Original story below.
Update. Jalopnik now has a video up of the actual crash. No pelican. Just one moron who dropped his phone. And the irony is he owns a company that repairs wrecked exotics. :hysterical:
AND... he owns the Enzo crashed by Eddie Griffin. You cant make this stuff up.

(with video of the car being pulled from the lake)
The two-seater, with 16 cylinders and four turbo chargers, can reach speeds of more than 250 mph. New models sell for about $2 million.
The man, who refused to give his name, was looking at real estate in Galveston.
About 3 p.m. a low-flying pelican distracted him as he traveled north on Interstate 45 just south of the hurricane levee near Omega Bay.
The man jerked the wheel, dropped his cell phone, and the car's front tire left the frontage road and entered a muddy patch, which foiled his attempt to maneuver away from the lagoon.
The Veyron's powerful engine gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died.

Standard mode - used for speeds up to 220 km/h, the rear spoiler system is completely retracted. In handling mode, used at higher velocities, the vehicles nose is pulled down and the monumental rear spoiler deployed.
That works out to a minimum 136 MPH before the wing deploys.

Isn't the "crashing into the lake" part of it, enough to be charged with reckless driving ?
I mean, it's not like he can say that the lake jumped up and crashed into him.

Yeah I think you're correct. I believe the drivers in single car accidents can be charged with reckless driving. Not sure if the fact that he was going 136mph+ could add anything to that or not.

He must have been hauling ass. The rear wing was deployed.
I don't doubt he was speeding. But the rear wing is usually up and it is also an automatic air brake. It flips up vertically under hard braking.
I would guess maybe 70-80 mph?.... Much more than that would probably flip a car with one wheel in the mud or at least put him in the middle of the lake.
You just know what happened. He was looking down at his phone when he saw the bird out of the corner of his eye and it startled him. What a moron. I keep thinking of Jeremy Clarkson talking about how you cant just put your foot down on it without careful thought and a mile of road in front of you. Who the **** thinks it's a good idea to play with your phone in a car like that?
Can't find the above episode, but I cant help but post one of my favorite videos of all time. Crank up the sound a little, put it on full screen and take a ride at 250mph...

If you read it, he could have been in "handling mode" which would deploy the wing at any speed. I'm guessing that's the case. Like I said, put one wheel in the mud at over 100mph and things can get much worse than driving into a lake.

Someone asked if it was salvageable...
I have a buddy who had a BMW M3. For those who don't know, the motor in that car is a 420 hp V8 masterpiece that revs to about 8,600 rpm. He drove it to work one day when the streets were flooded and a truck went by him sending a wall of water over his hood, down the hood scoop and into the motor. It was trashed. Replacement cost: $36,000 on a $70,000 car.
How much do you suppose it would cost for an ultra rare 1000hp V16 motor? And that's not including what other damage was done.
I'm sure it's salvageable so long as the body and frame is good. And I'm sure it will be repaired. But it may take a year or two and at least a million to do it.

That was my first thought as well. Even my POS has it.
I still wouldn't try to call someone except at very low speeds and a clear road. The buttons are on the steering wheel but the display is in on the radio so you still have to look away from the road.
But for 1.6 mil, I would expect the Veyron to have voice activation, a heads up display, and a star trek communicator.

But wouldn't it be the same proportions (ratio of car part price to the amount of the car cost), just on a higher scale than the average car ?
Like to replace each part on the car, the part would be proportionately higher, based on the value of the car.
In the case of a car, the sum is not greater than the parts. If you were to buy each part separately, wouldn't it cost more than the price of the car ?
And in this case, I'm sure a lot of parts need to be replaced to due water damage.

Wanna here something wild? How much do you think it costs to build one? Total cost including development. Remember that they have only built about 450 in various configurations. Top of the line sells for 2 mil.
1 million?
1.2?
Gotta make a profit right?
Wrong.
Each car costs Bugatti between 6 and 7 million to produce.
Volkswagen - who owns Bugatti, Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, and a few others you probably never heard of, says they do it to as a technological show piece to advance the state of the art.

Show me proof because that sounds like complete BS.
So, basically, you're saying that every time they sell that car, they're losing 5 million dollars. If they've made 450 of them that means they've lost 2.5 billion dollars. If I were a stockholder, I would be making a phone call every couple of hours
The catch is including development costs on a limited production vehicle, which is not the whole story:)
They use that in other applications as well as in hyping the car.:silly:

http://wikicars.org/en/Bugatti_Veyron
After the release of the car, it has been reported that while each Veyron is being sold for £840,000, the production costs of the car are approximately £5 million per vehicle. This is not the price to produce one vehicle, but rather the cost of the entire Veyron project divided by the number of vehicles produced at that time. As Bugatti, and therefore Volkswagen, are making such a loss, it has been likened by automotive journalist Jeremy Clarkson to Concorde; in that they are test-beds for advancements in technology and developed as exercises in engineering.
The development of a car like this really is almost on the scale of developing a fighter jet. Considering current economic conditions, it's very likely the fastest road legal car we will ever see in our lifetime.

If he trashed the motor he hydrolocked it. Water into the cylinders. Water does not compress like air/fuel mixture. Piston slams to a stop but crank wants to keep on cranking. Very bad things happen at this point. Rods through the side of the block or the top of the piston. Any manner of metal thrashing can occur.
I've seen many submerged motors where you pull the spark plugs, crank a few times by hand to expel most of the water. Blow out remainder with compressed air. Change fluids and they start right up. His problem will be with the electronics/wiring. Submersion in salt water means one thing. Long term corrosion on any wiring and terminials that were submerged and not replaced.
