even the "average member" some slack on a very regular basis, but I can't even think of a single time where bubba broke a rule other than what I just stated, and I read the board thoroughly way more than you do.
So what will it be? A retraction or provide some examples (and if you do, make sure you're correct). :)
There's a big difference between someone whose style and stances annoy some people and breaking the rules. The claim that bubba "gets way with breaking rules" is simply wrong and stupid. No better way to put it. Now your judgment as to the merit of his football opinions is your business, just as with any other member.
BTW, I disagree with bubba lots, as he knows, so his views having nothing to do with anything.
Also, amigo, you have 7 mod actions from four different mods in your user notes, so maybe your focus and judgment on matters of rules is a little askew from the get-go. :silly:

I think many of us feel that way about various message boards we may visit but ultimately how one reacts is the key. I can see where some posters feel that there are clicks here. It's a natural feeling one has when you first join and participate in a message board community. Back in my early posting days (I was a lurker for a few years before joining) I sometimes felt that too. But ultimately there are two things that people need to remember. First, you get what you give and second, as others have said, this is just a message board. It's a place where you come to voice your opinion on the Redskins and read other peoples opinion. If you don't like it here, there are plenty of other places where you can go to do the very same thing. No need to get all worked up about it.

Not to mention the fact that he always thinks he's right which isn't a violation, but just annoying.
:wtf: Why would anyone jump into a debate thinking they were wrong? :insane:
Am I always right? nope
Do I admit when I am wrong? rare, but if I am proven wrong I will be the first to say so. But just because you "think" I'm wrong is not the same as actually proving I am
When I take a position I do so with vigor. I also back it up with facts, stats, logic and common sense. I try to give detailed reasons why I believe "I am right".
Tell you what instead of whining about me "thinking" I am right.... the next time you disagree, post why... and you better have something tangible to back it up, not just "your opinion"
if you prove me wrong I will admit it... will you do the same?

I agree that there is a ton of unintelligent discussion in regards to our QB position but whatever.. In regards to the MODS, bottom line is, if you follow the rules you'd never hear from the Mods. This is me personally, but I don't pay much attention to the Mods. If you come on to this board with the mindset of "what are the Mods up to now". Well then you're someone with an axe to grind and are missing the point of this board.
I haven't been posting long but I've read them for years, long enough to know that Bubba has brought so much to this community that if you have a problem with Bubba, than there's something wrong with you, not him.
The only time I've ever seen a Mod get into with someone to the point of personal attack is when it's a user who on a daily basis causes trouble and needs to have his pants pulled down and spanked in public.

Having grown up in Washington myself, I learned early on that the passion of the fanbase in Washington was not only rabid, but political as well.
With that as a point of reference, I suppose that Extremeskins in it's enforcement of the rules only pertain to others not themselves, much like how our National leaders enforce our Constitution et al Bush administration and now sadly Obamas.
So, I guess you could say that Extremeskins and it's moderates are a direct reflection of the hypocritical behavior of our egomaniamaniacal leaders that have put our country in the same shape this franchise is, down the toilet.

coming into a thread and agreeing with something who's provided no facts and is clearly someone with a vendetta well it makes you just as unintelligent looking as them. If this is a true problem in the community get it out there, get some opinions and lets discuss it.

