"Leaders of one of the world's most effective jihadist organizations, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), have written a new "code" for jihad. The LIFG says it now views the armed struggle it waged against Col. Moammar Gadhafi's regime for two decades as illegal under Islamic law.
The new code, a 417-page religious document entitled "Corrective Studies" is the result of more than two years of intense and secret talks between the leaders of the LIFG and Libyan security officials.
The code's most direct challenge to al Qaeda is this: "Jihad has ethics and morals because it is for God. That means it is forbidden to kill women, children, elderly people, priests, messengers, traders and the like. Betrayal is prohibited and it is vital to keep promises and treat prisoners of war in a good way. Standing by those ethics is what distinguishes Muslims' jihad from the wars of other nations.""

I guess they are in a Libyal prision, which would seem to undermine their credibility, but at least can argue that they should have some credibility.
Anybody have any idea as to whether this can/will have a real effect?

Wait, so jihadists no longer want to be considered terrorists and will abide by the Geneva Convention?
Well it's a start! I say good for them.

Awesome, I hope this has a huge affect. I hope that the people over there fully recognize who it is that is bombing their market places, and killing innocent women and children. Whatever their beef may be with the US it can't blind them to the fact that it is Al Qaeda and other terrorists that are targeting the people.

If anyone thinks this will make a difference they are fooling themselves...

I'm not sure that it will, but the absoluteness of your post reminded me of something that Truman said:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_S._Truman
"He described the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selma_to_Montgomery_marches) as silly, stating that the marches would not "accomplish a darned thing"."
He being Truman. Sometimes, small things have a large and unexpected result.

I'm no expert on terrorist by any means, but common sense tells me, that when al aqueda goes beyond killing "westerners" and "non-muslims" to start killing other muslims, then there has gotta be a movement by the non-jihad people.

Nahh, isn't it just easier to keep on thinking that they are all a bunch of un-evolved animals who would rather eat their own young than stand against someone who threatens their families and their way of life?

LIFG hasn't exactly mattered in recent times. Perhaps this is a start, but we will see. The problem is that radical muslims shout down or kill moderates who stand up to them.

Sooner or later there will be a breaking point when the people will stand up to these guys, just the same as we would do here.

There are many that recognize them as frauds and apostates.
The real battle is gonna be won or lost by the religious leadership, this cancer is not simple to excise...nor are some willing to do so

Does anyone think Al Qaeda cares? They'll just respond by saying these people are weak and that time has robbed them of their dedication to the cause. It's the same with all violent movements, the most violent wins. Let's face it if terrorists valued human life, ethics, or any other concept related to basic decency they wouldn't be terrorists in the first place.

The most fervent members won't care. Many of them will do exactly what you predict.
But al Qaeda lives and dies by recruitment -- particularly due to the nature of the business they're in. Most potential recruits aren't yet the entrenched, fully indoctrinated versions of themselves they become after joining up. Show some public religious backbone against al Qaeda, and suddenly many skeptical would-be recruits decide not to be recruits in the first place. The long-term effect of interrupting the recruitment tap can be major.
Not to mention the financial aspect of it: monetary support will be harder to secure when there's an open movement against al Qaeda's disgusting methods and open pressure on some (not all) of their backers.

Or break a nearby damn, so it floods the place, and we can all take a ride on your new boat.