11. Please do not use the “Quote” feature to quote huge blocks of text or pictures.
If you would like to respond to the contents of a particular post, simply quote the sentence or idea that you're commenting upon, not necessarily the entire post. It wastes space on the database and unnecessarily extends and clutters threads.
Between Jumbo and Bubba trying to create this idea that for making this observation of the hypocritical ways a handful of mod's engage the membership here, the OP is a moron or looking for attention I would say they have in doing so made his point for him.
And he is "11" acting may I say with a good measure of maturity as opposed to yours.
A friend of mine told me when I became a member of the message board that he was banned for life after making a Post that criticized Gibbs play calling and the lack of talent that was apparent in Campbell. This happened 2 years ago and the same group that has been involved in this OP's observations attacked this friend so relentlessly that when he snapped under their personal attacks and returned one such remark in kind, he was banned for life.
Guess what that same group included TR1, Jumbo and Bubba.
The members user name was CosmicBuffalo.
He got very upset when he related his experience to me now, 2 years later. Then he broke out laughing. When I asked why he said," Those mental midgets banned me by goading me into the same behavior they were attacking me with." "Here's the funny part...... I was right on about everything I was saying at the time." "In fact I was one of the first people to make a post about the Redskins offseason move to get CFL defensive end Chris Wilson." "In it I wrote that I believed he would become a great asset to the team, and I was right about that too."
That's when he said,"The shame of it is that it's a great message board for Redskins fans like us that are almost 3,000 miles from D.C. and it was great for me since I became disabled, gave me something else to occupy my time."
He wished me luck, but warned me about this very thing and this very group of individuals.
I guess I am going to get banned now for sticking up for him and this OP, well if that happens so be it. The only thing these self appointed Tin Gods are doing is driving away knowledgeable fans that are loyal to the team and the players, not the ownership.
My friend that was banned is not only a great fan of over 36 years or so, he is a really smart football guy. Watching the games with him is an amazing experience for me and my family. In fact my boys have become Redskin fans over the last 4 years after being rabid niner fans because of him.

BTW, I disagree with bubba lots, as he knows, so his views having nothing to do with anything.
Also, amigo, you have 7 mod actions from four different mods in your user notes, so maybe your focus and judgment on matters of rules is a little askew from the get-go. :silly:
Did you refer to someones opinion as flatulence? And imply that he couldn't be right because you,"Read these boards more than you do?"
Claiming that someone with over 50,000 posts has never done anything wrong is ridiculous isn't it? I'm asking here.
There's a big difference between someone whose style and stances annoy some people and breaking the rules. The claim that bubba "gets way with breaking rules" is simply wrong and stupid. No better way to put it. Now your judgment as to the merit of his football opinions is your business, just as with any other member.

I exaggerated. ;)
Dude, why come to a message board if you only want to hear what you like? ES is about having different points of view. Sure, it's frustrating when your take on things is different than most, and when you come to a place where you think you'll find sympathetic viewpoints, but it doesn't always turn out that way.
I think it's pretty funny that anyone would chance getting banned because of anything I post. It's a friggin' message board. I hate the mods getting involved in any thread I'm in. It's usually because there's a fella who is ABSOLUTELY **** SURE that he's RIGHT, and everyone else be damned...to the point of calling names or some other bad behavior.
ES is the most tolerant message board I've ever seen. Try to post some stuff against an owner on another team message board and see how far that gets. Hell, try to lead a fan revolt ON A TEAM'S OFFICIAL MESSAGE BOARD, and see how well that goes over in other NFL cities.
Stop your whining about this board.
You have no idea how silly you look.

The irony is, you don't win. You lose. Again.

I'd like to thank Bubba for the following...
He was there to help with my first fight as a kid. She was tough, but I survived.
Bubba was there when we were in a foxhole and under heavy enemy fire during the big war. His superior leadership saved my life.
Bubba was there to help with the delivery of my only child.
Bubba helped me with numerous challenges in college - his intelligent guidance helped me to graduate in less than ten years.
Bubba got me that first job - I was nervous, but taking orders through a window was much less of challenge due to his incredible suggestions.
Bubba helped me when purchasing my first home. The outdoor plumbing was a problem at first, but his plumbing skills saved the day.
Bubba introduced me to the Redskins and these last sixteen years have been a blast!
Finally, Bubba got me a neat deal with membership at ES. I pay only $49.95 a month for the privilege of being here.
Bubba is amazing.
Hail Bubba!

The fact is I am not CosmicBuffalo the banned member, but he lives only about 30 minutes away in San Jose. I live in Fremont and met Paul jamming at an open mic night in Berkeley about 4 years ago. After we realized that both of us started out in DC and were Skins fans we became better friends.
It's true that I took part of his user name to represent him here. The way he explained it to me he actually realizes that he did go postal at the end, and probably deserved to get banned. He's too embarrassed to come back on here anyway. It's true though that when I discovered this message board I invited him to join with me. That's when I got the story, and I guess because he is my friend and a good one I wanted to bring something of his back to the forum with me so I could represent him.
As a singer he goes by Cosmic Buffalo too, very into Native American and very into the Skins as well. Like so many of us that have been relatively patient for the last 17 years to return to something better than what we have seen lately.

hmmm and i was always under the impression that meant laughing something else off but i guess butt fits as well.....Really? You might be right.
...I believe (mods can help me here) you are not allowed directly attack the poster with name(s). You are allowed to on the hand attack the post as being retarded instead if you only know what the hell the post is about in the first place....Not quite true. It's all about context. Example: If you're engaged with a member, and the member says something you deem idiotic, you may point his statement out and call him an idiot. This is within the allowed guidelines, and has been since before I joined the site. When the name-calling becomes personal or is unprovoked, then it's a violation.
OTOH, the word "retard" is not really PC and some of us don't particularly like it, so that one may very well get you in trouble (even used off-handedly), especially if a fellow member takes offense to it. ;)

That's why the context is important. Attacking somebody's idiotic statement and at the same time calling them an idiot is not attacking them personally, it's attacking their statement.
If the member started a thread in the Tailgate about how he's just been released after two years at St. Elizabeth's, and somebody said "You're an idiot," that could be considered personal. :)

Exposing ignorance vs declaring idiocy and/or stupidity are quite different.
Unfortunately, many are ignorant of this fact and those idiots are too stupid to realize it.

Thank you for the link and I see how the rule is being applied and as I said, it is your pool. ;) however ... in reference to a line in the above link's post
this always been the rule of thumb on ES. It's allowed. What it is not, is a personal attack.
you see, when you say a "rule of thumb" that is the little crack between the rules that those in power can allow to be used.
when those not in the know about some old post read the following ..
5. Please be respectful of your fellow members.
Every registered member agrees, upon registration, not use these forums to post material or topics which are knowingly false, defamatory, deceptive, inaccurate, racist, insulting, abusive, inflammatory, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually graphic, physically threatening, invasive of another's privacy or otherwise in violation of any law, including stalking or otherwise harassing individual members.
Personal attacks or threats will not be tolerated. Go after the idea, not the poster. Free debate within the parameters outlined herein is welcome on these forums, and diversity of opinion lies at the heart of a good debate. Toward that end, every member is free to have their own opinion so long as it is expressed in a civil manner, is within the subject matter topic of the forum and does not otherwise violate forum rules.
For the benefit of a very few individuals who believe the second paragraph of this rule is not at all connected with the first, we have deemed it necessary to provide direction. The specifics of this rule require you do not violate any of the parameters clearly laid out in paragraph 1 of this rule, which govern the application of enforcement for the entire rule. And as you debate your fellow members, we request you maintain contact with the content of the discussion within each reply, regardless of how heated it may become. We, again, point to Rule 18 we have not enforced here in some time. Please follow the rules. And please appreciate the people who wrote them know them.
(yes i know you know the rules, however to make it easy for anyone to follow me i posted it. i added the bold part to where i believe there is a conflict)
by reading the Listed rules and looking at the part that i put in bold, seems to be that calling someone an idiot would be against the rules because calling someone an idiot IS attacking them and not their idea.
now maybe they are an idiot, however there are also other things people are that would likely get me a vacation, one you mentioned was not PC and we can all think of others.
Like I said, it is your pool i can go with the flow or stop visiting. I dont tend to call others names and dont usually post enough to get called a name. I can see why some might think something is a personal attack when it isn't according to current thinking.
Maybe alter the rule that everyone can easily locate ?
Anyway, I just hope we win today.

These threads always go a certain way (a dynamic which offers lessons in itself) and I usually find that until they have run their course they're both entertaining and educational for many members. :saber:
This following isn't "official" I just made it up for a post to summarize. :D
Job description of moderating staff: design and implement rules and guidelines in flexible enough fashion to allow a great deal of freedom and accomodate all sorts of styles, types, passions, and levels of discourse. This should be done as inclusive as possible for every type of member from the more genteel to the more spirited and rough-n-tumble among us, with a fair degree of freedom to express themselves intellectually and emotionally, while still having boundaries and structures that discourage true excess, total chaos, and generally unacceptable levels or types of interaction. Such values in discussion should be generally common to any good quality broad-based internet community message board focused on the sport of pro football. Post the rules for everyone to read, have them electronically note their agreement that they will learn and follow those rules when they register for an account. Include a rule to address all the well-meant criticism, inevitable confusion, outright opposition, and ocassional anger that will occur in reaction to these rules and their application no matter how the rules are written and applied. Have that rule (#18 in our case) state that when in doubt about what a rule means, ask staff, and simply follow it the best you can, always adhering to moderators instructions. Then, once formulated and as evolving, continue to administer the rules and guidelines with the preceding in mind for a very large group of often highly opinionated members, continuously, for free. :D
Member description: post on football and other topics in appropriate forums, learn and follow the rules best you can, try to behave in a way to best stay out of trouble and still really express yourself, and follow staff instructions. :)
Gee, I know how challenging job 1 can be, how hard is job 2? :silly:
Now, for those of you who believe that being a moderator means by job description that you are expected to be some version of Mr. Rogers or a doormat or a saint or a waitperson or take crap from somebody without similar retort if desired or simply be more restricted in expressing yourself than a regular member, you'd be incorrect. ;)

I don't know, this guy sounds like a spoiled, stupid 15 year old. I wouldn't be too worried about an idiot like this.
But that's ridiculous and incredibly childish that he'd threaten Mark the Homer like that. Mark, it's nice that you had your family and picture in your signature but I'd consider keeping something more anonymous. You don't want to make yourself a target. It's a shame that people can't just be decent but there are a lot of weirdos and morons around that will cross the line.

You don't like it, stay the **** out of the thread.
How is this "doing exactly what you said at the top of your post...."???
We're discussing name-calling. There is no name calling in STB's post. Do I really have to point this out???
Your post, which STB responded to, was basically a thread hijack. STB voiced his opinion of your hijack, interjecting a little color in the process.
It's amazing how much time is spent by moderators repeatedly having to explain simple elementary concepts to the nth degree to so few who remain clueless.

I want to pick a fight with Mark the Homer all the time at Redskins games, because what better time to do it than when he is in front of his family! How dare he ban someone for being so moronic it makes you scratch your head wondering how that gene pool has survived. How dare he moderate a message board that is free to any punk with a computer can try to express their frustrations by bullying other folks, because mommy and daddy don't care. After-all negative attention is better than no attention....right? I should be able to say on any message board that I will kick other people's butts, regardless of the fact that I weigh only 120 pounds and flunked out of karate classes.

Yes, and your post in there was clueless. And the guy you were "teaming up" with (who just got perma-banned) had copious user notes from a number of mods and previous bans. Same ole same ole.
So here ya go, Da G:
Sometimes we just get tired of people not listening or continuing arguing about **** they either know little about and refuse to learn, or in the end, is just not really their concern nor involves them in any way. When some one has a legit critique and is decent about it, no problem. Though most "critics", especially the oppositional "bias-whiner" type, never seem to be aware enough to use the feedback forum or PM their "input." That type often seems to desire the extra attention from kibitizing in threads even when moderating isn't the topic (like you in the bronco thread).
Unfounded or fallacious accusations are not ok, and never have been, and such is even mentioned (guess where?--in the rules). Those are the same rules that have always been here and helped make the forum the major success it's long been. Since you want to keep bitching about how the board is managed, yet continue to hold yourself hostage here, I am taking upon myself to alleviate you of your struggles.
If you're too damn dense to understand that just as in any similar situation, management staff have to make judgment calls and that there no is no way to please everyone all the time (we even get plenty of “you don‘t ban enough“ complaints), yet you still want to keep bitching about it in the specific fashion you choose, then you qualify for the "too stupid to post here" group.
Legitimate, informed criticism from considered thought delivered appropriately is great. Insistent and willfully ignorant or oppositional harping is not helpful, needed, or wanted. From you, it is done.
We have no issue with weeding out the extra-argumentative types when they go out of their way. The board is inundated with enough attitude that such departures are hardly a negative. And while any idjit can play the "oh, right, ban the people who are challenging why you ban people" card, it is just that--an "idgit" card.
The line of thought that stupidity or rule breaking of a specific type should be "safe" from consequences simply because it "calls out" the consequences as being abused, is foolish. Any idea that I as a mod will automatically avoid employing such consequences out of any trepidation for how it might "appear" to those who think in such fashion, is very mistaken.

sorry, if you say "you're an idiot" after someone makes an idiotic statement, that's a personal attack, especially considering that idiocy is often times subjective.
